Accrual Anomaly and Idiosyncratic Risk: International Evidence

In this study, we show that accrual abnormal returns are positively correlated to idiosyncratic risk in international equity markets. In addition, we find that idiosyncratic risk has less impact on accrual abnormal returns for developed countries than emerging countries. Our results are robust to different model selections, such as portfolio approach and regression analysis, across countries. Our ... This study estimates default probabilities of 124 emerging countries from 1981 to 2002 as a function of a set of macroeconomic and political variables. The estimated probabilities are then compared with the default rates implied by sovereign credit ratings of three major international credit rating agencies (CRAs) - Moody's Investor's Service, Standard & Poor's and Fitch Ratings. The study finds that CRAs usually underestimate the risk of sovereign debt as the sovereign credit ratings from rating agencies are usually too optimistic.

This study focuses on how government ties and financial ties as two important social ties in emerging countries differently moderate the relationships between two types of organisational learning (i.e., explorative learning and exploitative learning) and product quality. Furthermore, the moderating effects of government ties on the relationships between both two types of organisational learning and product quality are significantly positive. While financial ties positively moderate the relationship between exploitative learning and product quality, they negatively moderate the relationship between explorative learning and product quality.
