Size and age structure of the scaleworms Lepidonotus squamatus and Harmothoe imbricata (Polychaeta, Polynoidae) in the White Sea

Authors:

Abstract

Thi size and age structure of Lepidonotus squamatus and Harmothoe imbircata polulations were studied in mussel collectors established in the Kandalaksha Bay (the White Sea) in July of 1996 and 1997. Five age and size groups were distinguished in the L. squamatus population. The accordance between these groups by the "probability paper" method and counting of growth lines on labial plates of jaws is demonstrated. The formation of the first growth line takes place in the period between the first and second years of life. The maximum life span of this species is not more than five years. The number of growth lines on the jaws of H. imbricata varies from 0 to 3. The formation of the fats gorwth line occurs in the first year of life. The maximum life span is three years.

Thi size and age structure of Lepiclonotus squomatus and Harmothoe imhircata polulations were studied in
mussel collectors established in ihe Kandalaksha Bay (the White Sea) in July of 1996 and 1997. Five age and
size groups wcre distinguished in Ihe L. squamnlrr.r population. The accordance between these groups ^by the
"pro6abiliry paper" rnethod and counting of growth iines on labial plates of jaws is demonslrated. The forma-
tion of the fiist-growth line takes place in the pcriod between the first and second years of life. The maximum
lif'e span of this-species is not more than five years. The number of growth lines on the jaws of H. intbricata
varics fiont 0 to 3. The firrmation of the firts sorwth line occurs in the first year of life. The maximum life span
is three years.

The number of growth lines on jaws ranged from 0 (smallest specimens) to 3 (largest specimens ) (Fig. 5, 6B), with the first growth line more likely appearing during the first year of life (Britayev et al., 2002). The comparison of these two methods allowed estimating the maximal worm’s age as 3+ years. ...
... In the White Sea, H. imbricata demonstrated to be a polytelic species (authors, unpublished data), while in the Black Sea it was apparently monotelic, with most of the worms dying after breeding (Britayev, Belov, 1993) as it happened in the North Sea (Daly et al., 1972 ) and Baltic Sea populations of Harmothoe sarsii (Sarvala, 1971). In the case of Lepidonotus squamatus, the maximum life span in the White Sea (estimated by means of the growth lines on the jaws) was seven years (Britayev et al., 2002), while in the Sea of Japan the species only reached five years (Britayev, Belov, 1993). In all cases, however, this species was polytelic. ...

Under the critical environmental conditions of the White Sea, Lepidonotus squamatus and Harmothoe imbricata coexist in the same habitat, often showing recurrent alternations in dominance. L. squamatus is a long-living, slow growing broadcast spawner, while H. imbricata is a short-living and quick growing species, with complex reproductive behaviour. These different life strategies may allow them to respond in a different way to the environmental limitations of the study site, this likely being the most appropriate explanation to the observed alternation in dominance.
... Most Polychaeta have low individual weights and short life cycles (Britaev et al. 2002). This combination of life strategies results in high P/Bratios (Zaika 1970, Banse & Mosher 1980, which is also shown in the present study where the Polychaeta P/Bratio was the highest of all statistical groups. ...

Macrobenthic invertebrate biomass, productivity (P/(B) over bar ratio) and production were estimated for a high-latitude fjord ecosystem, Sorfjord, North Norway. A model including individual weight, temperature, depth, taxonomical group, tidal-zone position, faunal category, motility and habitat was used to estimate P/(B) over bar ratios, and production was calculated by multiplying P/(B) over bar by biomass. Average biomass, production, abundance and P/(B) over bar were 307 g wet weight (ww) m(-2) (SE = 84, SD = 595, n = 50), 89 g ww m(-2) yr(-1) (SE = 16, SD = 112, n = 50), 1912 N m(-2) (SE = 204, SD = 1442, n = 50) and 0.29 yr(-1), respectively. Converted to energy, average biomass was 441 kJ m(-2) and production 185 kJ m(-2) yr(-1). Horizontal and vertical trends were only detected for abundance, but a Monte Carlo test confirmed that subareas, depth and sediments explained a significant part of the variance in the community composition. Polychaeta was the most abundant and productive group, while large mussels (Arctica islandica and Musculus niger) and detrivorous asteroids (Ctenodiscus crispatus) dominated biomass. Even if biomass should always be measured for the area in question, P/(B) over bar ratios from this study are considered reasonable for other North Norwegian fjords and coastal areas with similar conditions when an approximate measure of production is needed. In Sorfjord, the macrobenthic invertebrate production was much higher than the amount eaten by fish, and predatory benthos are probably more important consumers of benthic invertebrates.
... In Phyllodocida jaw growth is restricted to the basal parts (Olive, 1977(Olive, , 1980. Since these jaws have a lifelong growth period, growthlines can usually be observed (Kirkegaard, 1970;Olive, 1977Olive, , 1980Tzetlin, 1990;Britaev & Belov, 1993;Britaev et al., 2002). Jaws of this type are the only ones found in Phyllodocida and applies for the mandibles in Lumbrinereidae, Onuphidae, Eunicidae and Ampharetidae as well (Wolf, 1980;Colbath, 1986;A.B. ...

The alimentary canal of polychaetes consists of a foregut, midgut, and hindgut. The alimentary canal shows different specializations even in homonomously segmented polychaetes. The foregut gives rise to the buccal cavity, pharnyx and oesophagus, the midgut may be divided into a stomach and the intestine proper. Since polychaetes use a wide spectrum of food sources, structures involved in feeding vary as well and show numerous specializations. In the foregut these specializations may be classified as one of the following types: dorsolateral folds, ventral pharynx, axial muscular pharynx, axial non-muscular proboscis and dorsal pharynx. The latter, typical of oligochaetous Clitellata, occurs rarely in polychaetes. The structure, evolution and phylogenetic importance of these different types are described and discussed. Axial muscular and ventral pharynges may be armed with jaws, sclerotized parts of the pharyngeal cuticle. Terminology, structure, occurrence and development of the jaws are briefly reviewed. Special attention has been paid to the jaws of Eunicida including extinct and extant forms. Conflicting theories about the evolution of the jaws in Eunicida are discussed. The epithelia of the intestine may form a pseudostratified epithelium composed of glandular cells, absorptive cells and ciliated cells or only one cell type having similar functions. A conspicuous feature in the intestine of certain polychaetes is the occurrence of unicellular tubular structures, called enteronephridia. So far these enteronephridia are only known in a few meiofauna species.

The study presented here is the first in a series on the scale worms of the seas surrounding the Arabian Peninsula: Suez Canal, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, The Gulf. Based on type specimens and additional published and unpublished specimens, this is the first revision of the Polynoidae that are currently recognised from this area. Detailed descriptions and figures are provided as well as identification keys to all taxa, and taxonomic problems are discussed. Discussions of the distribution, faunal affinities, Lessepsian migration and endemism are given in a Zoogeographic account. The occurrence of 44 species belonging to 23 genera and seven subfamilies is confirmed. Twenty-three species represent new records for one or more of the respective seas. Four new species are described: Harmothoe marerubrum n. sp., Lepidonotus polae n. sp., Parahalosydnopsis arabica n. sp., Pararctonoella marginopapillata n. sp.; and Uncopolynoinae n. subf. is introduced. Harmothoe grisea, Lepidasthenia nuda and Lepidonotus impatiens are redescribed. Bouchiria, Iphione reticulata, Lepidonotus impatiens meridionalis and L. australiensis are considered junior synonyms. Harmothoe vesicudenta is transferred to the genus Malmgreniella. The diagnoses of 10 genera are emended. The fauna documented is closely related to that of the Indo-West Pacific with at least 30 species out of 44 in common. Two species are likely to represent Lessepsian and two Anti-Lessepsian migrants. For the present, 10 species (23 %) are considered endemic to the area.

Abra prismatica (Montagu, 1808) and Gari fervensis (Gmelin, 1791) were found in the Russian sector of the Barents Sea in 2008–2010 for the first time. These data allowed us to propose the expansion of their geographical range by at least 300 km to the east. Such a range expansion is probably preconditioned by the current warming trend observed for the Murman coast of the Barents Sea. The biology, ecology, and life cycle of both species are discussed. We suggest that the life cycle of A. prismatica has changed in the northern part of its geographic range.

A population of the two species, Nephtys hombergii Savigny and N. caeca Fabricius, has been studied for a period of 3 years. Three separate but related aspects of the biology of these species have been investigated; gametogenesis (Olive, 1976a, and in preparation), reproductive endocrinology (Olive, 1976 a, b) and the life-history and population structure which is the subject of the present report. Nephtys species are particularly interesting for studies of this kind since Kirkegaard (1970) described rings in the teeth of N. hombergii which were thought to represent annual growth rings. Estcourt (1975) has found that these rings can be used to age the nephtyid species Aglaophamus verrilli in New Zealand which is a slow growing species living to at least 5 years of age. The degree of overlap between the successive generations, as indicated by the rings in the teeth, emphasizes how difficult age analysis of populations with this type of growth is without additional information of this kind. This problem is particularly acute in long lived polytelic (= iteroparous, Gadgil & Bossert, 1970) species. Olive (1975) has discussed the problem with reference to Eulalia viridis and other recently investigated polychaetes but it is not peculiar to Polychaeta as, for instance, Lewis & Bowman (1975) have shown in a particularly detailed study of populations of Patella vulgata.

The embryos of Harmotho imbricata (L.) are protected during their early development as a mass under the scales of the female parent. Eggs are shed into the space under the scales through nephridial papillae which elongate and turn dorsally as the female matures. The mass is held together by an adhesive layer surrounding each egg. Maturation begins in September and breeding occurs during March and April, when each female spawns twice in succession. Males contain mature sperm throughout the breeding season and shed only a small proportion at each spawning. As the polychaetes mature, pairs are formed with the male resting on the dorsal surface of the female. When the female spawns, the male sheds sperm over the egg mass and the two animals then separate. The sperm has a long acrosome to penetrate the adhesive layer around the egg. Embryo-protecting species in other groups of polychaeces show parallel specialization in sperm structure and in breeding behaviour. A chronology has been established for the development of embryos up to their release from the parent, and this can be used to estimate the spawning date of females with embryo masses collected on the shore. Individuals grow at widely varying rates after settlement on the shore, and no year classes could be detected in the population. All individuals spawn in the first spring after settlement, and at least some survive to spawn again in one or more subsequent springs.

A Northumberland (England) population of Melinna cristata was studied from October, 1967 to February, 1970. M. cristata is a gregarious sedentary polychaete which lives in muddy substrates. It is dioecious, and has a very restricted breeding season. The gametes are shed solely by the two pairs of posterior nephridia, which undergo morphological changes just before the breeding season; this allows them to accommodate the mature gametes. After spawning, these nephridia ternal and, within 2 to 3 weeks of spawning, the benthic larvae metamorphose into juveniles. The juveniles grow from 3 to 10 mm during their first year, and can be distinguished from the rest of the population by their size and the complete absence of coelomic gametes. After about 12 months, the juveniles release their first batch of gametes into the coelom from the germinal epithelium, and they then cannot be distinguished from the rest of the population. The development of coelomic gametes takes 7 to 10 months to complete, so M. cristata is potentially capable of breeding for the first time when 2 years old. The majority of worms survive spawning, and M. cristata probably breeds annually for several years. In this population, not all potential breeders spawn, some resorb their mature gametes and release another batch of gametes into the coelom. The Northumberland population of M. cristata is near the southernmost limit of the species distribution, which suggests that environmental conditions for this population are not optimum. The population appears to maintain itself by producing fewer oocytes and by only part of the population spawning.
