Con anterioridad al proyecto, la información disponible para el musgaño de Cabrera en el área de estudio se restringía únicamente a unas pocas cuadrículas de la provincia de Albacete (Palomo et al., 2007), ampliándose por tanto su distribución conocida. El topo occidental ocupaba solo unas pocas cuadrículas en la Cuenca del Segura (Palomo et al., 2007), correspondientes al sur de Albacete y a la comarca del Altiplano de Jumilla-Yecla, no siendo constatada su presencia en esta última desde hace décadas (Marco et al. 2015). El conocimiento sobre los patrones de distribución de la biodiversidad resulta clave para la gestión de los espacios naturales y la ordenación de las actividades humanas, permitiendo el desarrollo sostenible y manteniendo los servicios ecosistémicos. El estudio de los mamíferos, a pesar de su condición mediática, ha sido tradicionalmente dificultado por los hábitos esquivos, principalmente nocturnos, de muchas especies, así como por la ausencia de técnicas efectivas para su detección. Sin embargo, los avances tecnológicos producidos en las últimas décadas han puesto a disposición de la mastozoología -la ciencia que estudia los mamíferos- un amplio abanico de nuevas técnicas de muestreo, que están permitiendo obtener información sobre grupos históricamente muy poco estudiados. En este contexto nace el Proyecto Encebra, una iniciativa altruista basada en la ciencia ciudadana y que tiene como objetivo principal conocer la distribución de los mamíferos en el sureste ibérico. Desde 2017, los 120 miembros que integran actualmente el Proyecto Encebra han recabado más de 10.400 citas de mamíferos, correspondientes a 78 especies y repartidas entre las 238 cuadrículas UTM 10x10 km que componen el ámbito de estudio. Esta iniciativa, aún en fase de desarrollo, contribuirá a aumentar ostensiblemente el conocimiento de los mamíferos y, consecuentemente, dotará de información a las administraciones públicas para una gestión de la biodiversidad basada en la evidencia.

En la zona estudiada, las primeras referencias de la especie corresponden a ejemplares ahogados en balsas de riego y a restos óseos encontrados en egagrópilas de lechuza (Tyto alba), búho real (Bubo bubo) y cárabo (Strix aluco), y en excrementos de zorro (Vulpes vulpes) y garduña (Martes foina) (datos propios). This study provides 42 new records of bats (UTM squares of 10x10 km) from Yecla (SE Spain). We identified at least 14 bat species and our results allow increasing the distribution area of some rare bat species. The records were obtained between 2011 and 2014 using different methodologies. In total, we made 19 visits potential roosts, 59 listening points and 5 photo-trapping sessions. Our results showed that bat species with high records were Pipistrellus pipistrellus and Pi. pygmaeus. Also, we recorded the presence of rare bat species as Rhinolophus euryale, R. hipposideros, Myotis emarginatus and My. escalerai. Finally, we discussed about their conservation status and which are the conservation and management measures that we must implement.

ABSTRACT • The ecological effects and distribution of 13 invasive non-native mammal species on the Canary Islands are reviewed. • Six species, representing six different taxonomic orders, are widely distributed and live on all seven main islands of the Canarian Archipelago: Felis catus, Capra hircus, Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus, Mus domesticus and Oryctolagus cuniculus. Atelerix algirus is found on four islands while six further species are present on only one island: Crocidura russula, Suncus etruscus, Rousettus egyptiacus, Ovis gmelini, Ammotragus lervia and Atlantoxerus getulus. • Five species have an omnivorous diet, four are herbivorous, two insectivorous, one frugivorous and one carnivorous. The ecological effects and damage caused by these species in the natural habitats of the Canaries are similar to those in other insular regions. To our knowledge, the effects of two species, A. lervia (herbivorous) and A. getulus (omnivorous), are as yet unreported for other insular environments. • Two of the most pernicious effects caused by invasive non-native mammal species in the Canaries consist of predation by feral cats of the three giant lizard species present in the western islands, but especially Gallotia gomerana, which is now on the verge of extinction; and the damage that the four species of herbivores cause to the endemic flora of the archipelago.

We investigated the parasite communities of introduced Iberian hares (Lepus granatensis) and native European hares (Lepus europaeus) in southern France, where Iberian hares were introduced locally 20 yr ago as a game animal. Parasite communities of sympatric populations of the two hare species and of allopatric populations of European hares were compared. Iberian hares in France harbored a depauperate community of parasites relative to the population in its native habitat in Spain. European hares in areas of sympatry also were infected by Nematodiroides zembrae, which normally infects Iberian hares on their native range.

Spectral and temporal features of echolocation calls emitted by 22 bat species from Italy (three rhinolophids, 18 vespertilionids and the molossid Tadarida teniotis) are described. Time-expanded recordings of calls from 950 bats of known identity were examined. Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, R. hipposideros, R. euryale and T. teniotis could be identified by measuring the call frequency of highest energy (FMAXE). Quadratic discriminant function analysis with cross-validation was applied to calls from the remaining 18 species. A function based on start frequency (SF), end frequency (EF), FMAXE and duration (D) provided a correct overall classification of approximately 82%. A classification model at genus level that also comprised middle frequency (MF) and inter-pulse interval (IPI) reached 94% correct classification. Two separate discriminant functions were devised for species emitting FM (frequency modulated) and FM/QCF calls (i.e. calls consisting of a frequency-modulated component followed by a terminal part whose frequency is almost constant) respectively. The former function included SF, EF, FMAXE and D and provided an overall classification rate of 71%; the latter comprised EF, MF, D and IPI, and reached 96%. The functions may be applied to bat habitat surveys in southern Italy since they cover most of the species occurring in the area.

Seasonal variations in the diet composition and prey selection by Myotis myotis were studied in a Mediterranean region dominated by open stone oak woodlands, olive groves, and cereal steppes. The diet and food abundance were determined by faecal analysis and pitfall trapping, respectively. Overall, the diet (expressed as % frequency) was dominated by carabid beetles (Carabidae, 52%), crickets (Gryllidae, 43%), and spiders (Arachnida, 34%). Food was far more abundant in the spring than in the summer and autumn. The dietary composition varied significantly throughout the year. In the spring, it was dominated by carabids and crickets, and in the summer by spiders. These were then replaced by carabids, which became the most frequently eaten prey in autumn. The spring-summer switch to spiders coincided with a marked drop in food abundance. Some of the temporal variations in bats' diet can be explained by parallel changes in prey abundance. In comparison to central European populations, our Mediterranean colony of M. myotis consumed much more crickets and spiders, which was balanced with a lower use of carabid beetles. Prey selection was tested using logistic regression models. The results suggest that, although carabids are the most consumed, crickets are preferred. Spiders seem to represent mostly a complement preyed upon at times of lower food abundance. It is not clear if the preference for crickets is simply due to their great conspicuousness, or to the choice based on energetic rewards or taste. Overall, our results are consistent with the predictions of the optimal foraging theory.

The knowledge of the diet of endangered species provides information on ecology and behaviour that is essential for the adequate management of their populations. Population decline may be indeed associated with diet specialization and unavailability of feeding resources, especially in modified environments. We studied the diet and prey selection of Rhinolophus hipposideros Borkhausen, 1797 in a modified Mediterranean landscape in Portugal, where this species is classified as vulnerable. Diet composition was evaluated by analyzing faecal pellets collected in a breeding colony of R. hipposideros, and the available arthropods were sampled using a light trap set outside the roost. The most consumed prey were Lepidoptera, Tipulidae (Diptera), Hymenoptera, Diptera and Neuroptera. Arthropod diversity remained fairly constant in the diet, but not in terms of prey availability. Our results show that R. hipposideros is a generalist species that feeds on a great number of prey species. However, our data suggest that, within the broad dietary niche, R. hipposideros is not opportunistic, actively selecting Diptera as a preferred food item. Despite the marked dif ferences in foraging habitats, our results are closely match to those of studies done in Western and Central Europe, suggesting that R. hipposideros feeds on similar taxa all across Europe. However, as many studies indicate, this species selects broadleaved woodlands and riparian vegetation to forage, so conservation measures should take into account the protection of native forest and the maintenance of forest corridors among them, as R. hipposideros seems to avoid crossing open areas.

In dry Mediterranean forests, ponds constitute essential water resources for animals, especially during summer months. In south-eastern Spain, land use changes and the human abandonment of mountainous zones have led to the loss of many ponds. These ponds are scarce landscape elements and, despite their usually small size (<1000 m2), they support a considerable amount of biodiversity. We studied the patterns of use of these ponds by bats during the activity season in dry forest landscapes of a Mediterranean region using acoustic monitoring. Our hypothesis was that these ponds are valuable landscape elements for bats, and bat activity and richness species will be high over them. Bat activity and species richness were compared between ponds and adjacent sampling points in the forest matrix. We recorded 14 bat species and our results show that both general bat activity (all species grouped together) and species richness were higher in the ponds than in the forest areas. Bat activity was higher in June, however it decreased during drier months (July–August), while activity in the forest increased. The number of species was constant in the areas surrounding the ponds through the study period, but in the forest we observed an increase in July and a gradual decrease in August-September. Similar results were obtained for most individual species, although in some species activity was also influenced by temporal variables. Our study shows that the maintenance of small ponds may have important consequences for bat conservation, as they support high bat diversity, including some species of conservation concern like horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus spp.) or Myotis spp.

The Cabrera vole (Microtus cabrerae Thomas 1906) in an endemic and endangered species of the Iberian Peninsula. The voles inhabited "juncales", small patches of sedge-rushes and grasses (usually less than 250 m2 in area). The feeding of Cabrera vole was studied through faecal pellet analysis. The voles voles consumed mainly grasses and sedge-rushes (over 60% of the diet). Both plant taxon were the main items consumed all year round. Finally, the role of the habitat stability was discussed in relation to the species conservation.

The distribution of foraging Myotis daubentonii and Pipistrellus pipistrellus bats (Vespertilionidae) was investigated along an upland river in relation to the smoothness of the water surface and the extent of bankside vegetation. It was found that both bat species significantly preferred sections of the river with smooth water surfaces and trees on both banks. The abundance of insects flying just above the water surface was also significantly greater in sections with a smooth water surface with trees on both sides. The distribution of bats thus probably correlated with the higher densities of insects, and may also have been related to the avoidance of noise from rough water areas which interferes with echolocation. The results suggest that in upland river systems, maintenance and enhancement of bankside vegetation and tree cover in association with the maintenance and enhancement of a mosaic of water surfaces (to include some smooth water where trees are present) will increase the value of the riverine habitat to bats.

Volunteers counted lesser horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros) emerging from 79 roosts throughout Wales prior to parturition over a 5-year period. Analysis of the count data and environmental variables revealed that there was no statistically significant change in the number of bats counted during the monitoring period. A maximum count of 5118 lesser horseshoe bats for one of the years of the study, suggests a Welsh population of >10,000. Within years, date had a strong influence on roost count with higher counts occurring later in the year. Analyses of roosts for which data was available in most years failed to find any evidence of changes in number of emerging bats over time either between roosts or across geographical regions. Over the time period studied, the population of R. hipposideros was stable. Power analysis suggested that the present monitoring programme should be able to detect a 5% increase or decrease over a 5-year period and could detect smaller trends over longer periods of time even when some data were missing. Roost surveys can therefore be a valuable tool to assess the status of a bat species, alert conservationists to population declines and provide feedback regarding the success of conservation management for bats.
