Lives lived in milliseconds: Using cognitive methods in personality research

This chapter discusses the use of cognitive methods in personality research. It is suggested that cognitive measures of personality are less reliable than self-report measures of personality. This apparent fact can be attributed to at least two important sources. Cognitive measures are very much dependent on momentary states of mind. Such factors may be less important to trait self-report ... [Show full abstract] measures, which do not rely on state-related sources of information to the same extent. In addition, the reliability and stability of traits derive in part from the fact that people develop very stable beliefs about themselves. These beliefs, however, may provide a misleading picture of how much people's lives and personalities are actually changing. The upshot of these two considerations leads to the suggestion that cognitive processing measures cannot, and should not, be as stable as self-reports of personality. Nevertheless, it is important to pay somewhat constant attention to the reliability of cognitive processing measures, as such measures may or may not in fact tap reliable and stable individual differences. The 'nibelungenlied' in the intermediary area between orality and literacy

The paper argues against an understanding of the 'Nibelungenlied' as 'Buchepos', including HEUSLER'S explanation of its origin in the context of a tradition of 'Buchepen', and instead proposes the concept of memory text. It proposes that the linguistic and metrical-stanzaic form, the emphasis on visual and spatial representation as well as the lively representation of the affects of characters ... [Show full abstract] can be explained as mnemonic devices. Unintended variants, incongruencies, fissures and other instances of unevenness in the text indicate the production of the text in the mind and from memory. The concept of 'fictive (simulated) orality' is to be rejected as an ad-hoc hypothesis. Kurzfassung: Der Aufsatz richtet sich gegen das seit ANDREAS HEUSLER vorherrschende Verständnis des 'Nibelungenliedes' als Buchepos und stellt den Begriff des Gedächtnistextes dagegen. Auch Heuslers Herleitung aus buchepischer Tradition wird bestritten. Die sprachliche und metrisch-strophische Form, forcierte Bildlichkeit, ausgeprägte Raumdarstellung sowie anschaulich ausgestellte Affekte von Figuren lassen sich als mnemonische Technik erklären. Unwillkürlich entstandene Varianten, Unstimmigkeiten, Risse und andere Fehlstellen lassen auf eine Herstellung im und aus dem Gedächtnis schließen. Das Konzept der fingierten Mündlichkeit ist als Ad-hoc-Hypothese zurückzuweisen. Der Argumentationsgang wird in folgenden Schritten entwickelt: 1. Gedächtnistext statt Buchepos 2. Unwillkürliche, durch Gedächtnislücken bedingte Varianz – die 23. Aventiure in C als Beispiel 3. Mischformen von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit und das frühe Potenzial der Schrift 4.
