Students experience many difficulties learning the fundamental relationships in Newtonian mechanics, partly due to preexisting mental models that originate from their everyday lives. These preconceptions often persist even after instruction in mechanics and lead to a supposed incompatibility between physics lessons in school and personal experiences. This article presents research that focuses on students’ concept knowledge and conceptual understanding in the field of Newtonian dynamics. Interventions are presented that discuss authentic experiments with friction using different software as a tool. Overall, the interventions lead to an increase in conceptual understanding with a large effect size. A hierarchical linear model (HLM) is used to identify factors that lead to a larger or smaller increase in conceptual understanding of the topic. With the HLM, we infer that the pretest score, the students’ interest in how physical properties interrelate (interest in “theoretical physics”), prior physics performance (in kinematics in this case, measured in the physics grade), and the (intrinsic and extraneous) cognitive load influence the post-test score. We discuss possible explanations as to why these factors influence students’ conceptual change. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Este artigo explora a complexa interseção entre o pensamento computacional, a criatividade e a produção textual no contexto do ensino fundamental II. O estudo aborda uma necessidade crítica na educação contemporânea de integrar habilidades técnicas com o desenvolvimento criativo e linguístico. A partir de uma revisão integrativa de literatura, este artigo destaca lacunas nas abordagens pedagógicas atuais, que frequentemente tratam esses domínios de forma isolada. Para preencher essa lacuna, o artigo propõe uma sequência didática adaptada do modelo de Foohs e Giraffa (2022), concebida para sinergizar esses elementos em um quadro educacional coeso. A sequência proposta incorpora a remidiação de textos autorais dos alunos em narrativas digitais interativas por meio do uso do Scratch, uma linguagem de programação visual. Ao fazer isso, busca-se aprimorar o pensamento computacional dos alunos, ao mesmo tempo em que se fomenta a criatividade e se melhora a capacidade de produzir textos coesos e coerentes. Essa abordagem envolve os alunos nos aspectos técnicos da construção de um algoritmo, e também aprofunda sua compreensão da estrutura narrativa e da expressão. A integração proposta visa formar aprendizes mais completos, equipados com habilidades técnicas e criativas necessárias para os desafios do século XXI.

This methodological article focuses on how to effectively map pre-service teachers’ use of discursive resources in professional identity production. By adopting a discourse analytical approach, this study views identity construction as a situational, real-time process occurring in interaction. The aim is to contribute knowledge about how to systematically map and analyze the resources that pre-service teachers use to construct their teacher identities during their education. Drawing on the framework of Mediated Discourse Analysis, this article presents a model that integrates two key concepts: discourse domains, which refer to the types of discourse commonly used in teacher education, and layers of discourse, which address societal levels in identity construction. The results suggest that using these concepts to map students’ use of discursive resources highlights how their knowledge of the teaching profession, their education and everyday experiences can be assets when constructing their teacher identities. While the model can be further refined and developed to better show the complexity of discursive resources in identity construction processes, it shows promise as a fruitful approach. By mapping and visualizing discursive resources through this model, this study offers valuable methodological insights into how to approach professional identity development among pre-service teachers.

Matematiksel etkinlikler üzerine yapılan araştırmalar, etkinliklerin seçiminde önemli bir rol oynayan öğretmenlerin, çeşitli olguları dikkate alarak etkinliklere titizlikle karar verdiklerini göstermektedir. Bu bağlamda gerçekleştirilen çalışmanın amacı, ortaokul matematik öğretmenlerinin, derslerinde kullanacakları etkinlikleri belirleme sürecinde, dijital materyallerin sahip olduğu özelliklerin, tercihlerini nasıl etkilediğini incelemektir. Araştırmada, yöntem olarak çoklu durum deseni kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın katılımcıları, etkinlik temelli öğretim gerçekleştirmeye özen gösteren üç ortaokul matematik öğretmenidir. Veri toplama sürecinde katılımcılar ile kendi okullarında altı hafta boyunca yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu süreçte katılımcılardan, aynı kazanıma yönelik olarak Geogebra ile hazırlanan ve farklı özelliklerin kullanımını gerektiren etkinlikler arasından, derslerinde kullanma isteğine göre sıralama yapmaları ve bu tercihlerini gerekçelendirmeleri istenmiştir. Araştırma sürecinde elde edilen veriler, tematik içerik analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular, katılımcıların etkinlik tercihlerinde dijital materyallerin etkisine ilişkin düşüncelerinin yedi tema altında toplandığını göstermektedir. Bu temalar; dijital materyallerin; öğrencinin odaklanmasına etkisi, öğrencinin hazırbulunuşluk düzeyiyle uyumu, zaman yönetimine katkısı, öğrenme çıktılarına ulaşmadaki rolü, öğretim ilkelerine uygunluk derecesi, kullanım kolaylığı veya zorluğu ve ilgi çekicilik düzeyidir. Araştırma sonuçları, dijital materyal özelliklerinin, öğretmenlerin etkinlik seçimlerinde oldukça önemli bir faktör olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bu kapsamda, içerik geliştiricilerine, dijital materyallerin öğretim ihtiyaçlarına uygunluğunu artırarak, öğretmenlerin etkinlik seçim süreçlerini desteklemeleri önerilmektedir.

Little attention has been paid to describing the ways early childhood education (ECE) teachers implement interactive strategies and the use of Spanish and English, in real time, to support Spanish–English emergent bilingual children’s contributions to shared book reading interactions. Video recordings from 19 ECE classrooms during shared book reading were used to conduct sequential analysis to examine the different types of interactive strategies (e.g., questions, extensions) implemented by bilingual ECE teachers and emergent bilinguals’ responses to these strategies. This study found that teachers’ interactive strategies may reflect a degree of reciprocity, with teachers and children sensitively attuned to one another’s contributions in real time. Teachers’ questions in English and Spanish were related to emergent bilinguals’ responses across a wide range of language complexity. Similarly, teachers and emergent bilinguals tended to respond to one another in the language of the prior utterance, suggesting teachers and emergent bilinguals are attuned to the contributions of one another. By examining teacher–child dynamics, this study produced results that can address issues that may have direct, translatable implications for ECE practice and intervention efforts.

This study aims to investigate the conditions for students’ self-evaluation and reflective practices when dealing with the learning of skills in a range of different settings in vocational education and training (VET), in the natural resource programme with simulated and authentic teaching practices and learning environments, for example digital driving simulation, as well as environments with authentic machines. The empirical basis of the study consists of extensive data generated during fieldwork in the form of interviews, field notes, and observations in simulator centres, authentic school environments and classrooms. The results show that simulation-based teaching and learning have created opportunities to develop practices that foster students’ evaluation and regulation of their learning, through the implementation of specific tools that focus on triggering students’ reflections on specific vocational skills and competence. The analysis also shows that feedback and reflective practices could be understood as an evaluation tool for task completion against specific set standards in pedagogical design. But also, as a practice of socialisation and transformation for the students, with the aim to provide them with the kinds of tools that may foster creativity and collaborative practices in the vocational training and their future profession.

Multimodal (inter)action analysis offers a powerful and robust methodology for the study of action and interaction between social actors, their environment, and the objects and tools within. Yet its implementation in the analysis of synchronous multimodal online data sets, e.g. (inter)actions via videoconferencing, is limited. Drawing on our research in understanding teacher-learner (inter)actions in instruction-giving fragments in synchronous multimodal online language lessons, we describe and illustrate the ways in which we adapted and extended some of the methodological and analytical tools. These include (1) the use of a grounded theory approach in delineating and identifying higher-level actions, (2) the embodiment and disembodiment of frozen actions, (3) electronic print mode, (4) semiotic lag, (5) semiotic (mis)alignment, (6) modal density (mis)alignment, and (7) how modal density can be achieved by brisk modal shifts in addition to through modal intensity and complexity. We conclude by a call for further educational research in online teaching platforms using the framework to have richer understandings of the (inter)actions between social actors with particular roles and identities (teachers-learners), their environment, and the objects and tools within, which bring their “own material properties, feel and techniques of use, affordances and limitations” (Chun, Dorothy, Richard Kern & Bryan Smith. 2016. This article was drawn from a description and analysis (Beck, McKeown, & Gromoll, 1987) of the content and presentation of the intermediate grade materials of four widely used elementary school social studies programs. The purpose of this work was to understand instructional issues beyond their surface features in order to develop hypotheses about social studies learning that could be tested in subsequent empirical work. The original work examined the range of topics covered in Grades 4 through 7 and provided in-depth analyses of topic sequences in geography for Grades 4 and 6 and in history for Grade 5. The focus of this article is the analysis of the geography sequence from Grade 4 and the history sequence from Grade 5.

This article deals with the problem of the formation of historical representation from the perspective of mediational means and mediated action. According to this approach, mental representations emerge as a result of individuals' actions performed with mediational means such as language. These mediational means are provided by the sociocultural setting in which individuals function. The article analyses the impact that recent profound political, economic, social and cultural changes which have taken place in Eastern Europe have had on the formation of historical representation. The sociocultural changes involved are illustrated by changes in the official account of important historical events as presented in high school textbooks. The historical representations of individuals are examined through an analysis of essays about World War II written by 21 undergraduate students in 1992. Several narrative elements were identified and analysed. The results indicate that the subjects' representations of World War II were rather poorly organized and that elements of the official history continue to prevail in them. A few narrative elements from what was unofficial history during the socialist period were incorporated into official history, but they were the exception and were not well integrated into the structure of the texts produced by the subjects. It is concluded that the representations of social phenomena such as historical events are formed with the use of mediational means available in a given sociocultural setting and that it may be quite difficult to restructure these mediational means when the sociocultural setting undergoes rapid change.

After a brief overview of the reasons for using “sociocultural,” as opposed to “cultural‐historical,” “sociohistorical,” or some other term, it is argued that an adequate account of the agenda for sociocultural research must be grounded in the notion of “mediated action.” Drawing on the writings of Vygotsky, Bakhtin, and others it is argued that mediated action must be understood as involving an irreducible tension between the mediational means provided by the sociocultural setting, on the one hand, and the unique, contextualized use of these means in carrying out particular concrete actions, on the other. In this view, any attempt to reduce the basic unit of analysis of mediated action to the mediational means or to the individual in isolation is misguided. It is suggested that by using mediated action as a unit of analysis the human sciences will be in a better position to address some of today's most pressing social issues.

Reading comprehension is conceptualized as a problem-solving activity in which the reader constructs meaning for the text while simultaneously reconstructing prior conceptions. Comprehension instruction is conceptualized as teaching students the thinking skills that foster interactions with the text. A specific instructional technique, reciprocal teaching, which is conducted as a group problemsolving activity in which the students practice the use of four strategies to promote thinking while reading, is described and illustrated.

The sociocultural research orientation promises to rebuild psychology into an interdisciplinary science. The central question addressed by this approach is that of relations between persons and their sociocultural activity contexts (individual-society antinomy). In this process, psychology's tendencies to 'methodological individualism' are contrasted with its opposite ('methodological collectivism'). The sociocultural orientation attempts to overcome the individual-society antinomy through an emphasis on cultural mediators, which empower persons to undertake novel actions and communicate about them.

Current research on learners' background knowledge has demonstrated how variations in the extent and quality of that knowledge affect learning. This paper focuses on the background knowledge that young learners bring to their study of history by characterizing students' knowledge of events leading to the American Revolution just before and a year after they study the topic in school. The characterization of student knowledge is based on patterns of responses to interviews and on the construction of semantic nets that illustrate patterns of individual students. Results suggest that knowledge of students both before and after instruction is characterized by simple associations and a lack of connected structures.

This article studies the post-Marxist transformation of the official representations of history in Estonia and the former GDR. The main focus is on school history and the main evidence consists of its syllabi, historico-educational articles and interviews. As history is considered to be vital in the formation of social identity, the representations of history tend to get manipulated by political leaders. The official representations have traditionally been ideologically framed 'grand narratives', the Marxist and nationalist histories being the most prominent narratives. In the GDR of the 1980s the authorities attempted a special combination of national and socialist identities. In Estonia around 1990 the socialist official representations were substituted by nationalist representations. The reception of the official representations of history was surveyed in East Germany in the mid-1980s. According to the results, the Marxist representations lacked street credibility and resulted in a double consciousness of history among young people. After the big change of 1989, according to another survey, unofficial nationalist representations were somewhat more relevant to the young Easterners than to the Westerners in Germany. In Estonia, towards the end of the 1980s, young people openly defied the official Marxist representations. A 1995 survey suggests that the new official nationalist 'grand narrative' had also been received by young people only in modest terms. On the whole, even if official representations of history are ubiquitous, the virtual street representations seem to be socially formed, through communication and on the basis of experience and everyday judgement.

Most laboratory studies on the nature of adult-child interactions have focused on the unidirectionality of influence from adult to child and have neglected to address the question of the child's influence on the adult. This study focuses on the importance of task situation definition in naturalistic settings where adults and children interact together, not in isolated dyads, and the children play a much more active role and contribute actively to the flow of discourse. Naturalistic data taken from one child's activities and discourse during an entire day in the home, at school, and in other social settings are presented and analyzed. These data provide evidence for the heterogeneity of speech events and for the use of cultural tools in order to change the authoritative structure of the discourse. An expanded interpretation of the sociocultural approach requires that authority and value should be assumed as essential properties of both intermental and in intramental functioning.
