The Asian Biocontrol Market: Current Situation and Perspectives on Implementation of Sustainable Agriculture

An overview on the Asian biocontrol market is presented, which reflects the experiences and perspectives that evolved since 2002 during the course of two projects supported by German Development Cooperation and ASEAN Member States: The former 'Commercialization of Biopesticides in Southeast Asia' and the still ongoing 'ASEAN Sustainable Agrifood Systems (SAS)'. In 2012, SAS started developing the ASEAN Biocontrol Database, which contains annotated information on registered biocontrol agents (BCA) in that region. Large parts of this analysis rest on this. Information on other Asian countries was gathered through publicly available resources, business reports, and communication with business representatives.

Production of Entomopathogenic Nematodes

Entomopathogenic nematodes (Steinernema spp. and Heterorhabditis spp.) and the slug-killing nematode Phasmarhabditis hermaphodita have advanced from niche products to key biopesticides within the past 30. years. [Show full abstract] produced in liquid culture. The different production methods are described in detail, and principles of formulation and quality assurance for nematodes are given. While at large scale, liquid culture production is clearly most cost-efficient, solid-state production and in vivo production play an important role in specific market segments, in countries with low labor costs and as local production methods for grower cooperatives. The coexistence of different production methods is partly due to the liberal legislation of these biocontrol agents and is considered to be important to explore the full innovative potential of entomopathogenic nematodes since large-scale producers tend to concentrate their production on just a few generically used nematode species.

Biostimulation and bioconcontrol of Trichoderma harzianum 6776 on tomato

Many Trichoderma isolates have been effectively used as biocontrol agents for a wide range of economically important plant pathogens. Besides protecting plants through antagonism, species of Trichoderma can induce resistance by colonizing, as endophytes, the root epidermis and outer cortical cells of their hosts and can also have a biostimulating effect on plant growth. [Show full abstract] is considered a new potential beneficial isolate to be employed as active ingredient in new biofertilizers and/or biopesticides as well as in new “tailor made substrates”. Preliminary biocontrol experiments showed that T. harzianum 6776 was able to reduce plant mortality due to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici and Rhizoctonia solani and gave promising results against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici. The ability to significantly stimulate industrial tomato plant development was assessed by several experiments performed under greenhouse conditions according to standard procedures for the production of plantlets for transplanting. The biostimulating effects, expressed as higher stem height and diameter, increased fresh and dry weight compared with controls were further evaluated on different tomato cultivars, included MicroTom which is considered a model cultivar, and on tomato rootstocks, showing interesting results. T. harzianum 6776 biomass was obtained by fermentation of organic matter derived from the food industry and was then added to the peat- based tomato growth substrate at the final concentration of 10%. Since quality and quantity of fungal inoculum is a key factor on performance of beneficial fungi, different fermentation substrates were tested in order to improve the activity of T. harzianum 6776.

[Show full abstract] chemicals cause to the environment and to human and animal health, new strategies are being developed to replace or reduce the use of fungal- and pest-killing compounds in agriculture. In this context, chitinolytic microorganisms are likely to play an important role as biocontrol agents and pathogen antagonists and may also function in the control of postharvest rot. In this review, we discuss the literature concerning chitin and the basic knowledge of chitin-degrading enzymes, and also describe the biocontrol effects of chitinolytic microorganisms and their potential use as more sustainable pesticides and fungicides in the field.
