Effect of Nonsaponifiable Fraction of Avocado Oil on Body Weight, Body Fat and Blood Lipid Profile of Broiler Chickens

Abstract

Accumulation of body fat is the major problem associated with initiation of various diseases in fast growing broiler chickens. Methods to restrict the accumulation of body fat have met with limited success. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Avocado Non-Saponifiable Fraction (NSF) in broiler chicken (from day 14 for 27 days) on body fat accumulation, growth performance, organ weight and plasma lipid profile. Supplementation of avocado NSF for 27 days has resulted in positive changes in plasma lipid profile with 50% decrease of abdominal fat and 33.8% increase in body weight compared with normal control chickens. The Avocado NSF improved body composition in broilers through higher lean-to-fat ratio and hence has a potential to improve overall health profile and reduce metabolic diseases in chickens.

This study was carried out to examine the comparative effects of coconut oil (CO), avocado oil (AO), and melon seed oil (MSO) on the growth performance, blood, biochemical, hematological parameters, and total microbial loads of Noiler birds. A total of 120 Noiler birds with an average weight of 50.3 ± 0.13 g were randomized into four treatment groups with 3 replications (10 per pen) for six weeks of fattening. Weekly body weight gain and daily feed intake of the birds were recorded for six weeks, after which average weight gain and feed conversion ratios were calculated. At the end of the feeding trials, blood samples were collected for biochemical and hematological parameter assessments, and the digesta from the colon and ileum were collected for their intestinal total microbial load analysis. The average weight gains and feed conversion ratios (FCR) of the birds supplemented with CO (1229.40 ± 15.00) and MSO (1232.66 ± 43.18) were observed to be significantly higher (P < 0.05), compared to the birds supplemented with AO (1110.73 ± 18.29) and the birds fed feed only (1034.79 ± 2.04) having the least weight gained. The biochemical parameters of the birds across the treatment were not significantly different (P > 0.05). White blood cells, packed cell volume, red blood cells and lymphocytes were significantly higher in the CO group compared to the birds supplemented with the avocado oil and melon seed oil. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the weight of the spleen, bursa and gall bladder among the birds. The Lactobacillus spp. in the colon of birds supplemented with coconut oil (6.43 ± 0.56) and melon oil (6.25 ± 0.65) were significantly higher. It can be concluded that coconut oil and melon seed oil have the potential to serve as growth promoters for chicken production.

High-fat and high-carbohydrate (HF-HC) diets induce metabolic syndrome via mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. We have previously shown that this may be prevented by avocado oil, a source of bioactive molecules with antioxidant properties. However, it is unknown if these effects are mediated by the unsaponifiable fraction of avocado oil (UFAO). Thus, we tested if this fraction improves glucose metabolism, bioenergetics and oxidative stress in mitochondria from the kidney and liver of rats fed an HF-HC diet. We found that 12 weeks of an HF-HC diet impaired glucose utilization and increased insulin resistance, which was prevented by UFAO administration. The HF-HC diet decreased respiration, membrane potential and electron transport chain (ETC) function in liver and kidney mitochondria. These mitochondrial dysfunctions were prevented by UFAO intake. Unexpectedly, UFAO increased ROS levels in the mitochondria of control animals and did not decrease them in rats with an HF-HC diet; however, UFAO protects liver and kidney mitochondria from iron-induced oxidative stress. These findings suggest that impairments in glucose metabolism and mitochondrial function by an HF-HC diet may be prevented by UFAO, without decreasing ROS generation but protecting mitochondria from oxidative damage.

The major goals of the poultry industry are to increase the carcass yield and to reduce carcass fatness, mainly the abdominal fat pad. The increase in poultry meat consumption has guided the selection process toward fast-growing broilers with a reduced feed conversion ratio. Intensive selection has led to great improvements in economic traits such as body weight gain, feed efficiency, and breast yield to meet the demands of consumers, but modern commercial chickens exhibit excessive fat accumulation in the abdomen area. However, dietary composition and feeding strategies may offer practical and efficient solutions for reducing body fat deposition in modern poultry strains. Thus, the regulation of lipid metabolism to reduce the abdominal fat content based on dietary composition and feeding strategy, as well as elucidating their effects on the key enzymes associated with lipid metabolism, could facilitate the production of lean meat and help to understand the fat-lowering effects of diet and different feeding strategies.

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of feed restriction on the incidence of sudden death syndrome (SDS). Body weight, feed efficiency, and incidence of SDS were compared for broilers fed ad libitum and broilers restricted in feed intake by 25%. Six pens of 50 male broilers were fed commercial-type texture diets ad libitum, and six pens of birds were restricted to 75% of this intake from 5 to 39 days of age. Growth rate and the incidence of SDS were significantly higher in ad libitum-fed broilers. Feed efficiency was better in the ad libitum-fed group up to 11 days of age and then became similar to that of the restricted group. Results support the hypothesis that the incidence of SDS is related to growth rate and suggest that SDS mortality may be reduced by growing broilers at a slower rate.

The relative contributions of genetic selection and dietary regimen on the performance of broilers was assessed. Body weight, feed consumption, mortality (M), and the degree of tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) were measured in the 1957 Athens-Canadian Randombred Control (ACRBC) strain of broilers and in the 1991 Arbor Acres (AA) feather-sexable strain when fed "typical" 1957 and 1991 diets. Energy and protein levels, vitamin and mineral packs, and the coccidiostats used in the two dietary regimens were chosen to be representative of those in use by the industry for the two time periods. Eight treatment groups, i.e., two strains, two sexes, and two dietary regimens, were assigned into four blocks of eight litter floor pens for grow out. The 1957 diets were fed as mash, and the 1991 starter and grower diets were fed as crumbles and pellets, respectively. Feed consumption and BW were recorded at 21, 42, 56, 70, and 84 d of age, a period covering the normal marketing ages for the two broilers. Mortality and the cause of death was recorded daily. The incidence and severity of TD was assessed using a Lixiscope at 42 d of age. Average BW were 190, 508, 790, 1,087, and 1,400 g for the ACRBC on the 1957 diets vs 700, 2,132, 3,108, 3,812, and 4,498 g for the AA on the 1991 diets at 21, 42, 56, 70, and 84 d of age, respectively. The 1991 diets increased the BW of the AA by an average of 14% (20% at 42 d, but only 8% at 84 d) and of the ACRBC by 22%. The BW advantage for the 1991 diet over the 1957 diet for the AA was less for males than for females after 42 d of age, and the advantage decreased with age, probably due to the increasing incidence of leg problems. The M for AA was 9.1% vs 3.3% for the ACRBC at 42 d. Most of the ACRBC M occurred before 21 d, whereas M occurred throughout for the AA, with most after 21 d due to flip-overs and ascites. The feed conversion at 42 d for the ACRBC on the 1957 diet was 3.00 vs 2.04 for the AA on the 1991 diet. The AA on the 1991 diet had a 48.6% incidence of TD vs 25.6% on the 1957 diet. The ACRBC had approximately 1.2% TD on both diets. The TD was more severe with the 1991 diet.

There have been significant increases in growth and development of commercial broilers, turkeys, and ducks. The large decline in days to market and disproportional increases in breast yield have contributed to greater incidences of various skeletal anomalies. Across all three species, tibial dyschondroplasia is observed about half-way through the growing period (50%), but in each case the birds have achieved 40% or less of their final BW. Relative tibia development (length and width) is significantly slower in broilers compared with turkeys and ducks, which suggests a greater susceptibility to biomechanical problems, the end result of which is abnormal long bone development. There are relatively few studies that have addressed changes in the femur as well as the tibia. There are indications that mineralization rates and other aspects of femur development occur more slowly than what is observed for the tibia. In this regard, the femur may be the weak link with respect to long bone developmental abnormalities. Nutrient restriction during short periods of the growout has proven to be an effective way of decreasing leg abnormalities. In all cases, however, there are corresponding declines in BW at normal market ages and associated declines in absolute breast muscle development. In the future, however, these fractional losses in measures of carcass yield may still be economically advantageous compared with the cost of increased leg problems under field conditions.

The effects of lard added to starter diets on various serum lipids were determined in broiler chickens between 14 and 42 d of age. Nonisocaloric starter diets were formulated to contain either 0, 3, or 7% added lard, where the megacaloric percentages of all major nutrients were held constant. Birds received either 0, 3, or 7% added lard in starter diets through 10 d of age (S1), followed by either 3 or 7% added dietary lard through 21 d of age (S2). All possible combinations of the three S1 diets and two S2 diets yielded six total dietary treatments. A common grower diet was provided after 21 d. Concentrations of various serum lipids were determined weekly from 14 to 42 d of age. The effects of both the S1 and S2 diets on total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) were inconsistent and were influenced by sex between 14 and 42 d of age. However, serum triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations showed progressive increases over the 14 to 42 d period in birds that received dietary lard at either level in the S1 diet. These same serum constituents also increased to the greatest extents over the same period when birds were provided 3% added lard in the S2 diet. It was concluded that the response of broiler chickens between 14 and 42 d to different levels of dietary lard were influenced by age of feeding during the starter period. Furthermore, the specific effects of the diets on serum cholesterol, LDLC, and HDLC concentrations between 14 and 42 d varied with the sex and age of the bird.

Birds have evolved alternate physiologic strategies to contend with dehydration, starvation, malnutrition, and reproduction. Basic anatomic and functional differences between birds and mammals impact clinical chemistry values and their evaluation. Interpretation of the results of standard biochemical analyses, including BUN, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, creatine kinase, gamma glutamyltransferase, bilirubin, ammonia, alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, bile acids, glucose, albumin, globulins, calcium, phosphorus, prealbumin (transthyretin), fibrinogen, iron, and ferritin, is reviewed and discussed in relation to these physiological differences. The use and interpretation of alternative analytes appropriate for avian species, such as uric acid, biliverdin, glutamate dehydrogenase, and galactose clearance, also are reviewed. Normal avian urine and appropriate use of urinalysis, an integral part of laboratory diagnosis in mammalian species that frequently is omitted from avian diagnostic protocols, is discussed.

Body weight, feed consumption, and mortality were measured in the 1957 Athens-Canadian Randombred Control (ACRBC) strain and in the 2001 Ross 308 strain of broilers when fed representative 1957 and 2001 diets. The dietary regimens were chosen to be representative of those used in the industry in 1957 vs. 2001. The 1957 diets were fed as mash, the 2001 starter was as crumbles, and the grower and finisher diets were pellets. Feed consumption and BW were recorded at 21, 42, 56, 70, and 84 d of age to cover the two broiler strains normal span of marketing ages. Mortality was low, and the mortality of the ACRBC was approximately half that of the modem strain. Average BW for the ACRBC on the 1957 diets were 176, 539,809, 1,117, and 1,430 g vs. 743, 2,672, 3,946, 4,808, and 5,520 g for the Ross 308 on the 2001 diets at 21, 42, 56, 70, and 84 d of age, respectively. The 42-d feed conversion (FC) on the 2001 and 1957 feeds for the Ross 308 were 1.62 and 1.92 with average BW of 2,672 and 2,126 g and for the ACRBC were 2.14 and 2.34 with average BW of 578 and 539 g, respectively. The Ross 308 broiler on the 2001 feed was estimated to have reached 1,815 g BW at 32 d of age with a FC of 1.47, whereas the ACRBC on the 1957 feed would not have reached that BW until 101 d of age with a FC of 4.42.

Both energy restriction (ER) per se and weight loss improve glucose metabolism in obese insulin-treated type 2 diabetic patients. Short-term ER decreases basal endogenous glucose production (EGP) but not glucose disposal. In contrast the blood glucose-lowering mechanism of long-term ER with substantial weight loss has not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of loss of 50% of excess weight [50% excess weight reduction (EWR)] on EGP, whole-body insulin sensitivity and the disturbed myocellular insulin-signalling pathway in ten obese insulin-treated type 2 diabetic patients. A euglycaemic-hyperinsulinaemic clamp with stable isotopes ([6,6-(2)H2]glucose and [2H5]glycerol) combined with skeletal muscle biopsies was performed during a very low energy diet (VLED; 1,883 kJ/day) on day 2 and again after 50% EWR. Oral blood glucose-lowering agents and insulin were discontinued 3 weeks prior to the VLED and at the start of the VLED, respectively. Loss of 50% EWR (20.3+/-2.2 kg from day 2 to day of 50% EWR) normalised basal EGP and improved insulin sensitivity, especially insulin-stimulated glucose disposal (18.8+/-2.0 to 39.1+/-2.8 micromol kg fat-free mass(-1) min(-1), p=0.001). The latter was accompanied by improved insulin signalling at the level of the recently discovered protein kinase B/Akt substrates AS160 and PRAS40 along with a decrease in intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) content. Considerable weight loss in obese, insulin-treated type 2 diabetic patients normalises basal EGP and improves insulin sensitivity resulting from an improvement in insulin signal transduction in skeletal muscle. The decrease in IMCL might contribute to this effect.

The avocado (Persea americana) is a major crop commodity worldwide. Moreover, avocado, a paleopolyploid, is an evolutionary "outpost" among flowering plants, representing a basal lineage (the magnoliid clade) near the origin of the flowering plants themselves. Following centuries of selective breeding, avocado germplasm has been characterized at the level of microsatellite and RFLP markers. Nonetheless, little is known beyond these general diversity estimates, and much work remains to be done to develop avocado as a major subtropical-zone crop. Among the goals of avocado improvement are to develop varieties with fruit that will "store" better on the tree, show uniform ripening and have better post-harvest storage. Avocado transcriptome sequencing, genome mapping and partial genomic sequencing will represent a major step toward the goal of sequencing the entire avocado genome, which is expected to aid in improving avocado varieties and production, as well as understanding the evolution of flowers from non-flowering seed plants (gymnosperms). Additionally, continued evolutionary and other comparative studies of flower and fruit development in different avocado strains can be accomplished at the gene expression level, including in comparison with avocado relatives, and these should provide important insights into the genetic regulation of fruit development in basal angiosperms.

The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence and the extent of leg problems in broiler chicks reared in conventional production systems in Denmark. The survey, which was designed as a cross-sectional study, included 28 broiler flocks (8% of the total number of flocks in Denmark); 2800 chicks in total (100 chicks per flock) were investigated for the occurrence of leg disorders in relation to animal welfare. The leg disorders included impaired walking ability, tibial dyschondroplasia (TD), varus/valgus deformations, crooked toes, foot pad burns, and asymmetrical development of the tarsometatarsus. The mean prevalence of impaired walking ability (gait score >0), tibial dyschondroplasia (TD score >0), varus/valgus deformations, crooked toes and foot pad burns was 75.0%, 57.1%, 37.0%, 32.6% and 42.0%, respectively. The risks of the occurrence of these leg problems were significantly influenced by body weight and sex of the chicks. For birds with impaired walking ability (corresponding to gait scores >0 and >2), significant interactions were found between body weight and sex. Positive correlations (r >0.20) were found between gait score and TD score, gait score and varus/valgus deformations, TD score and varus/valgus deformations, varus/valgus deformations and body weight, crooked toes and body weight, and between varus/valgus deformations and body weight. Only weak correlations were found between the relative asymmetry in the length, thickness and diameter of the tarsometatarsus and the other leg problems measured. It was concluded that the prevalence of leg problems in broilers in conventional production systems is very high and compromises the welfare of the birds. One of the main factors responsible is their high growth rate.

1. Carcass fat distribution and meat quality were studied in 52‐d‐old cockerels of the th generation of selection for low ('lean') or high ('fat') abdominal fat content.2. Compared with lean birds, there was four times more abdominal fat, 2.8 times more subcutaneous fat and 1.5 times more fat deposited between the leg muscles in fat birds. Chemical estimation of the fat content of thigh muscle, however, revealed no difference between these two lines.3. No clear differences were observed for cooking losses, flavour and juiciness, while tenderness appeared to be a little higher in fat birds.4. These results suggest that breeding for a low abdominal fat depot is advantageous in terms of carcass quality.

The modern poultry industry has a remarkable record in reducing mortality, applying a combination of effective disease control, adequate nutrition, good husbandry and genetic selection. Primary breed-ers, specialized in the adaptation of layers, broilers and turkeys to changing demands of a global food market, have made three major contributions in the past: (1) eradication of vertically transmit-ted disease agents such as lymphoid leucosis viruses, mycoplasmas and salmonellae; (2) selection between and within lines for general liveability and specific disease resistance; and (3) dissemina-tion of management recommendations which may help customers to minimize losses at the com-mercial level. Current focus is on components of liveability which are directly or indirectly linked to poultry welfare: selection against feather pecking and cannibalism in egg-type chickens and selec-tion against leg disorders and heart/lung dysfunction in rapidly growing meat poultry.

The unsaponifiable part of avocado pear oil, after heating during extraction and processing, contains an abundant fraction that has never been found in the unsaponifiable part of usual vegetable oils nor in cold-pressed avocado oil. Nine components were detected. Eight of them could be identified through chromatographic fractionations and spectroscopic analysis, mainly by mass spectrometry and proton nuclear magnetic resonance. These products are characterized by a homogeneous structure. A furyl nucleus is substituted in position 2 by an aliphatic, mono- or polyunsaturated chain. The chainlength varies from 13 to 17 carbon atoms. The carbon number is always odd. The significance of these components in the biological effects of avocado oil unsaponifiables is still being studied.

The effect of 2% dietary cholesterol on the distribution of cholesterol among the plasma lipoproteins was studied in 2-week old male chickens. Very-low-, intermediate-, low- and high-density lipoproteins (VLDL, IDL, LDL and HDL) were separated from plasma by density gradient ultracentrifugation in order to determine their concentration and chemical composition. VLDL were furthermore characterized as concerned their size, mobility and protein content. The lipoprotein profile was quantitatively and qualitatively normal in the control group (n = 6) fed the diet without cholesterol, HDL representing the major lipoprotein class (5.06 ± 0.36 g/l) and the main carrier of cholesterol. Birds fed the cholesterol containing diets for 5 weeks (n = 6) exhibited a dramatic hypercholesterolemia (1.60 ± 0.89 g/l free cholesterol and 6.70 ± 3.22 g/l cholesteryl esters) and a shift in their lipoprotein pattern, with an accumulation of β-VLDL (6.08 ± 4.21 g/l) and a marked decrease in HDL level (3.53 ± 0.91 g/l). The decrease or absence of LDL was balanced by a considerable amount of β-VLDL remnants (namely IDL), so that the concentration of IDL + LDL considered as a whole was not modified significantly (2.10 ± 0.95 g/l compared to 1.66± 1.13 g/l in controls). Chicken β-VLDL, smaller in size (31.0 nm) than control VLDL (33.5 nm), were typically enriched in cholesterol (67%) but they lacked apoE. About 60% of plasma cholesterol was associated with β-VLDL which therefore represented the main atherogenic lipoprotein class and were probably responsible for the greater amount of cholesterol found in the aorta in these chickens (2.44 ± 0.99 mg/g aorta vs. 1.32 ± 0.57 in controls). Since LDL were very reduced or absent, the cholesterol-fed chicken provides a suitable model in which to study the role of β-VLDL in atherogenesis.

Eight hundred broilers were examined to define the reference values of nine blood constituents (total proteins, albumin, total and free cholesterol, triglycerides, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), calcium, and phosphorus). The broilers, coming from 20 different commercial poultry operations, were equally divided into different groups according to age (21 and 45 days), strain (Arbor Acres and Hybro), sex, and sampling season (summer or winter). Age and sampling season were the variation sources that most influenced the values of the hematochemical variables examined. The interaction of age with strain influenced total proteins, total and free cholesterol, triglycerides, and ALP. The interaction of age with sampling season influenced all hematochemical constituents except triglycerides. Reference limits defined by .975 and .025 fractiles were computed for each blood constituent according to the significance of different variation sources and their combinations. Reference limits defined herein could be used as indicators of metabolic and health conditions of a poultry farm.

1. The physiological and metabolic effects of a short term food restriction of broiler chickens at an early age and grown to 49 d of age were examined. 2. Fat accretion was measured by tritium dilution. Adipocyte characteristics of the fat tissue were examined by cell counting after fixation with osmium tetroxide and the metabolic effects of food restrictions were measured by closed-circuit respiration calorimetry. 3. The success of food restrictions in allowing full bodyweight recovery and producing decreases in body fat was associated with a negative energy balance and a positive nitrogen balance achieved during the restriction phase. 4. Food restrictions produced decreases in body fat possibly by causing a delay in adipocyte hyperplasia. Excess dietary energy was then lost as heat until adipocyte hyperplasia re-commenced allowing the bird to store surplus dietary energy as fat. 5. A food restriction that allows full bodyweight recovery and maximum carcase fat reduction in the broiler chicken at 49 d may not be appropriate for birds grown for longer periods.

The effects of insulin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on amino acid transport and protein metabolism were compared in myotubes derived from chicken breast muscle satellite cells. Protein synthesis was assessed by continuous labelling with [3H]-tyrosine. Protein degradation was estimated by the release of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) soluble radioactivity by cells which had been previously labelled with [3H]-tyrosine for 3 days. Amino acid transport was measured in myotubes incubated in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM) 0.5% bovine serum albumin (BSA) with or without insulin or IGF-I. Subsequent [3H]-aminoisobutyric acid (AIB) uptake was then measured in amino acid-free medium. IGF-I was more efficient than insulin at equimolar concentration (3.2 nmol/l) in stimulating protein synthesis (127 and 113% of basal, respectively) and inhibiting protein degradation (32% and 13% inhibition of protein degradation following 4 h incubation). Half maximal effective concentrations for stimulation of AIB uptake were 0.27 +/- 0.03 nmol/l and 34.8 +/- 3.1 nmol/l for IGF-I and insulin respectively, with maximal stimulation of about 340% of basal. Cycloheximide (3.6 mumol/l) diminished IGF-I-stimulated AIB uptake by 55%. Chicken growth hormone had no effect on basal AIB uptake in these cells and neither glucagon nor dexamethasone had an effect on basal or IGF-I-stimulated AIB uptake. This study demonstrates an anabolic effect for IGF-I in myotubes derived from primary chicken satellite cells which is mediated by the type I IGF receptor, since the cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate receptor does not bind IGF-II in chicken cells.

This is the first study of plasma biochemical parameters in free-living altricial birds during an entire developmental period in a nest, represented by European starling (Sturnus vulgaris). Dynamics of postnatal changes from hatching until close to fledging (days 1 to 15) were registered. Parameters of protein metabolism represented by total proteins, albumin and globulin concentrations increased continuously during the observed developmental period. There were two peaks in uric acid concentration on days 5 and 11. To the contrary, the creatinine content did not change throughout the observed period and increased only on day 15. Creatine kinase activity gradually increased until day 11 and then fell before fledging. Parameters of lipid metabolism (concentration of total lipids, triacylglycerols and nonesterified fatty acids) in plasma increased gradually reaching a plateau between days 8 and 11 and then declined on day 15. The cholesterol concentration pattern was similar to maximum value on day 11, then consecutively decreased. Concentration of glucose increased until day 8 and remained unchanged until fledging. Whereas calcium reached the highest concentration during days 8 and 11, phosphorus peaked earlier on day 5. The activity of alkaline phosphatase was similar to the pattern found in calcium concentration. Presented data showed an increase in both protein and lipid metabolism during the phase of rapid growth. A remarkable decrease in parameters of lipid metabolism before fledging may reflect increased physical activity and changes in nutrition.

To explore the effects of body fat percentage (BF%) on incidence of and mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to study the cardio-protective effect of physical activity in relation to BF%. A total of 26,942 men and women, aged 45-73 years, without history of CVD were followed up for incidence of coronary events (CE), ischaemic stroke, and CVD mortality over seven years in relation to sex-specific quartiles (Q1-Q4) of BF%. The cardio-protective effect of leisure-time physical activity was studied in relation to BF%. In men, the relative risk (RR) for CE and CVD mortality increased progressively with BF%. RR for CE in Q4 was 1.37 (95% confidence interval: 1.07-1.74), adjusted for age, height, smoking, high alcohol intake, and physical activity, compared with Q1. In women, BF% was significantly associated with incidence of CE and stroke. BF% was more strongly correlated to body mass index (BMI) (r = 0.83) and waist circumference (r = 0.76) in women than in men (r = 0.59 and r = 0.66, respectively). BF% was a stronger risk factor than BMI in women, and equally strong as waist circumference. A significant interaction (p = 0.013 for incidence of CE, p = 0.026 for ischaemic stroke) was found between BF% and sex. The raised cardiovascular risk was reduced by physical activity in subjects with high BF%. BF% is a risk factor for CE, ischaemic stroke, and CVD mortality. An interaction between BF% and sex suggests that BF% is a stronger CVD risk factor in women. The raised cardiovascular risk associated with high BF% is reduced by physical activity.
