Flora and vegetation of Gávdos (Greece), the southernmost European island. I. Vascular flora and chorological relations

Authors:

Abstract

457 vascular plant species (+ 12 infraspecific taxa) are recorded from Gavdos, the southernmost European island, including 297 (+ 11) new records. Matricaria aurea is a new record for the Greek flora; Astragalus epiglottis, Erodium cicutarium subsp. bipinnatum, Lolium subulatum. Valerianella pumila and Vicia saliva subsp. amphicarpa represent new findings, or confirmations, to Kriti or the South Aegean. Bupleurum gaudianum is endemic to Gavdos. Within the Flora Europaea borders of Greece, the following are confined to Gavdos: Arfemisia herba-alba, Callitriche pulchra, Chlamydophora tridentafa and Reseda odorata. The occurrence of several taxa not collected on Gavdos since 1904 is confirmed and comments added for the chorologically significant ones. Gavdos is, phytogeographically, part of the Cardaegean region. There are also strong links to North African Cyrenaica.

... A pronounced Mediterranean climate prevails with a marked, dry 6-to-8-month summer (Bergmeier et al. 1997). Winter temperature is hardly ever below zero. ...
... The modern flora of Gavdos is discussed by Bergmeier et al. (1997), who give a floristic inventory, with brief remarks on the vegetation. Their study is of great value for comparison with the subfossil pollen record. ...
... The pine trees are younger than the junipers, suggesting a transitional phase in the succession. Bergmeier et al. (1997) report two-metre-high scrub of Pinus brutia, suggesting that the increase in pines was still taking place in the 1990s. A recent increase in Pinus brutia is mentioned for southwestern and southeastern Crete by Rackham and Moody (1996: p. 62). ...

The southernmost point of Europe, the little Greek island of Gavdos, south of Crete, has a pronounced Mediterranean climate. The present vegetation results from the edaphic fac¬ tors, as well as human occupation since the Late Neolithic. This vegetation is characterized by two juniper species, lendsc and, quite recently, turpentine pine. The climate excludes central European deciduous trees. In a pollen core from the lagoon of Trypiti, dated three millennia back, several representatives of the birch and oak family are found which must be attributed to long-distance transport. This evidence sheds new light upon the pollen record of Crete where the low percentages of such species have been explained as scarce occurrences in the island. The near absence of pine in Gavdos as deduced from low pollen values found for the last three thousand years contrast with the modern situation in which turpentine pine is abun¬ dant. At the §ame time pine has increased in the adjacent part of Crete. The recent increase in pine trees and/or in pine pollen in the Eastern Mediterranean is remarkable.
... Between its description in 1967 and 2015, a number of botanists recorded Callitriche pulchra on Gavdos (Bergmeier & al. 1997;Bergmeier 2001;Vogiatzakis & al. 2009;Lansdown 2009). However, none of these provided a thorough assessment of the conservation status of C. pulchra on the island, and the best available information suggested that it might be limited to around 30 pools (Vogiatzakis & al. 2009). ...

New information has extended the known range of Callitriche pulchra Schotsm. (Plantaginaceae) to Cyprus. This, combined with a survey of populations on the island of Gavdos off the S coast of Crete, shows that it is less threatened than previously thought. Updated information is presented here on the distribution, status and ecology of this species.
... In Greece it was previously known only from a few remote and isolated stations in the Aegean, viz. islets south of Astipalea, the easternmost end of Crete and the island of Gavdos (Stearn 1977, Tzanoudakis 1986, Bergmeier & al. 1997. Now Antikythera appears to be the northwestern limit of its distribution range. ...

The Kythera-Antikythera island chain is one of the most interesting areas of Greece, from a floristic and biogeographical point of view. It is considered as the remnant of an old landbridge which connected Western Crete with Southern Peloponnisos. The whole area is dominated by limestone cliffs, a biotope where many Greek and Aegean floristic elements find refuge. The island chain consists of 3 main, inhabited islands, Elafonissos, Kythera and Antikythera, and a number of small and uninhabited islets (Fig. 1). Elafonissos and Kythera are considered floristically well known (see Tzanoudakis & Panitsa 1994 for references), so we focused our efforts on the floristic exploration of the islets, which remained quite unexplored, and also to Antikythera which is the most remote and isolated among the larger ones. The latter is included in “Flora Kytherea” of Greuter and Rechinger (1967), but the floristic information are based on collections made by the authors and Prof. Phitos, during the same season (first half of May) of the same year (1964).
... March (Pennas, 1977). Mediterranean/north African origin, which on the island are at their European northern distributional limit ( Bergmeier et al., 1997). The vegetation in Gavdos is mainly dominated by pine, juniper and lentisk formations, in a unique cultural landscape of terraces, where wheat and barley are still grown (Rackham & Moody, 1996). ...

Report on plant associations, community types, composition and structure of coastal dunes with Juniperus spp. in Crete
... The actual flora of the area will presumably reach or exceed 500 species, additional collecting during late spring or early summer being desirable. As by current knowledge, the number of species in the area is compatible to that of the islands of Lipsos (Panitsa & Tzanoudakis 2001) and Gavdos (Bergmeier & al. 1997) and richer than that of Inousses (Panitsa & al. 1994), Chalki (Carlström 1987), Agios Evstratios (Snogerup & Snogerup 1991), and Kira Panagia (Snogerup & al. 1991). Megisti is definitely much more thoroughly botanized than Ro and Strongili: Stamatiadou and Greuter collected 555 voucher numbers from Megisti compared to 122 from Ro and 68 from Strongili, and the author spent only a few hours on Strongili, which did not permit extensive plant collecting. ...

The Kastellorizo island group, the south-easternmost part of Greece, supports a flora rich in Anatolian elements. Although that flora is relatively well known since 1973, some additional plant taxa are reported here, based on collections made between 1999 and 2012. Among them, Galium pseudocapitatum is a species new for the East Aegean Islands and the whole of Greece. The rare Galanthus peschmenii, previously known from Megisti, was also found on the Strongili island. Daucus conchitae is critically revised and, based on additional material, included in D. guttatus. In total, 64 records are new either for the whole island group or for one of its constituent islands.

The serpentine flora is often related with interesting biological phenomena and is therefore worthy of close inspection. Although serpentine outcrops do exist in Greece, detailed floristic work concentrated on them is still lacking. Aliki is a coastal serpentine area consisting mostly of low hills and a shallow lagoon that remained, up to now, floristically unexplored. It has a size of ca. 11 km 2 and its flora is composed of 326 plant taxa (pteridophytes and spermatophytes), some of them with taxonomic or phytogeographic interest. Precise data of all the collection localities in Aliki is given in detail. The taxonomic status of Bufonia euboica, previously only known from Evvia island, is reconsidered and the species is reduced to a variety: Bufonia stricta (Sm.) Gürke subsp. stricta var. euboica (Phitos & Kamari) Constantinidis comb. & stat. nov. Dwarf forms of Consolida hellespontica (Boiss.) Chater are taxonomically annotated. Notes on distribution are made for two species of Dianthus: D. haematocalyx Boiss. & Heldr. and D. serratifolius Sm. Trifolium sylvaticum Gérard is reported for the first time in Sterea Ellas and southern half of Greek mainland. The serpentine of Aliki, although of limited occurrence, is responsible for the creation or maintenance of local serpentine endemic taxa. It is concluded that even small serpentine outcrops in Greece may deserve careful searching and particular botanical attention.

Aegilops is a Mediterranean-Western Asiatic element, occurring around the Mediterranean Sea and in Western and Central Asia. Amblyopyrum is a Western Asiatic element of limited distribution, occurring only in Turkey and Armenia. A key is presented to the taxa of Aegilops, Amblyopyrum and the wild taxa of Triticum. The sectional arrangements in Aegilops are reviewed, as are the relations with other genera in the subtribe Triticinae. Lastly, an overview is presented of the taxa in the first and second gene pools of wheat with a summary of the accepted taxa in Triticum sensu stricto. A detailed botanical description of the species of Aegilops and Amblyopyrum is accompanied by a line drawing, dot-distribution maps, lists of literature and synonyms, and notes on taxonomic and nomenclatural problems, distribution, ecology, uses, and - when available - vernacular names. -from Author
