Abstract and Figures

The research study at hand aims to answer the question, whether an innovative information system can be implemented that will help to enhance reading literacy of elementary pupils. Based on predefined reading tests this web-based system evaluates the reading literacy of pupils. It consists of two primary parts; the system that creates and evaluates such reading tests and the test platform itself. In order to assess the system a field test was conducted. Therefore it was tested in two school classes. In the course of this study reading tests were carried out and retrieved data and results were evaluated. Despite some minor usability problems, the system performed very well. The test system delivered good estimations of the reading capabilities of single pupils and classes. Of special interest is the system’s analysis of the created reading tests since the system is capable of evaluating reading test according to their difficulty

This study proposed a theoretical model explaining causal relationships between student participation and academic achievement through their learning analytics in a web–based distance education course, testing it using structural equation modeling (SEM) with an empirical dataset. The sample was composed of 167 university students enrolled in the Department of Computer Programming in the Distance Education Vocational School at a major state university in Turkey. Student participation was operationalized through learning analytics of the number of submissions to discussion forums and attendance to online lectures whereas academic achievement was represented by students’ performance on their project assignments and final exam. The results of the SEM analysis indicated that the modified version of the model had a good fit with the data (x²=2.52, df=1, p>.05, x²/df=2.52, GFI=.99, CFI=.99, RMSEA=.09, SRMR=.03). Discussion forum submission and online lecture attendance were found to be positively associated with each other. They had a positive direct effect on students’ project scores and a positive indirect effect on students’ final exam scores via their project scores. Moreover, discussion forum submission was found to have a direct positive effect on students’ final exam scores. Practical implications and suggestions for further research are discussed within the context of online learning.

Background: Although facility-based cancer rehabilitation and exercise programs exist, patients are often unable to attend due to distance, cost, and other competing obligations. There is a need for scalable remote interventions that can reach and serve a larger population. Methods: We conducted a mixed methods pilot study to assess the feasibility, acceptability and impact of CaRE@Home: an 8-week online multidimensional cancer rehabilitation and exercise program. Feasibility and acceptability data were captured by attendance and adherence metrics and through qualitative interviews. Preliminary estimates of the effects of CaRE@Home on patient-reported and physically measured outcomes were calculated. Results: A total of n = 35 participated in the study. Recruitment (64%), retention (83%), and adherence (80%) rates, along with qualitative findings, support the feasibility of the CaRE@Home intervention. Acceptability was also high, and participants provided useful feedback for program improvements. Disability (WHODAS 2.0) scores significantly decreased from baseline (T1) to immediately post-intervention (T2) and three months post-intervention (T3) (p = 0.03 and p = 0.008). Physical activity (GSLTPAQ) levels significantly increased for both Total LSI (p = 0.007 and p = 0.0002) and moderate to strenuous LSI (p = 0.003 and p = 0.002) from baseline to T2 and T3. Work productivity (iPCQ) increased from T1 to T3 (p = 0.026). There was a significant increase in six minute walk distance from baseline to T2 and T3 (p < 0.001 and p = 0.010) and in grip strength from baseline to T2 and T3 (p = 0.003 and p < 0.001). Conclusions: Results indicate that the CaRE@Home program is a feasible and acceptable cancer rehabilitation program that may help cancer survivors regain functional ability and decrease disability. In order to confirm these findings, a controlled trial is required.

This study aimed to compare and contrast educational presentations prepared with the help of PowerPoint (PPT) program and augmented reality (AR) and to explore teacher candidates' presentation experiences in terms of impact on learning, motivation, usability/employability, and positive and negative aspects. In this context, a qualitative study with a phenomenological design was conducted. The study group was composed of teacher candidates attending the Department of Computer Education. Study data were collected via the interview form developed by the researchers. Research results show that AR applications are superior to PPT presentations in many respects, and while both AR and PPT presentations have positive and negative aspects, traditional learning environments with PPT presentations are no longer sufficient to attract the attention and interest of today's students and meet current demands. Moreover, there is a need to increase educational content and infrastructure to improve the use of AR in addition to providing training to teacher candidates and teachers.

The virtual laboratory of digital electronics using mobile virtual reality technology to save to cost of making real laboratory. Mobile virtual reality can use by student to practice digital electronics skill in their home. This study to finds the skill improvement of student in competency digital electronics using virtual laboratory with mobile virtual reality based. Virtual laboratory can help student to feel the real practice of laboratory in everywhere and every time. The feature of virtual laboratory is: (1) enable to do practice digital electronics in every time and everywhere, (2) student can do experiment like in laboratory using android phone, (3) support with many of android phone series. This study uses the method of research and development with waterfall model that have five stages to develop a software application. The results show that the virtual laboratory can help student to improve their skill of digital electronics because easy feature and real time of virtual laboratory.

Within the evolution of technology in education, Learning Analytics has reserved its position as a robust technological field that promises to empower instructors and learners in different educational fields. The 2014 horizon report (Johnson et al., 2014), expects it to be adopted by educational institutions in the near future. However, the processes and phases as well as constraints are still not deeply debated. In this research study, the authors talk about the essence, objectives and methodologies of Learning Analytics and propose a first prototype life cycle that describes its entire process. Furthermore, the authors raise substantial questions related to challenges such as security, policy and ethics issues that limit the beneficial appliances of Learning Analytics processes.

Much has been written lately about the potential of Learning Analytics for improving learning and teaching. Nevertheless, most of the contributions to date are concentrating on the abstract theoretical or algorithmic level, or, deal with academic efficiencies like teachers’ grading habits. This paper wants to focus on the value that Learning Analytics brings to pedagogic interventions and feedback for reflection. We first analyse what Learning Analytics has to offer in this respect, and, then, present a practical use case of applied Learning Analytics for didactic support in primary school Arithmetic.

This paper evaluates and describes the usage of plastic cards, coated with conductive paint, as an input device for capacitive touchscreens. By using the developed card prototypes it should be proofed, that usage of this new kind of input device can be handled by primary school pu- pils in a collaborative learning game. For this reason an educative digital learning game has been developed which can be controlled by the card prototypes. The game asks questions of general knowledge and the answer can be given by putting the proper plastic card on the touchscreen. The evaluation of the game by two groups of four children pointed out, that the cards can be easily used to identify a specific user. Although evaluation shows that the card con- trol has weaknesses to reliably detect the correct answer during the game phase. All pupils enjoy to play the game and they additionally state, that they like the usage of the cards. Beside the problems with a reliable card recognition the evaluation shows that the collaborative concept of the game is promising due to the fact that the pupils are always work- ing together on finding a solution for the answer. Further they support each other in handling and understanding the plastic cards which leads to a deeper understanding of the technical backgrounds.

Nell’era di Internet, delle tecnologie mobili e dell’istruzione aperta, la necessità di interventi per migliorare l’efficienza e la qualità dell’istruzione superiore è diventata pressante. I big data e il Learning Analytics possono contribuire a condurre questi interventi, e a ridisegnare il futuro dell’istruzione superiore. Basare le decisioni su dati e sulle evidenze empiriche sembra incredibilmente ovvio. Tuttavia, l’istruzione superiore, un campo che raccoglie una quantità enorme di dati sui propri “clienti”, è stata tradizionalmente inefficiente nell’utilizzo dei dati, spesso operando con notevole ritardo nell’analizzarli, pur essendo questi immediatamente disponibili. In questo articolo, viene evidenziato il valore delle tecniche di analisi dei dati per l’istruzione superiore, e presentato un modello di sviluppo per i dati legati all’apprendimento. Ovviamente, l’apprendimento è un fenomeno complesso, e la sua descrizione attraverso strumenti di analisi non è semplice; pertanto, l’articolo presenta anche le principali problematiche etiche e pedagogiche connesse all’utilizzo delle tecniche di analisi dei dati in ambito educativo. Cionondimeno, il Learning Analytics può penetrare la nebbia di incertezza che avvolge il futuro dell’istruzione superiore, e rendere più evidente come allocare le risorse, come sviluppare vantaggi competitivi e, soprattutto, come migliorare la qualità e il valore dell’esperienza di apprendimento.

With the increase in available educational data, it is expected that Learning Analytics will become a powerful means to inform and support learners, teachers and their institutions in better understanding and predicting personal learning needs and performance. However, the processes and requirements behind the beneficial application of Learning and Knowledge Analytics as well as the consequences for learning and teaching are still far from being understood. In this paper, we explore the key dimensions of Learning Analytics (LA), the critical problem zones, and some potential dangers to the beneficial exploitation of educational data. We propose and discuss a generic design framework that can act as a useful guide for setting up Learning Analytics services in support of educational practice and learner guidance, in quality assurance, curriculum development, and in improving teacher effectiveness and efficiency. Furthermore, the presented article intends to inform about soft barriers and limitations of Learning Analytics. We identify the required skills and competences that make meaningful use of Learning Analytics data possible to overcome gaps in interpretation literacy among educational stakeholders. We also discuss privacy and ethical issues and suggest ways in which these issues can be addressed through policy guidelines and best practice examples.

Through information visualization techniques, we can provide a dashboard for learners and teachers, so that they no longer need to "drive blind". Moreover, recommendation can help to deal with the "paradox of choice" and turn abundance from a problem into an asset for learning.

The advantages and disadvantages, as well as the cost and efficiency of prototyping, will be discussed followed by the essential resources neccessary to effectively prototype applications. In conclusion, to illustrate the benefits of prototyping, the speaker will present success stories of systems developed using the prototyping approach.

A two-phased research project comparing the prototyping approach with the more traditional life cycle approach finds that prototyping facilitates communication between users and designers during the design process. However, the findings also indicate that designers who used prototyping experienced difficulties in managing and controlling the design process.
