Study of some morphometric and meristic characters of striped piggy fish, Pomadasys stridens (Forsskal, 1775) from Karachi Coast, Pakistan

Abstract and Figures

ABSTRACT: In the present study 391 fish samples (155 male and 236 female) of Pomadasys stridens of variable sizes ranging from 3.5-106 g weight in male; 14-130g weight in female and 56-198 mm in total length (TL) in male while 99-210 mm (TL) in female were sampled from Karachi coast. This fish showed constant meristic characters. Statistical interpretation of Metric data indicated that there is direct relationship between total body length with Head length (HL), snout length (Sn. L), Eye diameter (E.D) and Length of Caudal peduncle (CPL). The meristic characters like dorsal fin rays, anal fin rays, Lateral line scales, gill rakers on lower arm and scales in transversal line were counted. No sexual dimorphism was found in Pomadasys stridens.

Abstract
In the present study 391 fish samples (155 male and 236 female) of Pomadasys stridens of

1. Introduction
Commercial quantities of large numbers of finfish and shellfish are present in the Pakistani
coastal waters
[1]
. The striped piggy, Pomadasys stridens is among the fish species of economic
importance in the Pakistani coastal waters. It belongs to the family Haemulidae and can be
found at depths between 30 -68m depth in Bentho-pelagic and reef associated tropical areas of
Western Indian Ocean, Red Sea, and east Africa to Mozambique to the Arabian Gulf (Fig. 1).
Some works have been reported on different aspects of different species of family
Pomadasyidae (Grunt fishes) From Pakistan
[2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 & 13]
. Historically, the
morphology of fishes has been the primary source of information for taxonomic and
evolutionary studies. There are numerous characters available for morphological study. These
characters are most commonly divided in to two categories:
Morphometic: characters refer to measureable structures such as fin length, head length,
eye diameter, or ratios between such measurements.
Meristic characters include almost any countable structure, including fin rays, scales, gill
rakers, and so on.

Some works on different aspects of Pomadasys
stridens are available like:

, but practically,
no work has been under taken on Morphometry of
Pomadasys stridens from Pakistan or elsewhere in the
world. Since these information are vital for the proper
management of the fisheries and for optimum
utilization of the resources, the present study was
therefore, under taken.
2. Materials and Methods
2.1 Study area
The Karachi coast was the study area for this research.
The Karachi coastline is between latitude 24°53'N and
longitude 67°00'E, and lies in the Northern boundary of
Arabian Sea.
2.2 Collection of specimens and sampling
Samples of Pomadasys stridens (Fig. 2) were collected
fortnightly from fish harbors of West Wharf and
Korangi Creek of Karachi coast. The fish was
identified by using the Bianchi,
[2]
. Simple random
sampling technique was used. A total of 391 samples
collected during the study period. The samples were
transported to the laboratory and preserved in a deep
freezer at -20 °C until examination and analysis.
2.3 Body measurements
The specimens were brought out of the deep freezer
and allowed to thaw and the body length was measured
using a one-meter measuring board graduated in mm.
Morphometic characters like total body length (TL),
Head length (HL), snout length (Sn. L), Eye diameter
(E.D) and Length of Caudal peduncle (CPL) were
measured.
Meristic characters like dorsal fin rays, anal fin rays,
Lateral line scales, gill rakers on lower arm and scales
in transversal line were counted.

3. Results and Discussion
3.1 Morphometric Characters
The morphometric indices of linear measurements
(head length, snout length, eye diameter, and caudal
peduncle) have been expressed as indices (%) with
reference to total length (Table 2, Fig. 3 & 4). The
linear measurements have been expressed as indices
with reference to total length. The indices show the
same values in both sexes, which show that there is no
sexual dimorphism in both sexes.
The variety of morphometric parameters taken for the
fish sampled are given in table 2. The total body length
of fish had a range of 56mm to 219mm, Head length
(HL) had a range of 14mm to 55mm, snout length (Sn.
L) was 4.5mm to 19mm, Eye diameter (ED) was
4.5mm to 14.16mm and the Length of caudal peduncle
(CPL) was 5.5mm to 21mm.
The linear relationship of various morphometric
characters and total length was reported by Khumar
and Siddiqui
[16]
, Rizkalla
[17]
, Pandey et al.
[18]
, Jaiswar
et al.
[19]
in various fish species.
Again, it was observed that all the body parameters
show higher values of linear correlation with total
length and head length. This indicates that the growth
of fish in one area of the body is co-related to growth
in another area of the body. Oniye et al.
[20]
, in their
study of biology of Protopterus annectens in Jachi
Dam stated that the high regression coefficient
obtained for the relationship between pectoral and
pelvic fins length should be taken that the pectoral fin
grows at approximately the same rate as the pelvic fin
though the pectoral fin is longer than the pelvic fin.
The correlation coefficient of the pectoral/pelvic fins
with the total length shows that they all increase at the
same rate.

3.2 Meristic Characters
Meristic formula: D, XII + 14-16; A, III + 9; STL, 9-10
(1) 23-26; LL, 57-60; GR, 15-16
Diagnosis: Dorsal spines (total): 12; Dorsal soft rays
(total): 14-16; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 9; Lateral
lines scales 57-60. (Tab. 1).
Silvery, darker above, with 4 stripes along body. Upper
opercle with a dark blotch and a stripe. Pectoral fin tip
when vented, equal or reaching past the pelvic fin tip.
Body oblong and compressed. Dorsal fin deeply
notched its origin on vertical line of pectoral fin base.
Penultimate dorsal spine much smaller than ultimate.
Second anal spine larger and thicker than first and third
spines. Caudal fin moderately forked. Two pores and a
median pit on the chin. Small ctenoid scales. Body -
yellowish silvery-gray with white belly. Three
longitudinal brown yellow-gold stripes. Black spot on
the upper margin of operculum.

4. Conclusion
The morphometric measurements and meristic counts
confirmed that the test organism is Pomadasys stridens
and it predominantly exists in Karachi coast.

The Morphometric measurements of Wallago attu presented in the Table 1 which depicts that total length 63.83±1.08 and total standard length 59.35±1.28 in cm. The correlation coefficient (r) was minimum 0.256, 0.476 and 0.486 in caudal length, anal fin length, and dorsal fin length respectively. Whereas it was maximum 0.707, 0.666 and 0.602 in total length, standard length and head length for the W. attu. The regression coefficient (b) was also observed and it was minimum 0.814 in eye dia and maximum 59.53 in total length of W. attu. The value of 'b' was shows negative allometric growth (b < 3.0), positive allometric growth (b > 3.0) and isometric growth (b = 3.0) hence, current study shows that other morphometric parameters with total length shows positive allometric growth for W. attu. Meristic counts also show dorsal fin ray 6, pectoral fin ray 16, anal fin ray 93, pelvic fin ray 12, caudal fin ray 18 and two pairs of barbles.

Feeding habits of Pomadasys stridens were studied in northern part of the Persian Gulf. A total of 591 specimens were collected from the coastal water of Bushehr Province using trawl boats from May 2012 to April 2013 and diet composition, feeding intensity and season changes in diet composition were investigated. Vacuity Index was 81% during the study. RGL was 0.98±0.03 classifying this species as carnivorous to omnivorous fish. Pomadasys stridens had consumed 48 different food categories in 7 taxonomic classes. Crustacean, Mollusca, foraminifera, nematodes, Echinodermata, Annelida and miscellaneous were the main observed food items. There was no significant difference between males and females regarding diet composition in different months.

Morphometric and meristic characters of the two carangid species, C. crysos and C. rhonchus were studied from Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia, Eastern Mediterranean. Monthly samples of the two species were collected during one year for this study. Eleven morphometric (in percentage of total fish length) and seven meristic characters have been studied. No significant differences were observed between male and female fish. Negative allometric growth of morphometric characters of C. crysos and C. rhonchus were observed.

Morphometric and meristic characters of Greater amberjack Seriola dumerili have been studied from Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia, Eastern Mediterranean. Samples of S. dumerili were collected in the period June 2004 to May 2006 for this study. Eleven morphometric in percentage of total fish length and seven meristic characters have been studied. No significant differences were observed between male and female fish. Isometric and both positive and negative allometric growth of morphometric characters of Seriola dumerili were observed. Therefore, the present study gives information to fishery biologists about morphometric and meristic characters of the fish, Seriola dumerili from the Tunisian waters. This will help to plan further conservation strategy for this fish.

Thirteen morphometric characters of catfish Silurus triostegus were studied from three localities on the Tigris and Shatt al-Arab rivers, Iraq. Monthly samples revealed no significant differences between genders. Positive allometric growths for all morphometric characters studied were observed. This study gives information to fishery biologists about morphometric characters of S. triostegus from the Tigris and Shatt al-Arab rivers to assist in planning of conservation strategies for this fish species. Pomadasys stridens (Forsskal, 1775) is excellent food fish and widely distributed in the Indo-pacific region. It inhabits higher part of rocky tide pools, and shallow waters. The pattern of food and feeding habits of Pomadasys stridens were studied during the period from January 2001 to April 2002 using points and frequency of occurrence methods. The fish was observed to be carnivorous, which fed mainly on Crustaceans (14.53), mollusks (11.57) small teleosts (11.1), and pollychaets (1.99) etc. Analysis of fullness of stomach revealed 4.84% gorged, 9.76% full, 2.85% ¾ full, 10.07% ½ full, 14.39% ¼ full, 23.04% little and 35.04% were found to be empty. Feeding intensities were higher in fishes of larger size groups (140-219mm) while poor feeding condition was exhibited by smaller size groups (50-139mm). The composition of food of different size groups and seasons was calculated. Semi digested food, Crustaceans and miscellaneous food materials were the most frequent food items for smaller size groups (50-139mm), while the diet constituent shifted to semi digested food, miscellaneous, mollusks, teleosts and crustaceans respectively in larger size groups (140-219).

The sex ratio, gonadosomatic index, stages of gonadal development and fecundity of saddle grunt fish, Pomadasys maculatum (Block, 1793) of the Karachi coast were investigated. Pomadasys maculatum had a sex ratio of 1: 1.36 (male to female). The difference in sex ratio was not significantly different (p > 0.05) from the expected theoretically 1: 1 distribution except June, September and December. Gonadosomatic index value in males during August – November were 3.109 to 5.630, while in females the high values during August – December were found to be 3.542 to 6.679, which suggested the spawning period. The highest GSI value in males was 5.967 in stage VI and the lowest GSI value was 1.256 recorded during VII stage. GSI values in males increased slowly reaching for maximum in 5.967 in (stage VI), while in females at high value was 6.630 during stage VI and the lowest GSI values were 1.625 and 1.124 during stages I & II respectively. Seven stages of gonadal development were observed in male and female fish. Pomadasys maculatum is found in coastal waters over sand near reefs or muddy bottoms. The results will increase our knowledge of reproductive biology of Pomadasys maculatum which is relevant for fisheries and aquaculture management as well as breeding programs.

In the present study 391 fish samples (155 male and 236 female) of Pomadasys stridens of variable sizes ranging from 3.5-106 g weight in male; 14-130g weight in female and 56-198 mm in total length (TL) in male while 99-210 mm (TL) in female were sampled from Karachi coast. This fish showed constant meristic characters. Statistical interpretation of Metric data indicated that there is direct relationship between total body length with Head length (HL), snout length (Sn. L), Eye diameter (E.D) and Length of Caudal peduncle (CPL). The meristic characters like dorsal fin rays, anal fin rays, Lateral line scales, gill rakers on lower arm and scales in transversal line were counted. No sexual dimorphism was found in Pomadasys stridens.

The Striped piggy grunt, Pomadasys stridens is among the fish species of great economic importance in the Pakistani coastal waters. It belongs to the family Haemulidae and can be found at depths between 30-68m of the Western Indian Ocean, Red Sea, East Africa to Mozambique and Persian Gulf. Gonadosomatic index which is an index of gonad size relative to fish size is a good indicator of gonadal development in fish [2]. The percentage of body weight of fish that is used for production of eggs is determined by the gonadosomatic index. The morphometric and meristic studies on obtuse barracuda Sphyraena obtusata from Mumbai (Bombay) waters indicated allometric relationship and high degree of homogeneity within the population. Based on the present study, the fin formula can be written as B. vii, D. 5, 1/9, P. 14, V. 1/5, A. 2/9, C 17, LI.'90-95, two gill rakers on the first gill arch. Variations observed in some of the meristic counts when compared with findings from different locations indicate the presence of different stocks. The length-weight relationship for the species from the Mumbai waters is estimated to be W = 0.0000245L 2'7226. Deviation in the growth rate "b" observed during the present investigation from that of other countries and different region in India itself is result of variations in ecology of these geographical locations.
