Abstract— Vertical jumping is a crucial ability in the performance of several sports such as volleyball, basketball and football. The standing vertical jump is based on several specific independent variables, where each can affect or improve the final performance. The main goal of this study was to examine the kinematic vertical jump in amateurs sportsmen without pathological antecedents in lower limbs, through two types of squat jump. The movement was analyzed using two-dimensional video system and the data were processed with the use of software developed in the laboratory. The angles among segments, positions and displacements of the center of mass and anatomical joints velocities were evaluated, in each variant of the exercise. The results obtained allow the characterization of the standing vertical jump performed by the subject and allow the comparison of both techniques as well. It was demonstrated that this technique improves performance of the vertical jump while using arm swing which leads to an increase in height of the body's center of mass.

Prospective measures of competitive balance application to money lines in the national hockey league

The authors have previously introduced the concept of utilizing point spreads to measure competitive balance in professional sports and a methodology for doing so. They assessed competitive balance in the National Football League and the National Basketball Association. This methodology was extended to measuring competitive balance utilizing money lines in major league baseball. This study starts ... [Show full abstract] by applying the same model to the money lines for the 2005–2015 seasons to measure competitive balance in the National Hockey League. It then statistically adjusts the money lines under various scenarios to estimate the effects of overtime rules and shootouts on competitive balance. Similar analyses of overtime effects on competitive balance of other sports are also completed for comparison purposes. The results indicate that competitive balance in the National Hockey League increased rather substantially during this period and that overtime rules and shootouts have had a much larger positive impact on competitive balance in the NHL than overtime approaches have had on the competitive balance of any of the other sports examined.

Analysis of variance revealed that the type of sport (p = 0.001; í¼ í± = 0.647; moderate effect size) and competitive level(p = 0.001; í¼ í± = 0.355; small effect size)had significant statistical differences in the general network metrics. It was also found that football generates more connections between teammates but basketball and volleyball promote better results of density and clustering coefficient.

Increased aggression during human group contests when competitive ability is more similar

Theoretical analyses and empirical studies have revealed that conflict escalation is more likely when individuals are more similar in resource-holding potential (RHP). Conflicts can also occur between groups, but it is unknown whether conflicts also escalate more when groups are more similar in RHP. We tested this hypothesis in humans, using data from two professional sports competitions: ... [Show full abstract] football (the Bundesliga, the German first division of football) and basketball (the NBA, the North American National Basketball Association). We defined RHP based on the league ranks of the teams involved in the competition (i.e. their competitive ability) and measured conflict escalation by the number of fouls committed. We found that in both sports the number of fouls committed increased when the difference in RHP was smaller. Thus, we provide what is to our best knowledge the first evidence that, as in conflicts between individuals, conflicts escalate more when groups are more similar in RHP.

[Show full abstract] atmosphere and team performance, in addition to the effects of the quality of their own working relationship with the leader (LMX quality). The context of this study consisted of interdependent sports teams. The participants were 605 players belonging to 69 amateur sports teams playing various team sports such as soccer, hockey, and basketball. Social differential treatment was negatively associated with team atmosphere and unrelated to team performance. In addition, it was found that the two forms of task-related differential treatment included in this study were unrelated to team atmosphere and were differently associated with team performance. Owners incentives during the 2004-05 National Hockey League lockout

This study shows that firm owners can indirectly benefit from work stoppages if they own other firms in substitute industries and gain market power for those other firms. The incentives of the owners are examined with a model of cross-ownership cartels and data from professional sports. This study shows that the recent National Hockey League (NHL) lockout caused a statistically significant increase in attendance for the National Basketball Association and junior hockey leagues. Given that many NHL owners own teams in these substitutable leagues, this could be construed as anti-competitive behaviour and may have prolonged the NHL lockout and helped NHL owners in collective bargaining. Given the public investment in sports facilities and market power in professional sports, this analysis calls for cross-ownership across professional sports to be questioned.

Spirituality and basketball fanship: An interpretative phenomenological analysis and synthesis.

The world of competitive sport affords an individual the opportunity to enter a spiritual community adding meaning that transcends one’s current understanding of life (Parry et al., 2007). Previously established dimensions of sports fanship (group affiliation, psychological commitment and team identification) share characteristics commonly associated with religious or spiritual affiliation ... [Show full abstract] indicating that fans may generate substantial life meaning from observing sporting encounters. In the present study, 12 male basketball fans (M=32.42; SD=7.97) completed semi-structured interviews immediately prior to viewing a competitive match at the 2011 European Basketball Championships (Vilnius, Lithuania). Interviews were structured under four headings; 1) the most memorable moment as a basketball fan, 2) thoughts, feelings and emotions attached to their team, 3) affiliation to the team in the context of the fan’s meaning of life, 4) connection with members of the fan’s sporting community (opposition fans, fan’s of the same team and the team’s players). Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was employed to analyse interview transcripts. Raw data themes were clustered into six dimensions; 1) devotion, 2) transcendent feelings, 3) connectedness, 4) universal values, 5) appreciation of the game, and 6) personal meanings/values. The results indicate that sports fanship is characterised by, and synonymous with, an established understanding of spirituality derived from membership of wider spiritual and/or religious communities. The findings hold implications for the marketing and membership of local, amateur and professional sports clubs and brands, as well as community development, health and welfare.
