Schema Theory: Explaining and Diminishing the Impact of Trauma on War-Affected Youth

In this paper I examine schema theory and meaning making and its role in processing trauma for war-affected youth. I will then argue that the analogical reasoning model put forward by Gick and Holyoak (1983) can be used as a theoretical framework to develop a therapeutic intervention to foster posttraumatic growth in war-affected youth.

Despite much empirical effort, and the development of the posttraumatic growth model, we still know little about the processes of growth from trauma and the conditions that enhance or inhibit the transformation. [Show full abstract] my predicament, my efforts to recover, the thoughts and feelings I experienced and the social context in which I developed posttraumatic growth. I discuss the shifts in my grief-saturated thinking as I responded with positive emotions to my surroundings and encountered model stories of growth. I illustrate the role of mythical thinking in the cognitive processing of trauma toward growth and conclude with clinical implications.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience characteristic social and communicative challenges while also representing a wide range of abilities. Such difficulty in processing and flexibly adapting to social information has long been considered a hallmark of ASD. This chapter considers this claim in the presence of evidence that, in fact, many individuals with ASD show normative or even exceptional creativity (including social creativity); that such abilities can act as a source of social connection for many children and adolescents; and that these capacities can be fostered, nurtured, and supported in those with ASD.
