Abstract and Figures

Bruhat-trayi and Laghu-trayi are excellent, highly respected and widely used sources of Ayurvedic knowledge. Ayurveda delineates the use of Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn.) for the management of different disease conditions. This article reviews the various references of Yashtimadhu in Ayurvedic texts; Bruhat-trayi and Laghu-trayi, regarding its therapeutic uses, different formulations and its prime indication. It is observed that the Yashtimadhu is used in 252 formulations among which 179 and 69 are for internal and external use respectively which are effective in more than 55 disease conditions. Maximum numbers of formulations are reported for their indication in vatarakta (gout), vrana (wound), visarpa (erysipelas), visharoga (poison), netraroga (eye disease), kustha (skin disease), vidradhi (abscess), jwara (fever), rasayana (rejuvenator), vajikarana (aphrodisiac) etc. Yashtimadhu is used in about 22 dosage forms; such as taila (oil), ghrita (fat soluble preparations), lepa (paste), kashaya (decoction), churna (powder), gutika (pills) etc.

INTRODUCTION
The knowledge about medicinal plants in the
early age was documented systematically and
organized scientifically in Ayurvedic Samhitas,
Nighantus and other texts; in which we can get
so many references of medicinal plants [1].
The Bruhat-Trayi or "Triad of the Great" is
also sometimes called the Vruddha-Trayi
which means "the triad of the old/mature
(classics or authors)". The Bruhat-Trayi refers
to three early Sanskrit encyclopaedias of
medicine. These are contrasted with the
Laghu-Trayi or the "lesser triad", a secondary
set of later authoritative compositions [2].
Bruhat-trayi includes Charaka Samhita, which
was composed by Agnivesa and later edited by
Charaka; Sushruta Samhita which was
composed by Sushruta and Ashtanga
Hridayam Samhita which was composed by
Vagbhata. Laghutrayi includes Sharangdhar
Samhita, written by Acharya Sharangdhara
around 1226 AD, Bhavpakash, written by
Acharya Bhavmisra around 1558 AD and
Madhav nidana, written by Acharya Madhav,
around 7th8th century AD.
Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn. belonging to the
family of fabaceae. It is a perennial herb with
a thick rootstock passing below into long,
straight, cylindrical, slightly tapering, smooth,
flexible, slightly branched roots, about
1.25 cm in diameter, red or orange-brown on
the surface, pale yellow within, and giving off
at the top long horizontal subterranean stolons
[3]. Yashtimadhu is used in the hoarseness of
voice as a Payasa (rice-milk) prepared with
Yashtimadhu and mixed with Ghrita. Paste of
Yashtimadhu and Katuka should be taken with
sugar water. Intake of Madhuka powder with
milk acts as Rasayana particularly intellect-
promoting. In Vatarakta predominant in Vata,
goat milk mixed with half oil and Madhuka
10 gm should be given [4]. Glycyrrhiza glabra
Linn. has various pharmacological activities
like antibacterial activity, antithrombotic
effect, hepatoprotective effect, anticonvulsant
effects, cerebroprotective effect,
antidyslipidaemic activity, memory enhancing
activity, antioxidant potential activity, hair
growth promoting activity etc. [5].

In the present review article, attempt has been
made to compile various formulations of
Yashtimadhu with their indication from
Bruhat-trayi and Laghu-trayi and present in a
systemic manner.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
In this review article Charkasamhita,
Sushrutsamhita, Ashtangahrudayam,
Sharangadhara and Bhavaprakshasamhita were
referred. These 5 books were consulted for the
formulations containing Yashtimadhu as one
of the ingredients. All the compiled data was
arranged systematically and presented
alphabetically with their respective
Panchavidha Kashaya Kalpana (dosage form),
Adhikara (prime indication) and internal or
external mode of administration.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Classical texts of Ayurveda systematically
documented the pharmacological properties,
actions, formulations, indications and
contraindications of the plant drug.
Yashtimadhu is being used as an ingredient in
near about 252 formulations used in different
diseased conditions. Among them 169 and 79
for internal and external use respectively and 4
formulations are indicated for both internal
and external uses. Among the maximum
number of formulations observed were;
Charakasamhita 86, followed by
Bhavprakashasamhita 63, Ashtangahrudaya
45, Sharangdharasamhita 31 and
Sushrutasamhita 45.
Maximum number of formulations i.e. (27) is
being used in vatarakta (gout), followed by 24
in jwara (fever) 17 in vrana (wound) 15 in
netraroga (eye disease) 14 in visharoga
(poison condition) 12 in viasrpa (erysipelas) 9
in kustha (skin disease) 8 in vajikarana
(aphrodisiac) 7 in rasayana (rejuvenator) and
mukharoga (mouth disease) etc. Among the
different formulations maximum number of
formulations were, taila (oil) 73, followed by
Ghrita (fat soluble preparations) 60, lepa
(paste) 27, Kashaya (decoction) 23, Churna
(powder) 13, gutika (pills) 10, Avleha 7, varti
and anjana 5 etc.

CONCLUSIONS
Yashtimadhu is used in the various disease
conditions such as vatarakta, jwara, vrana,
netraroga, visharoga, viasrpa, kustha,
vajikarana, rasayana, mukharoga etc. It is
used in more than 252 classical formulations,
among them 179 internal and 69 externally
used, 4 formulations are indicated for both
internal and external uses, more than 22
dosage forms, used in about 55 diseased
conditions. Hence, it is highly required to
discover its potential within the field of
medicinal sciences for rewarding application
of this plant.

Glycyrrhiza glabra Linn. commonly known as Licorice/Liquorice, Sweet wood, Mulahatti and Yashtimadhu. Glycyrrhiza glabra is a widely used classical medicinal plant and is found in numerous traditional formulas. The root of G.glabra relieves thirst, cough, asthma, bronchitis, abdominal colic, eye troubles and cures ulcers. The main chemical constituent of liquorice is glycyrrhizin (about 2-9%), a triterpene saponin with low haemolytic index. Glycyrrhetinic (glycyrrhetic) acid (0.5-0.9%), the aglycon of glycyrrhizin is also present in the root. Other active constituents of liquorice include isoflavonoids, chalcones, coumarins, triterpenoids and sterols, lignans, amino acids, amines, gums and volatile oils which are found to be responsible for its various activities like wound healing activity, antiulcer activity, memory enhancing activity, hair growth promoting activity, antithrombotic effect, hepatoprotective effect, cerebroprotective effect, antidyslipidaemic activity, antioxidant activity etc. The present review study is an attempt to provide reported information on its phyto-constituents and pharmacological activities.
