Abstract

Kauman Settlement in Yogyakarta, Indonesia is an urban village settlement located inside the complex of Kraton Yogyakarta (Palace of Yogyakarta). At first, the settlement was a facility provided by Sultan Hamengku Buwono for the abdi dalem (employees) of Masjid Gedhe (Great Mosque of the Palace of Yogyakarta). Social, political and cultural changes have occurred for approximately three centuries, from the Dutch Colonialism era up to now. These changes have both physical and non-physical effects to lives of the people and the shape of the settlement. Physically, the building designs have become more heterogenous, albeit without neglecting the basic concept of Javanese traditional architecture. The process of building and developing the settlement is supported by Javanese cultural values devoutly practiced by the settlers. The Javanese tradition does not fade out even though other cultures have interfered and influenced the traditional culture. In order to understand how the people of Kauman Yogyakarta shape their settlement in relation to the traditional Javanese values they are practicing, observation of literature, collection of field data and interviews for the purposes of analysis are conducted. Kauman Yogyakarta today is a settlement with a distinctive feature, a place of traditional Javanese culture amidst the business center of modern Yogyakarta.

Indonesia has become integrated into the global economy. As a result, many expatriates are employed in Indonesia and married Indonesian women. This research aims to find out how is cross-cultural communication among members of PERCA (intermarriage community) toward society 5.0. The methodology of this research is descriptive qualitative based on interviews with primary sources, literature and observation and analysis based on the existing concept. This research was conducted by comparing it with previous studies conducted in other countries. The results of this research show there are diverse languages and cultures, including those of Java, Bali, and Padang used in intermarriage. This research concluded that families use both English and Indonesia language in daily activities, these women accept their fate to marry foreign men on condition that they follow their wives’ religion, although in practice the husbands are not supposed to run with obedience as her. Children are educated according to their mother's religion and study in an international school with the ultimate goal of studying and working abroad such as in the United States or their father’s country of origin.

This study is aimed to describe the lingual forms of Javanese speakers of the Semarang people, as one of the representatives of the Javanese community in the coastal areas. The form of lingual is in the form of lingual units of greetings as a means of unifiers in social life and part of the harmony of social life.The location of the research is in Semarang City. The selection of respondents and informants uses a purposive sampling system. The method of data collection is done through structured interviews, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The method of data analysis uses three basic components of meaning: word-concept-referent through the paradigm of linkages between lingual-cultural-behaviour relationships. The findings of the study are the wealth of lingual forms of the Javanese coastal community of Semarang City in the form of semantic relations and forms, which are framed by the culture of coastal communities. Bamboo, as a common plant in Asia, usually used in Asian daily life from household tools to construction. The use of bamboo in a traditional house, particularly in Javanese, occurs in many building elements such as wall and roof construction. Empyak raguman, part of empyak (traditional Javanese roof structure), used bamboo in a vertical arrangement to cover the inside part. The use of empyak raguman being a part of Javanese local wisdom in bamboo usage. Started with the bamboo calculating the inside roof coverage to measure bamboo needs, selecting bamboo, preserving bamboo in a natural way, assembling and finalized constructing bamboo in local tradition. The construction process did by gotong royong (work together in Javanese community) tradition. So, this paper explores how bamboo usage as empyak raguman in Javanese house considering the environment as a point of view. Used literature and in-depth interview with the traditional Javanese expert then compare with the usage of bamboo in a modern way. The initial finding shows that bamboo usage in the traditional way is environmentally friendly than in a modern way. So, this finding can be elaborated to develop bamboo usage in the traditional patterns for modern living.

The eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010 was one of the largest volcanic eruptions in Indonesian history. The catastrophic event resulted in fatalities, loss of homes and livelihoods, infrastructure damage, and trauma for residents. There also a shift in community dynamics. The purpose of this study is to analyse and understand the formation of resilient communities by examining the shift in the society dynamics, specifically socio-cultural changes in community-based interventions. The study is a case study of Pangukrejo Hamlet in Sleman, Indonesia. Study results showed that in the aftermath of the eruption, the community experienced changes in degree of harmony and mutual respect among members. The study identified community economy dynamics, which are attributable to three interventions. Study results formed the basis for drawing policy implications for public awareness of disaster risk and post-disaster recovery in general.

Traditional Javanese houses known for their rich traditions are symbolized by the use of ornaments, construction and building materials. Empty raguman is one of the architectural elements of a Javanese house, in the form of an inner roof coating that functions as a ceiling. The sweetness made of bamboo blades arranged in a certain pattern is a symbol of the level of socio-economic ability of the homeowner. Its existence functions aesthetically and describes a strong tradition. The tradition of making empyak began with processing bamboo, assembling and installing fish is a manifestation of the value of mutual cooperation in Javanese society in the past. At present, empyak raguman is rarely found in traditional Javanese houses built in the modern era. The loss of this element is due to changes in the lifestyle of traditional communities in urban and rural areas. This paper aims to review the beauty of tradition, tradition and aesthetics in Javanese homes. The method used is literature review and its comparison with the practice of implementing it in some cases of traditional houses. The tradition of putting up a lot of raguman has not been carried out anymore, but the existence of empiri raguman which is still preserved is a symbol of pride for traditional homeowners. Keberadaannya berfungsi secara estetika dan menggambarkan tradisi yang kuat. Tradisi pembuatan empyak dimulai dengan pengolahan bambu, merangkai dan memasang empyak merupakan perwujudan nilai gotong royong masyarakat Jawa di masa lalu. Saat ini, empyak raguman jarang ditemukan pada rumah tradisional Jawa yang dibangun pada era modern. Hilangnya elemen ini karena perubahan gaya hidup masyarakat tradisional di perkotaan dan di perdesaan. Tulisan ini bertujuan mengulas kembali empyak raguman, tradisi dan estetikanya dalam rumah Jawa. Metode yang digunakan adalah kajian literatur dan komparasinya dengan praktek pelaksanaannya pada beberapa kasus rumah tradisional. Tradisi memasang empyak raguman sudah tidak dijalankan lagi namun keberadaan empyak raguman yang masih terpelihara menjadi simbol kebanggaan bagi pemilik rumah tradisional. The heritage of Yogyakarta is always situated in a dynamic urban environment. Heritage conservation has been challenged by a lack of understanding on the ideological process in the creation of meanings. This paper investigates the creation process of urban space that is currently appreciated as heritage. The paper uses the city of Yogyakarta as the case study because its uniqueness as a mix of traditional and colonial cities. The study uses the concept of meaning production to understand the association between the construction of urban space and ideological meanings. This concept corresponds to the creation of urban objects and the recognition of meanings in the society. This study uses data sourced from a literature study. As the result, the process of meaning production has demonstrated social and political forces in the construction of traditional and colonial buildings. Situation in the past demonstrates urban space as a tool of political hegemony of traditional court and colonialist. A different social milieu in the present day changes the conflicting ideologies into history. Therefore, the urban structure expresses political strategies of relevant authorities in proclaiming hegemony and regulating society. This study provides a basis for investigating the influence of ideologies on the meaning of heritage that corresponds to cultural significant.
