Shortfin mako records for the Mediterranean Sea indicate that juveniles may be as small as TL 65 cm [26] and adults may reach lengths of over 400 cm, with the largest female record being estimated at a total length of 585 cm [63]. While it is known that north Atlantic Shortfin makos mature at a TL larger than those of southern Atlantic origin [9], the Mediterranean hosts some of the largest known specimens for the species [63][64][65][66]. During the current study, at least 11 individuals were larger than the median TL at maturity, as it has been estimated that, in the north Atlantic Ocean, males mature at a median fork length (FL) of around 182 cm [7,67], while females mature at a median FL of 280 cm [7]. ...

The Shortfin mako shark, Isurus oxyrinchus Rafinesque, 1810, is a globally distributed highly migratory pelagic shark species, occurring mostly in temperate and tropical regions, including the Mediterranean Sea where it is by-caught during fishing activities targeting other economically important fish species. The aim of this study is to investigate the genetic connectivity of the Shortfin mako from the central Mediterranean Sea to previously studied populations. The mtDNA control region (CR), 977 bp, of 37 I. oxyrinchus specimens collected between 2004 and 2012 from landings in Malta were analysed, and we identified nine haplotypes, including three newly discovered haplotypes that may be unique to the Mediterranean Sea and which represent 16.7% of the studied individuals. These haplotypes, together with variations in haplotype frequencies, led to significant FST and ϕST values between the Mediterranean population and other global populations, with the exception of that from the north Atlantic Ocean. This study provides the first insight of the mtDNA CR diversity of this critically endangered species in the Mediterranean Sea and highlights the importance of conserving this species in the region.
... The shortfin mako is present in the entire Mediterranean (De Maddalena & Baensch, 2005), where it is caught mainly by tuna longline fisheries and occasionally by swordfish fisheries using longlines and driftnets (Celona et al., 2004;Megalofonou et al., 2005). Although the majority of shortfin mako catches are recorded in pelagic fisheries, in a recent report, Kabasakal (2015) emphasized that new-born and juvenile specimens of I. oxyrinchus can be incidentally caught by coastal stationary netting and bottom longline fishing, as well. Data on the presence of the species in the Strait of Sicily has also been reported in recent years by Rafrafi-Nouira et al. (2019). ...
... Another 390 cm long specimen, weighing 513 kg, was caught on 20 September 2000 off Punta Alice, Italy (Storai et al., 2001). A 390 cm long female was caught on 26 July 2003 off (Kabasakal, 2015). Another female, measuring 370 cm TL, was caught between Portopalo di Capo Passero and Marzamemi, Italy, on 22 June 2004 (Celona et al., 2004). ...
... Contemporary occurrence of Isurus oxyrinchus in Turkish waters is mentioned in Bilecenoğlu et al., 2014) and historical captures of the short fin mako shark in the area suggest that it appears to be sporadically caught in the Turkish marine waters (Kabasakal, 2015(Kabasakal, , 2017aKabasakal & De Maddalena, 2011;Kabasakal & Kabasakal, 2013;Suljić, 2021;Robles et al., 2015). The purpose of the present paper is the record a new-born specimen together with a literature review to assess the actual status of the species in the same area (Sreenivasulu et al., 2024;Srkalović et al., 2020;Ferretti et al., 2008). ...

The study reports on the capture of a newborn specimen of shortfin mako shark Isurus oxyrinchus Rafinesque, 1810 off Karantina islet coast, Urla, Izmir (north Aegean Sea). This specimen measured 761 mm in total length and weighed 2900 g. The historical and recent captures of the species in the area shows the presence of newborn , juvenile and adult males and females. The distribution of these specimens suggests the potential occurrence of a nursery ground in the same area. To preserve the extirpation of the species throughout the area where it finds favourable environmental parameters to live, a management plan should be conducted to ensure the establishment of a viable population in the Turkish marine waters.
... This species can sometimes attain huge sizes, but records of specimens reaching and exceeding 4 m are very rare [De Maddalena et al., 2023]. The largest shortfin mako reported to date worldwide was a female caught in the late 1950s in the Aegean Sea off Marmaris, Turkey, which was estimated at 585-cm TL [Kabasakal, De Maddalena, 2011]. The second largest mako ever recorded was an esti- Conclusion. ...

A large female shortfin mako shark, Isurus oxyrinchus Rafinesque, 1810, was observed on 26 March, 2023, off Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The total length was carefully estimated at 450 cm. This shark is the third largest mako ever recorded and the second largest observed and photographed alive.
... The estimated maximum size of shortfin mako reaches 500 cm in total length (TL) (Lopez-Mirones et al., 2020). Although size records above 400 cm are rare and many are estimations, Kabasakal & De Maddalena (2011) used photographs to estimate the size of an I. oxyrinchus caught in the Aegean Sea at between 577-619 cm TL, the largest length estimated on record to date. ...

This paper is a checklist of the fishes that have been documented, through both published and unpublished sources, in marine and estuarine waters, and out 200 miles, from the United States-Canadian border on the Beaufort Sea to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. A minimum of 241 families and 1,644 species are known within this range, including both native and nonnative species. For each of these species, we include maximum size, geographic and depth ranges, whether it is native or nonnative, as well as a brief mention of any taxonomic issues.
