The Impact of Arts-Based Leadership Development on Leader Mind-Set: A Field Experiment

The Problem Arts-based leadership interventions have gained a foothold in the leadership development literature; however, few studies have investigated their effectiveness. These interventions include music, drama, art, and performance and are utilized to develop dimensions of leader mind-set. [Show full abstract] Utilizing a quasi-experimental, pre-test, post-test design, we evaluate the impact of an arts-based intervention on four dimensions of leader mind-set: emotional intelligence, leader identity, openness to experience, and feedback orientation. Leaders in the arts-based intervention showed significantly greater improvement in emotional intelligence, leader identity, and feedback orientation. The Stakeholders This article informs leadership development researchers, those making decisions about investment in leadership development and those who deliver leadership development. The article will be of interest to organizations that have to justify investment in leadership development.

In this study, we investigate collaboration efforts between leaders at schools of music and performing arts and leaders at compulsory schools, as well as the drivers behind the initiation and maintenance of such collaborative work. The music education business is worth an estimated £5 million in the UK each year. There is plentiful literature examining the role that teachers and parents can play in supporting children in their musical learning, and the positive impact of music education on children's intellectual, emotional and musical development. However, there is no guidance on the relative importance of children or ... [Show full abstract] parents as initiators or influencers in the decision to start or continue lessons. This paper therefore examines the relative influence of family members on consumption decisions relating to music education. This paper indicates that in terms of music education, the role of initiator can be attributed to parents. Although many parents indicate strong influence from children and grandparents, the views on the influence of school, siblings or the child's friends were more differentiated. It concludes that to market music education effectively, marketers must identify who makes and has input into the buying decision.
