Self-care and Well-being in Mental Health Professionals: The Mediating Effects of Self-awareness and Mindfulness

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

Because mental health professionals are susceptible to impairment and burnout that may negatively affect clinical work, it is ethically imperative that they engage in self-care. Previous research has found direct effects of self-care on self-awareness and well-being (e.g., Coster & Schwebel, 1997). Likewise, mindfulness has been found to positively affect well-being (Brown & Ryan, 2003). However, no studies currently available demonstrate a link between self-awareness and well-being. Mindfulness may be the link needed to support this association. A survey of mental health professionals (N = 148) revealed that mindfulness is a significant mediator between self-care and well-being. Consequently, mental health professionals are encouraged to explore their involvement in and beliefs about self-care practices.

... In this study, participants described VAT sensations as "moving all over", "grooving", and "like having a massage", evoking warmth and calm. Responses such as "I cannot feel any stress in my head anymore" and "It feels clear now" reflect increased self-awareness and a connection to the present moment, key aspects of mindfulness [73]. Although the children did not intentionally practice mindfulness, VAT fostered similar outcomes by redirecting their attention to bodily sensations, helping reduce distress and enhance emotion regulation. ...

Background: Autistic children often face challenges with attention and emotion regulation, which can impact their socio-communication skills and overall well-being. Vibroacoustic therapy (VAT), a sensory-based intervention using low-frequency sound vibrations, may offer a novel approach to address these challenges. The objective of this pilot study is to explore the feasibility and potential efficacy of VAT in improving attention and emotion regulation in autistic children aged 9–12 years. Methods: Eighteen children were recruited with assistance from the school psychologist, using purposive sampling to identify participants with autism spectrum disorder and attentional challenges. The study was conducted at a primary school in Pretoria, South Africa, in March 2023. Participants were divided into treatment (n = 9) and control (n = 9) groups. The treatment group underwent 10 VAT sessions over six weeks. Attention was assessed using the NEPSY-II and Joint-Attention Test (JTAT), focusing on sustained, selective, alternating, and joint attention. Qualitative data were collected through observations and creative semi-structured interviews to understand the children’s experiences of VAT. Tests were conducted at baseline, midway, post-intervention, and one week post-intervention. Statistical analysis was conducted using a Generalised Linear Mixed Model (GLMM) in R version 4.3.1, with significance assessed using a Likelihood Ratio Test (p < 0.05) to assess attention improvements. Results: Quantitative analysis revealed significant improvements in joint attention in the treatment group (X² = 11.64, df = 3, p = 0.008). Qualitative findings highlighted positive experiences related to emotion regulation, with children reporting a sense of calm and enjoyment during VAT sessions. Teachers also noted improvements in attention and engagement. Conclusions: VAT appears to be a feasible and acceptable intervention for autistic children, with potential benefits for attention and emotion regulation. These findings support further research to validate its efficacy and explore its adaptability for diverse sensory profiles. VAT may hold promise as a holistic therapeutic tool in autism intervention programmes.
... However, most of the research on preventing or mitigating burnout in health professionals, including in psychology trainees, focuses on the importance of selfcare skills and cultivating individual resilience (e.g., Zahniser et al., 2017). Health care trainees are encouraged to cultivate selfawareness (Richards et al., 2010), to practice mindfulness (Spinelli et al., 2019), to employ skills from acceptance and commitment therapy (Pakenham, 2017), and to follow healthy lifestyles (Wise et al., 2012) including getting enough sleep, enjoying social support, and using emotion regulation strategies. Such practices can be quite helpful, and being "good" at self-care can mitigate the stress associated with graduate training (Colman et al., 2016;Myers et al., 2012). ...

Clinical psychology trainees have been struggling with significant burnout, anxiety, and depressive symptoms since well before the COVID-19 pandemic, but the problem has escalated in recent years. This study reports on a broad survey of trainees in clinical psychology doctoral programs across the United States and Canada (N = 984; M = 27.5 years, SD = 3.39). We found that trainees feel enormous time pressure despite working long hours (50–60 hr a week) and are suffering from high rates of burnout, especially emotional exhaustion. Most students do not feel they have adequate time for self-care and report that faculty in their programs talk about the importance of work–life balance but do not actually prioritize it. These problems are even more acute for trainees who identify as non-White. Self-care is often framed as an individual competency that trainees are responsible for learning and achieving on their own. However, the demands on trainees may make self-care almost impossible. These are institutional and field-specific problems that require systemic solutions. As a field, we must generate ways of reducing the burdens on all trainees, enhancing their well-being, and ensuring the future of our workforce.
... Although the SOS does not have clinical categories, we nonetheless compared mean results (M = 4.70, SD = 1.11) to other samples. 2 This was somewhat lower than American undergraduates, M 1 = 5.73; M 2 = 5.53 [64], or mental health professionals, M = 5.28 [65], but comparable to counseling center clients, M 1 = 4.9, M 2 = 4.47 [64], and higher than people with severe psychiatric disorders, M = 3.9 [62]. We interpret such comparisons with caution, but results suggest CSAM investigators may score somewhat lower than typical samples and more in line with troubled people. ...

Police officers and staff who investigate child sexual abuse material (CSAM) may be at elevated risk for mental health problems, which may be mitigated or exacerbated by institutional and interpersonal factors. The current work examined mental health in a large sample of UK CSAM investigators (N = 661). Results suggest substantially elevated rates of depression and anxiety but not posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Feeling successful and supported powerfully buffered against negative outcomes, whereas moral injury—particularly feelings of institutional betrayal—predicted worse outcomes. Although exposure to CSAM and contact with victims predicted worse outcomes, these effects were much smaller. Regarding coping styles, self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing, withdrawal, ignoring, and negative religious coping predicted worse outcomes, whereas positive refocusing, seeking distraction, and social support were effective. These results held controlling for demographics. These results suggest that UK CSAM police officers and staff experience elevated depression and anxiety, but institutional and interpersonal support can buffer outcomes.

Across two studies, this exploratory research examines stigma faced by larger‐bodied people by exploring the phenomenon of weight‐based mistreatment (WBM), defined as interpersonal disrespect levied on a person explicitly due to their larger body size, at work. Through qualitative research we first describe distinct forms of WBM experienced by 175 self‐defined overweight US employees, as well as consequences of WBM for bullied targets and their organizations. Next, through a quantitative survey distributed to a separate sample of larger‐bodied workers, our exploratory evaluation of WBM found that it is all‐too common in many forms, including overt and covert aggression, microaggression, incivility, and benevolent, yet disrespectful comments oriented around a person's weight. One or more forms of these behaviours were experienced by 75% of our 1008‐person sample, with overt and covert aggression being most common, and coworkers most often perpetrating WBM. Drawing on objectification theory, we observe a host of harmful consequences ranging from diminished engagement, worsened professional interactions, and a lack of self‐care. Altogether, results reveal WBM is a substantial problem, and thus they serve as a call to action for HR professionals, managers, and inclusion advocates to better understand the experiences of this vulnerable population.

In this article, we attempt to distinguish between the properties of moderator and mediator variables at a number of levels. First, we seek to make theorists and researchers aware of the importance of not using the terms moderator and mediator interchangeably by carefully elaborating, both conceptually and strategically, the many ways in which moderators and mediators differ. We then go beyond this largely pedagogical function and delineate the conceptual and strategic implications of making use of such distinctions with regard to a wide range of phenomena, including control and stress, attitudes, and personality traits. We also provide a specific compendium of analytic procedures appropriate for making the most effective use of the moderator and mediator distinction, both separately and in terms of a broader causal system that includes both moderators and mediators. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of spirituality to work and family roles and life satisfaction among gifted adults. Satisfaction with work and family roles was examined in combination with spiritual well-being in order to study the contribution each makes to variance in life satisfaction. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed in order to gain a greater depth of understanding of these complex issues. Results from multiple regression analyses indicated that existential well-being and marital satisfaction contributed significantly to life satisfaction. In response to open-ended questions, participants articulated many ways in which their spirituality impacted their work, marriage, parenting, and life satisfaction. Results are discussed in relation to the literature. Implications for mental health counseling and future research are provided.

The Buddhist practice of mindfulness is being used more often both to help clients and to facilitate counselor effectiveness. A growing body of research supports these uses of mindfulness. Most authors also emphasize that those who teach mindfulness must also apply it themselves. However, little is known about how counselors and counselor educators incorporate mindfulness into their personal and professional lives. The current study used semistructured interviews to elicit such information from 6 counselors and counselor educators. A constant comparative method was used to analyze the data and synthesize themes. Emergent themes included practices used to cultivate mindfulness and the results of mindfulness practices.
