... Islam and Habiba (2015) stated that libraries must take advantage of Web 2.0 applications and market their services regularly through the Internet, connect with their users and promote services. The main reason for library users to connect with the library's social media pages is because users want to get instant feedback from the library when they have library services queries (Phillips 2015). According to Khan and Rafiq (2019), the availability of libraries on social media platforms plays a role in engaging, supporting and guiding library users, even outside the physical libraries. ...
... There is still little knowledge about social media content and user engagement in public libraries, and research still needs to be conducted in helping public librarians realise the effectiveness of marketing through social media (Joo et al. 2018). In addition, Phillips (2015) agreed that extant research on the use of social media for library marketing has been conducted in the context of academic libraries, where aims and users are different from those of the public libraries; hence, this article aimed to reveal how social media is used by City of Cape Town Libraries. ...

Background: Social media use by libraries has facilitated communication and marketing of services to user communities. The City of Cape Town Libraries adopted social media usage in the 2015–2016 financial year. This study is set out to assess librarians’ perception and response to the implementation and adoption of social media for library services. Objectives: The research sought to appraise the City of Cape Town public librarians’ experiences of social media use in the provision of information services, evaluate librarians’ perceptions of social media use for information provision services and recommend ways in which social media information services provision can be improved upon. Method: A quantitative research method and a descriptive survey research design approach was adopted for the study, and a web-based questionnaire was used for data collection. The study was anchored on the technological acceptance model, and employed total enumeration sampling to collect data from the 102 City of Cape Town librarians-in-charge. Results: City of Cape Town librarians have positive perception and acceptance towards the use of social media to perform library-related duties. Librarians utilised social media in engaging with library users, including marketing of library services, and promotion of library events. Experiences including lack of guidance in dealing with copyright issues and organisational policy favouring a single social media platform were reported. Conclusion: Library services through is vastly positive but expansion across multiple social media platforms is necessary to encourage further engagement with users. A third construct: preference of choice is proposed for the TAM model.

Virtual reference services in the library needs to be more utilized during the pandemic era as library users had to go online. This research study determined the influence of library marketing strategies to the library users’ utilization of virtual reference service. The concurrent nested mixed method of research was used. Participants of the study were the 206 students at a state university in the province of Bukidnon during the school year, 2021-2022. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used to organize the data of the study. Findings reveal that the participants assessed as high all the library marketing strategies high, and it was also found out the utilization of library virtual reference services was rated to a high extent. Moreover, the combination of library marketing strategies significantly influenced the variability in the utilization of library virtual reference service. The study concludes that through social media, the library can encourage library users to avail of its varied information sources. Marketing strategies significantly influence the library users’ utilization. This confirms the theory of confirmation expectancy which suggests that perceptions are influenced by pre-use expectations (marketing strategies) and consequently directly impact confirmation (utilization of the library virtual services). Based from the findings, the university library may consider other forms of social media such as Google hangouts, Twitter, and YouTube to enhance its virtual services and to attract more patrons to use its services.

Academic libraries are increasingly becoming affected by intrusive and disruptive technologies, changing user needs and alternative information providers who offer similar services as the library. The dilemma of academic libraries is evident, based on the declining support from parent institution and decreasing patronage. In the face of stiff competition, their response has to be rapid in order to preserve their position. Academic librarians cannot effectively prepare for the future or position themselves until they understand the nature of their competitors and what draws the customers to them. To remain relevant, librarians must re-strategize their marketing techniques using competitive intelligence (CI). The paper explores practical application of CI principles and strategies to the marketing mix variables of academic libraries. It identifies competitive strategies that could give library marketing a competitive edge. This study examined online communications within library and information science (LIS)-related subreddits through the perspectives of social identity theory and social media engagement. A total of 17,049 Reddit posts from three major LIS-related subreddits were harvested through Pushshift by Python. Manual and computational coding methods were used to identify linguistic characteristics of the posts as well as the topicality of the content. Multiple logistic regressions were used to analyze the relationship between psychological and emotional characteristics of the posts and user engagement. Results showed that the majority of posts did not mention a specific type of LIS organization; of the subset that did, public libraries and academic libraries were most frequently referenced. “Library services and usage” was the topic most mentioned within LIS-related subreddits, followed by “librarians and jobs.” Various psychological features of posts including emotional tone score, authentic score, clout score, analytic score, and usage of words related to affective processes, anxiety, social processes, causation, and time were significantly related to user engagement. This study contributes to further understanding of social identity theory and social media engagement within the online communication context of LIS community. Key topics and issues in the LIS field and practical suggestions for strategies to improve social media engagement across LIS community were discussed.

This article explores the concept of a library through social media platforms, resulting in forming a community that offers support, knowledge exchange, research, and networking opportunities. Articles review was taken between the publication year 2006 until 2021. Libraries can also utilize social media to share specific resources and collections and educate and market what is available. Creating content is one of the virtues for libraries to create awareness among their users and followers on social media platforms. Past researchers of the study are discussed exponentially to provide a holistic view on this matter. Challenges faced by the libraries in using social media platforms are also mentioned in this paper.
Chapter
This chapter will explore how social media assessment is used for library marketing. It will build upon existing literature on how other libraries quantify social media impact in promoting their services. This includes methods on how libraries can gather native application statistics from popular platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. An exploration into web analytics will also be explored as evidence of social media impact. The chapter will use case-studies of the Ursula C. Schwerin Library of the New York City College of Technology (City Tech), CUNY, and how social media platforms are used to advertise library events and disseminate news.

Social media is never again an immaterial wonder; tools like Facebook, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, or YouTube have taken the world in a tempest. Social media has turned into a standard, changed individual connections, enabled people to add to number of issues, and produced new potential outcomes and difficulties to encourage joint effort. Associations have dire need of not just concentrating on advancement of new items and administrations, yet additionally giving explicit consideration to viable learning sharing, which is of indispensable significance for their success. The potential favourable position of grasping and executing web-based social networking is tremendous. Despite the fact that the enthusiasm for internet-based life is expanding, from one perspective information specialists and administrators are hanging tight to get engaged with this synergistic world, since they may not feel motivated or may not know about the benefits of utilizing these devices for work purposes.

Purpose This study aims to analyze the engagement of community members in an English as a second language (ESL) live broadcast. A platform for encouraging language and culture learning in ESL was planned and implemented. Research purposes were to explore the following aspects for engaging students’ participation: operation-monitoring, planning and implementation, incentives and motives, interactions with multiple formats and challenges. Design/methodology/approach The platform used for the ESL live broadcast was Open Broadcaster Software Studio. Through the live videos and instant messages delivered by the network, real-time interactions from different virtual sites were achieved. Observations and operation documentation were recorded. Interviews with the teacher, the library administrator and the students were carried out for collecting data. Inductive analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data from the different sources. Findings It was observed that the ESL broadcast reached a great number of users weekly. To engage the ESL broadcast community, efforts to monitor and plan for implementation were made. Students were encouraged by both external incentives and internal motivation. Managing the connectivity problems was essential for guaranteeing the quality of the real-time interactions. From their experiences, the participants were positive about the broadcast approach to learning ESL. More diverse topics and alternatives for oral interactions in the class are suggested in future implementations. Research limitations/implications The implementation of the ESL live broadcast provides a model for inviting members within the university community to engage in the language and culture learning. The research is preliminary and is limited to a specific university. Future research on diverse learning settings is needed. Originality/value The findings of this study will contribute to the research in streaming media interactions. The case might be applied to other settings and other subject domains.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore topics of Facebook posts created by public libraries using the bi-term topic model, and examine the relationships between types of topics and user engagement. The authors further investigated the effects of three library factors, namely, staff size, budget and urbanization degrees, on Facebook content and user engagement based on multilevel generalized linear modeling. Design/methodology/approach This study suggested a novel method, a combination of the bi-term topic modeling and MGLM, to enhance the understanding of social media in the context of public libraries. Findings The findings revealed that posts related to community events, awards and photos were likely to receive more likes and shares, whereas posts about summer reading programs received relatively more comments. In addition, the authors found that a larger staff size and the inclusion of multimedia had positive impacts on user engagement. Originality/value This study analyzed the content of public library-generated social media based on text mining. Then, the authors examined the effects of contextual library-level factors on social media practice in public libraries. Based on empirical findings, the study suggested a range of practical implications for effective use of social media in public libraries.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to update Carlsson (2015), which examined the research on public libraries and the social web published from 2006 to 2012, and it also intends to go beyond Carlsson (2015) by including six additional variables. Design/methodology/approach Literature searches were performed against Web of Science Core Collection and EBSCOhost databases. By adapting Carlsson’s (2015) three level key phrase searches, which were then complemented by chain searching, a total of 60 articles were identified and analyzed. Findings In comparison to Carlsson (2015), this study shows that the recent research, published between 2012 and 2018, leans toward a more general acceptance of the social web’s usage to improve the services provided by public libraries; that the public library is rarely premised to be in a state of crisis; and that the social web is mostly perceived as having a complementary relationship with librarianship and library services. The findings from analyzing the six additional variables are also presented. Research limitations/implications The findings from this study provide LIS professionals a greater understanding of where the research stands on the topic at present, and this study also identifies gaps in the literature to offer insight into the areas where future research can be directed. Originality/value Given the continued popularity of social web usage among public libraries, this study examines the literature published on the social web in the public library context between 2012 and 2018 and offers implications and future research suggestions.

The application of live broadcasting has caught attention in a wide variety of learning contexts in recent years. In higher education, university plays a very important role in teaching enhancement. Live broadcast media provide a platform for the library to establish an English self-learning social community and to encourage communication among the group members. Through the live video and instant messages delivered by the network, the library can adapt various strategies for presenting the content in different forms (live videos, graphics, texts, video, and links). In this study, the integration of live broadcasting in English as a second language (ESL) learning is implemented in a library. Together with the implementation, reactions from the librarian, the teacher, the students, and library support staff were gathered. From their reactions, the participants were positive about the broadcast approach to learning ESL. However, challenges exist for keeping all students committed to attending the class. More interesting topics and the use of interactive activities in the class are suggested in future implementations.

This article provides a general review of the literature on the nature and role of empathy in social interaction for information professionals working in a variety of information and knowledge environments. Relational agency theory (Edwards, 2005) is used as a framework to re-conceptualize education for empathic social interaction between information professionals and their clients. Past, present and future issues relevant to empathic interaction in information and knowledge management are discussed in the context of three shifts identified from the literature: (a) the continued increase incommunication channels, both physical and virtual, for reference, information and research services, (b) the transition from the information age to the conceptual age and (c) the growing need for understanding of the affective paradigm in the information and knowledge professions. Findings from the literature review on the relationships between empathy and information behavior, social networking, knowledge management and information and knowledge services are presented. Findings are discussed in relation to the development of guidelines for the affective education and training of information and knowledge professionals and the potential use of virtual learning software such as Second Life in developing empathic communication skills.

This paper examines how Nigerian Libraries can leverage on social networking and social media skills to provide dynamic library services in the face of dwindling economic problems in Nigeria. The unprecedented technological advancement of the 21st century, no doubt has impacted on library services globally and in Nigeria in particular. The social media hype has gradually crept into the library profession- with social sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube, Library Thing, Ning; it has become evident that our services will need to change to meet the growing needs of our end users. Libraries in Nigeria have been challenged like never before to render more proactive and more value added services to meet the ever changing needs of our patrons. This paper is therefore, an attempt to examine the present scenario in library services delivery with these new and emerging technologies. Challenges faced by Nigerian libraries in the use of these social media are investigated and possible solutions proffered.

I s Instagram worth the additional effort from a library to support another social network? Possibly. At UCLA Powell Library, we have had more success connecting with our students and engaging in teaching and learning on Instagram than on any other social network we use. Instagram makes sense for our library because it reaches a young, urban, and diverse demographic—one that reflects our undergraduate population. Our library maintains a presence on four social networks—Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram—but we prize Instagram for being the place where we have the most rewarding interactions at the moment. Our Instagram followers tend to be highly engaged and attentive to our content. While there is no chance of truly " moving on " from Facebook (Facebook purchased Instagram last year for a much-publicized $1 billion), Instagram has breathed new life into our social media activities. What is Instagram? Instagram is a mobile app (iOS and Android) that enables users to instantly turn their mobile snapshots into visually appealing images, which are then shared with others on the network. The images can be shared on other social networks, as well, including Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Flickr, and Foursquare. Instagram launched in October 2010, was purchased by Facebook in April 2012, and currently has approximately 130 million monthly active users. 1 On June 20, 2013, Instagram added the capability to post short videos, a response to the growing popularity of Vine, a six-second video app owned by Twitter. Instagram is dedicated to the mobile experience , and part of its growth was fueled by the rapid adoption of smartphones with high-functioning cameras. Although it now provides a Web site where users can view posts, images still can't be posted from a Web interface without a workaround.

While the burgeoning trend in online social networks has gained much attention from the media, few studies in library science have yet to address the topic in depth. This article reports on a survey of 126 academic librarians concerning their perspectives toward Facebook.com, an online network for students. Findings suggest that librarians are overwhelmingly aware of the "Facebook phenomenon." Those who are most enthusiastic about the potential of online social networking suggested ideas for using Facebook to promote library services and events. Few individuals reported problems or distractions as a result of patrons accessing Facebook in the library. When problems have arisen, strict regulation of access to the site seems unfavorable. While some librarians were excited about the possibilities of Facebook, the majority surveyed appeared to consider Facebook outside the purview of professional librarianship.

Thematic analysis is a poorly demarcated, rarely acknowledged, yet widely used qualitative analytic method within psychology. In this paper, we argue that it offers an accessible and theoretically flexible approach to analysing qualitative data. We outline what thematic analysis is, locating it in relation to other qualitative analytic methods that search for themes or patterns, and in relation to different epistemological and ontological positions. We then provide clear guidelines to those wanting to start thematic analysis, or conduct it in a more deliberate and rigorous way, and consider potential pitfalls in conducting thematic analysis. Finally, we outline the disadvantages and advantages of thematic analysis. We conclude by advocating thematic analysis as a useful and flexible method for qualitative research in and beyond psychology.

Public libraries are increasingly using social media in an attempt to meet users in their own spaces. Social media can be useful when used to create a participatory library service emphasising engagement with users. However, there has been little empirical investigation into the success of social media use by public libraries. This article reports on the findings of a research project that explored the use of social media by Australian public libraries. Two organisations participated in case studies that involved interviews, document analysis, and social media observation. To contextualise the use of social media in the case study organisations, a sub-study was undertaken involving observation of an additional 24 public libraries across Australia. This article focuses on the findings from the observation sub-study. It presents and applies a methodology for classifying social media content to determine whether the sample libraries’ social media use is indicative of a participatory approach to service delivery. This article explores how a range of social media platforms are used by the sample libraries and considers what best practice in participatory library service looks like. The two case study organisations’ use of social media is highlighted as exemplary practice.

Web 2.0 first created a scramble among librarians to participate in Facebook, YouTube, blogs, and other social media applications, and the turn is now towards management and consolidation. Managing Social Media in Libraries explores the developing information environment, the collaboration among library organizations, and the ways social media may convert the loose connections between library staff members. The book takes librarians beyond the mechanics of using social media, and establishes a framework to move library managers and leaders toward making social media effective. Managing Social Media in Libraries is structured around key topics in this area, including: refocusing after the first use of Web 2.0; library organisations as loosely coupled systems; social media within such systems; defining a purpose for the use of social media; connecting messages and tools; and integrating social media into standard websites.

Ideals and visions of a Library 2.0 have in recent years been widely discussed in public library research and practice. Influenced by the Web 2.0 discourse, the Library 2.0 rhetoric has to a large extent been coloured by utopian and revolutionary overtones, identifying social media as key to transforming the public library institution. While previous research has primarily addressed this development conceptually, this paper explores how the visions of Library 2.0 are put to work in everyday practices. Drawing on ethnographic data, this paper critically examines the micro-level interplay between the social networking site Facebook and librarianship in the setting of a Swedish public library. The study reveals that the labour required to realize the visions of Library 2.0 is characterized by a constant flux between self-determination and precarity (i.e. existence without predictability or security). While the librarians participating in the study creatively construct new routines and strategies for doing work, they are always at the beck and call of Facebook and have only marginal opportunities of influencing the technology they use. Still, this everyday and situated use gives them a possibility of interpreting the purpose of Facebook differently. The paper suggests that by articulating such alternative understandings of technology more clearly public libraries could reject a position of being merely victims of technological change and make a difference in ICT-development.

This is an exploratory study investigating the use of social networking tools in academic libraries, examining the extent of their use, library staff's perceptions of their usefulness and challenges, and factors influencing decisions to use or not to use such tools. Invitations to participate in a web-based survey were sent to 140 university libraries from Asia, North America and Europe. Responses were received from 38 libraries (response rate: 27.1%). Twenty-seven libraries (71.1%) used social networking tools, five (13.1%) were potential users and six (15.8%) did not plan to use them at all. Facebook and Twitter were the most commonly adopted tools in university libraries. Most library staff had positive perceptions on the usefulness of social networking tools, but hesitancy among library staff and limited participation of users (i.e. students) were perceived to be hindrances. This study offers insights for academic librarians to make informed decisions in applying social networking tools.

Against the historical background of institutionalised pastoral care in schools, the results are reported of a questionnaire survey of 159 members of the National Association for Pastoral Care in Education (NAPCE) with regard to the impact of post-1988 changes on pastoral care and personal and social education (PSE). Five hypotheses are generated concerning the likely effects of the 1988 Education Reform Act, the National Curriculum and associated developments in educational policy and management. The data reveal that, for the sample surveyed, the importance, time and resources given to pastoral care and PSE are considered not to have declined in the way predicted. Respondents were also more positive than expected about the impact of a range of related changes, including school-centred initial teacher training, teacher mentoring, the introduction of statutory training days, National Curriculum cross-curricular elements, and SCAA and OFSTED guidance. However, there were some developments which were considered to have had a negative effect. These included the National Curriculum programmes of study and key-stage assessments, published league tables and collective acts of worship. Respondents were divided as to the impact of other developments, including the advent of local financial management (LMS), grant-maintained status and OFSTED inspections. There was little visible effect on the role structures in schools, with traditional ‘horizontal’ arrangements of years and schools-within-schools predominating. In sum, the picture as regards the impact on pastoral care and PSE of a decade of educational policy change is more optimistic than might have been supposed.

This paper draws on the ‘accidental’ results of a UK national survey of school libraries to explore how school librarians can contribute to student pastoral care. Although the survey did not ask specific questions about student social development, responding librarians identified three key aspects of their contribution: support for learning; maintaining a safe and secure environment; and providing individual support. The librarian’s role in these aspects of social development support are described and then elaborated into three approaches to the pastoral role: ‘play it down’; promote the social role of libraries within the school; or focus on the pastoral needs of individuals. Views are then offered on how school managers, teachers and school librarians themselves can build on the existing pastoral role in a context where there is no statutory requirement to provide school libraries and where library development is heavily dependent upon the vision of the school senior leadership team.

Librarians are using social networking sites as one means of sharing information and connecting with users from diverse groups. Usage statistics and other metrics compiled in 2011 for the library's Facebook page, representative library blogs, and the library YouTube channel were analyzed in an effort to understand how patrons use the library's social networking sites. Librarians also hoped to get a sense of these tools' effectiveness in reaching users at the point of need and engaging them in different ways.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to follow up on the 2009 publication “Building a virtual branch at Vancouver Public Library (VPL) using Web 2.0 tools” and to explore the work that VPL has been doing in the social media space over the past two years. Design/methodology/approach – Following the launch of its new web site in 2008, Vancouver Public Library has continued to expand its online presence, both via its own web properties and in the social media space. At the core of the library's approach to web services is the desire to take the community development model online, and engage with communities in the spaces of their choosing. Findings – The Web Team has been active in moving into the social media space, and was an early adopter of popular social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The social bookmarking site Delicious also became an integral part of the new web site, being used as a management tool for the library's extensive collection of recommended web links. Since 2008 the Web Team has piloted a variety of other Web 2.0 and social media tools, pushing the library's online presence into new spaces while continuing to build on the successes experienced by its established accounts. Originality/value – Libraries are very conscious of the need to leverage social media tools to engage with patrons, but are also facing the challenge of managing these tools with reduced staff and funding. VPL's success in this space offers a model of how to use these tools effectively to engage patrons, develop community, and maximize resources in a time of constrained budgets.

Purpose – The current study aims to present an exploratory analysis of the use of Facebook in American public and academic libraries, with the purpose of understanding patterns of Facebook use in libraries. Design/methodology/approach – This study presents both a statistical descriptive analysis and a content analysis. Findings – The research findings show that both kinds of libraries use the information section and the wall and that there is a difference in the use of other Facebook sections, which was surprisingly limited in both kinds of libraries. In addition, public libraries use the wall and the photos section as major channels of information more than academic libraries. Concentrating on the content of the Facebook wall posts, it appears that there are some differences between the two sections (categories and sub‐categories). However, it seems that both kinds of libraries use Facebook simply as a way to deliver information to users, rather than as a venue for discussion. Originality/value – Research findings enable librarians and information scientists to better understand the Facebook phenomenon in different kinds of libraries.

"Public Libraries as Partners in Youth Development: Lessons and Voices from the Field," published by the Forum in partnership with the Urban Libraries Council, captures key challenges and lessons learned from an innovative, four-year initiative sponsored by the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds that awarded six million dollars to nine library systems. The initiative provided an unprecedented opportunity for libraries to work collaboratively with youth and community partners to strengthen their understanding of and commitment to youth development. We hope the report helps put libraries on the radar screens of the range of systems, organizations and individuals across the allied youth fields as well as stakeholders in neighborhoods across the country that share an interest in partnering with and supporting young people. For gay students, some always feel like they are wearing a mask. They cannot let their family, even their friends, see the real them. According to researchers, the road to adulthood for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered teens is riddled with more potholes than for other teens. For starters, gay teens are two to three times more likely to attempt suicide than straight teens. Gay teens also experience more verbal harassment, physical abuse, family problems, lower self-esteem, social isolation, substance abuse, and school failure than their straight counterparts. All teens need adults in their life who can lend an ear and support them as they mature, but gay teens are especially in need of caring. How can librarians help? The answer to this question is discussed in this article.
