The innovation process typically comprises several stages with specific objectives and a logical sequence to mitigate uncertainties inherent to stage-specific challenges. Traditional models, however, often fall short for established firms aiming to foster innovation amid significant uncertainty. This paper introduces the Validated Innovation Process, designed to facilitate the conception and development of ventures in highly regulated and high-risk environments, emphasizing validation through experiential learning. It integrates traditional business, product, and service development methods with lean innovation perspectives, incorporating abductive reasoning and effectuation principles. This hybrid approach was developed over an 18-month research initiative, grounded in Design Science Research and addressing real-world needs in a large-scale health insurance company. The resulting structured process comprises three maturity levels, progressing from abstract concepts to validated and robust business models. The findings demonstrate strong alignment with practical applications, providing a clear framework for new venture development, effective team communication, phase integration, and the maturation of innovative outcomes. This process effectively addresses the specific challenges of launching new ventures amid high uncertainty within a regulated corporate environment.

Resumen El objetivo del presente artículo de investigación, en el ámbito del marco referencial de la tesis doctoral, es la descripción de los antecedentes y propuestas de los efectos de la evaluación del desempeño organizacional en la innovación industrial (desempeño de la innovación), que implica la mención de las aportaciones de autores, y sus respectivos enfoques de innovar una organización por medio de un análisis documental empresarial y modelos desarrollado con respecto al contexto de la época en que se aplicó, por ejemplo, en el ambiente corporativo, el Grupo Consultor de Boston, en el año 2016, propone que los grandes innovadores tejen redes de colaboración a su alrededor y conciben la generación de ideas como algo democrático. This study integrates the (extended) resource-based view (ERBV/RBV) and non-market strategy (i.e., corporate political activity) to investigate the role of internal and external resources as drivers of innovation in small and medium-sized enterprises in emerging markets (ESMEs). Using primary data from 192 Vietnam SMEs collected between 2014 and 2016, we adopted a partial least square estimation to examine our hypotheses, supplemented by ordinary least square and unobserved heterogeneity tests for robustness. Our PLS-SEM results reveal that firms with intangible resources, from human capital investment to political connections, are more likely to innovate. While the positive effect of human capital investment on innovation is not moderated by government information access, the impact of political connections as an extended resource is significantly enhanced by access to government information. On the other hand, international export experience is not related to innovation by itself, but it is positively moderated by government information access, suggesting that engaging in international markets alone is insufficient. This study contributes to the emerging market literature by examining the effects of intangible resources and political connections on ESMEs’ innovation and highlighting the role of government information as a non-market strategy access in enhancing these relationships.

Society relies on technology and innovation (T&I) to tackle some of its great challenges, and it has been given even more importance since the increasing concern over sustainability issues. A particular concern is the Amazon rainforest’s impact on sustainability and what this means for the planet. The paper analyzes how research on technology and innovation in the Amazon region is addressing sustainability issues. This wide-ranging intentional approach has led to an integrative picture, providing the first systematic literature review that connects these themes within a specific region, resulting in 222 academic publications from 1992 to 2020. The main findings indicate that: (1) 40.1% of the studies relate to the management field, which percentage increased significantly after 2015; (2) the dispersion of the studied themes confirms the plurality of Amazonian environmental wealth, but their lack of integration represents a constraint to the development of public policies; (3) market and public policies are both powerful but conflicting innovation drivers; (4) although studies on innovations address greenhouse gas emissions, innovation also includes forest degradation activities; and (5) there are different drivers and applications behind initiatives in technology and innovation, which depend on the local context. This qualitative study includes nine semi-structured interviews with cybersecurity experts from different security-related organizations who are familiar with cybersecurity exercises. Its contribution to cybersecurity workforce development focuses on organizational learning rather than individual skills development and relevant competencies. It was found that the utilization of thematic analysis methods develop individual readiness and expertise. It also enhances the maturity of an organization's processes, roles, communication, and exercise capabilities. Moreover, the exercises increase social trust between individuals and organizations through business-to-business cooperation. However, there were several barriers and challenges in utilizing learned skills and competencies within an organization, including a need to increase the capacity of staff members who participate in the exercise.

Les grandes entreprises évoluent dans un environnement social, climatique, économique et désormais sanitaire, complexe et incertain qui remet en cause le déterminisme mécanique et la logique cartésienne. A cela, s’ajoute une 4ème révolution industrielle. Pour survivre, elles doivent donc évoluer et accroitre leur capacité d’innovation. La majorité des études existantes se sont alors concentrées sur l’innovation technologique, négligeant la dimension non technologique de l’innovation, couramment nommée : « innovation organisationnelle ». Pourtant, cette dernière permet aux grandes entreprises de prendre en compte un ensemble de facteurs qui favorisent leur capacité d’innovation et l’ancre dans leurs routines. L’objectif est alors, grâce à une approche systémique et transdisciplinaire, d’identifier ces facteurs, que nous nommons « capacités d’Innovation Organisationnelle ». Elles regroupent les capacités dynamiques de l’entreprise ainsi que les antécédents de l’innovation organisationnelle. En effet, bien souvent l’innovation non technologique est perçue comme un concept flou et hétéroclite. Il apparait donc nécessaire de doter les entreprises de modèles, méthodes et d’outils qui permettent de rendre le concept concret et opérationnel. Néanmoins, de nos jours, la modélisation d’entreprise présente des limites pour d’une part, la représentation d’une grande entreprise que nous assimilons à un système« Organique » sociotechnique complexe et ouvert et d’autre part pour la représentation et pilotage des capacités d’Innovation Organisationnelle. Ainsi, dans le cadre d’une convention CIFRE avec l’entreprise SNCF Réseau, le laboratoire IMS de l’Université de Bordeaux et le laboratoire Icube de l’Université de Strasbourg, nous proposons un cadre conceptuel de la grande entreprise, de l’innovation organisationnelle ainsi qu’une démarche d’analyse et de préconisation des capacités d’Innovation Organisationnelle, basée sur notre propre modèle de l’innovation organisationnelle pour une grande entreprise.Ce travail de thèse a donc abouti à l’élaboration d’un méta-modèle qui permet à la grande entreprise d’avoir une vision systémique d’elle-même dans le but d’améliorer sa capacité d’innovation. Le modèle se compose de trois systèmes « Organisation-Territoire- Réseau d’acteurs, » et permet de mettre en évidence les capacités d’Innovation Organisationnelle au sein des systèmes dans une logique de caractérisation et de pilotage de celles-ci notamment grâce à l’évaluation de leurs impacts et de leurs priorités. Notre démarche repose sur une étude de cas basée sur une méthodologie quantitative multicritères.Au final, cette thèse est à l’origine de plusieurs contributions. Tout d’abord, le décloisonnement des sciences nous permet d’étudier les antécédents de l’innovation organisationnelle liées au territoire, et aux réseaux d’acteurs, au-delà des approches classiques qui privilégient en général les antécédents internes à l’organisation. Ensuite, nous concédons une place centrale aux dimensions humaines et sociales qui s’avèrent essentielles tout comme l’est une meilleure compréhension de leurs interactions à la fois formelles et informelles (ex : culture d’entreprise, climat social, connaissances, leadership…). Enfin, l’étude de l’impact des capacités d’Innovation Organisationnelle que nous proposons n’a jamais été réalisée auparavant pour une grande entreprise (des travaux sur les PME existent). Ainsi, la capacité d’innovation d’une grande entreprise est dépendante des interactions entre le territoire, les systèmes qui le composent, ses réseaux d’acteurs et les systèmes socio technique de l’organisation. The study aimed to analyze which are the best corporate environmental strategies to foster the innovation power of companies in the mining sector. The methodology used was the quantitative approach through multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the power of innovation and to see how the interrelationship between pressures and incentives can influence companies in the implementation of the sustainability strategy which resulted in five different models. The results show that different environmental strategies foster, in different ways, the power of innovation of companies in the analyzed mineral sector. Therefore, it became evident that cost reduction and adaptation to a strong regulatory environment are strategies capable of promoting external guidance and the transparency of innovation processes. Second, the search for reducing environmental impacts and adapting to a strong regulatory environment are strategies that strengthen knowledge of the business environment. In addition, the results show that leadership in products and processes can be optimized through strategies to reduce costs and environmental impacts. Finally, Autonomy and market leadership in relation to innovative initiatives can be achieved via cost reduction, incorporation of social and environmental guidelines, and adaptation to a strong regulatory environment. Thus, this study contributes to the theory and practice of innovation as it reveals to be the best corporate strategy capable of fostering the innovation power of companies in the mineral sector.

This study aims to contribute to the knowledge-based economy by investigating the role of green knowledge management on green organizational performance, where green technological, strategical, and process innovation is used as a mediating variable, and green organizational culture is used as a moderating variable. This model is assessed and analyzed under the lens of the resource base view theory. To fulfill the objective of this study, PLS-SEM is employed to assess and measure the model, and data were collected from the 384 managerial positions working in manufacturing and service organizations using the convenient sampling technique. The results depict that all the direct and indirect null hypotheses are rejected at a 5% level of significance, except the direct impact of green process innovation on green organizational performance. Moreover, green organizational culture strengthens green organizational performance with green technological, process, and strategic innovation. This study provides the mechanism of knowledge creation, application, and diffusion to enhance economic competitiveness by using knowledge-driven strategies. These strategies help manage the knowledge to foster innovative processes to improve an organization’s sustainable performance.

Purpose The purpose of study is to explore the linkage between emotional ownership and technological innovation in family firms. How emotional ownership is associated with technological innovation in FSMEs remains unaddressed. Scholars agree that emotional ownership plays a crucial role for family small to medium enterprises (FSMEs), leading to increased knowledge exchange and their ability to implement technological innovation. Yet, little is known about the effect of the emotional and cognitive side of ownership on FSME’s ability to manage knowledge and technologically innovate. Design/methodology/approach Applying attachment and social identity theory, this paper explores the gap by collecting data from 758 Italian FSMEs. It theorizes that family belongingness and family attachment ensure a valuable perspective of continuity and innovation. Findings The results reveal the effective leverage of emotional ownership in technological innovation. FSMEs are emotionally engaged and so develop a strong innovative technological orientation. Originality/value The findings reveal how to make an FSME’s organizational environment more innovative with implications of theory and practice. FSME’s ability to leverage internal emotions and collaborations is essential for technological innovation.

Despite rural regions cover a significant portion of the world's land, they remain overlooked entities within scholarly discourse as well as in a broader socio-economic context. However, their integration into sustainable development efforts is gaining relevance and should be considered as a strategic priority. This paper presents a research framework to identify determinants for Smart Technology adoption in rural regions. The main goal is to support organizations in rural areas to better understand and analyse the challenges with a scientific focus. It is expected to contribute to unlock new opportunities for innovative solutions, as well as to improve performance and enhance business sustainability in their unique context. The framework results from the combination and in-context interpretation of three different theories to define integrated strategic solutions: Diffusion of Innovation theory (DOI), Technology Organizations-Environment (TOE) framework, and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This approach ideally provides support to mixed methods to enable research in fact within real organizational contexts. Such a conceptual asset is expected to contribute in practice by facilitating (i) the formulation of theories as a response to open research issues, (ii) the development of appropriate integrated strategies, and (iii) the identification of major determinants to establish a consistent road map. The combination of chosen theories contributes to better investigating the causes of the research problem through a set of factors targeting the technology adoption in the rural context, providing a clear insight into solutions for decision-makers.

In today’s competitive environment, it is widely accepted that knowledge is a key strategic resource. Nevertheless, to be a source of competitive advantage, the knowledge embedded in individuals must be transformed into organizational knowledge. This chapter defends the idea that this process can happen in work teams, but only if they have the necessary characteristics to be considered communities of practice. These characteristics are: self-managed teams whose members have individual autonomy, heterogeneous and complementary skills, a common understanding, with a leader that encourages work teams and a climate of trust which favors knowledge management.

This study investigates the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption on the sustainable performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Employing a hybrid quantitative approach, this research combines Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to examine the influence of various organizational, technological, and external factors on AI adoption. Key factors considered include top management support, employee capability, customer pressure, complexity, vendor support, and relative advantage. Data collected from 305 SMEs across multiple sectors were analyzed. The results reveal that all the proposed factors significantly and positively affect AI adoption, with top management support, employee capability, and relative advantage being the most influential predictors. Additionally, the adoption of AI technologies substantially enhances the economic, social, and environmental performance of SMEs, reflecting improvements in operational efficiency, cost reduction, and social value creation. The ANN results confirm the robustness of the SEM findings, highlighting the critical role of AI in driving sustainability outcomes. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the positive mediation effects of AI adoption on organizational performance, indicating that AI adoption serves as a key enabler in achieving both short-term operational gains and long-term sustainability objectives. This research contributes to the understanding of AI’s transformative role in enhancing the sustainable performance of SMEs in developing economies, offering strategic insights for both policymakers and business leaders. While environmental social governance (ESG) and technological innovation are important foundations for corporate sustainability, how ESG activities and technological innovation impact corporate sustainability remains limited in the current literature. This study therefore examined the relationship between corporate sustainability, ESG activities and technological innovation through the moderating role of green operational innovation. To achieve the aims of this study, primary data were collected from 488 respondents of mobile app platform users for hypothesis testing. The collected data were analyzed using statistical analysis such as SPSS and AMOS. Findings show that ESG activities and technological innovation are related to corporate sustainability. This study finds green operational innovation to positively moderates the relationship between ESG, technological innovation, and corporate sustainability. This study further affirms that corporate sustainability can benefit from ESG activities, while green operational innovation can contribute to sustainable corporate growth and promote technological innovation activities. The originality of this study lies in the evidence that ESG activities, technological innovation, and green operational innovation are important factors that drive firms’ sustainable growth.

Invention is a core component of innovation, but it is not the same as innovation, and the inventor does not have to be party to, or involved in any way in the subsequent innovation that exploits their invention. The two are separate processes with innovation dependent on invention but invention not being dependent upon innovation. Invention is dependent upon creativity, novelty and utility and so questions are asked about the role of creativity in invention and how this is influenced by circumstance and the different classes and origins of opportunity that drive subsequent innovation and whether innovation is wholly research dependent? The chapter also addresses how innovation is best categorised, given a multitude of approaches and parties engaged in its delivery; what institutional factors influence success, and why is priority given to product and process innovation when the economies of so many advanced nations are service-based?

Exploring a robust and universal appeal bibliometric indicator for assessing creativity is essential but challenging. The novelty measure of innovation proposed by Uzzi et al. (NoveltyU) has sparked considerable interest and debate. Thus, further validation and understanding of its portfolio form of novelty and scope of application are necessary. This paper delves into the calculation and application of the NoveltyU method to shed light on its effectiveness and scope. Analysis of the calculation process reveals that journal pairs with higher novelty often span independent fundamental areas, while those with lower novelty tend to focus on similar and applied fields. Utilizing collaboration patterns between institutions, as discussed in our prior study (Fan et al., Scientometrics 125:1179–1196, 2020), offers insight into the method’s performance in real-world contexts. Results consistently show higher mean NoveltyU values in MM pattern over time, affirming the method’s validity. Categorizing papers into high conventional, low conventional, low novel, and high novel categories unveils higher overlap degree of terms among different patterns in high novel papers. Moreover, leading terms in MM pattern exhibit specific information, while delay terms tend to be more general, and simultaneous terms are even more so. These findings offer valuable insights into identifying hot and frontier topics, bolstering the credibility and application potential of the NoveltyU method, aligning with the broader objective of establishing valid measures of innovativeness in research.

Although the foundational works of ecosystem research recognized the central role of innovation, the current scholarship lacks a more systemic, systemized understanding of how innovation processes take place in ecosystem settings. This lack of a dominant framework that bridges innovation processes and ecosystem fields risks leading to a situation in which crucial problems at the intersection of these two fields remain poorly investigated. Through a systematic literature review, we made a case for rediscovering how these two branches of knowledge can be bridged. As an initial step, we consolidate the literature on these intersections, profile the studies that initially began to establish a bridge between ecosystem and innovation processes, propose a tentative framework for integrating both literatures, and set an agenda for further studies.

Innovation is the process of exploration, assimilation, and transformation of new and old knowledge for generating new unique value-adding products and processes, leading to superior firm performance through value creation and appropriation by the innovating firm. While extant innovation studies have focused on the impact of innovation on either value creation or value appropriation, studies analyzing both aspects together are under-explored. Establishing a linkage between value creation and appropriation requires understanding the various stimulus which catalyze the innovation process in a business firm. The studies limited themselves to either at country level, industry level, or firm level. This study focuses to bridge this gap by exploring the impact of innovation on both value creation and value appropriation, and also understand how the three levels influence each other's innovation output.

The new paradigm of digitalization represents disruptive changes for organizations around the world. Companies are facing with highly intense competition. In order to survive and achieve sustainable competition advantage, strategic innovation management becomes essential. In this regard, one of the most significant issues is to design and apply a model that includes a clear roadmap to implement innovation principles and activities to ensure innovation capability and performance of businesses. The first part of the chapter presents state-of-the-art literature on existing innovation management terminologies and models. The other parts provide a semi-structured corporate innovation system (CIS) model and its dimensions. The proposed semi-structured CIS model is articulated in terms of the model dimensions and their instantiations along the rich associated experiences gained via best practices of the successful nationwide innovation program. The proposed CIS is a holistic model that creates value by establishing strategic, cultural, and organizational infrastructure for innovation management. The CIS model provides a roadmap from initial evaluations of innovation performance and strategy formulation to implementation. Besides, the model enables us to customize the roadmap based on six dimensions and 20 key target indicators according to company needs and structure. It is a unique model as it aims to establish a system based on the requirements and readiness of organizations.

Strong innovation drives enhanced competitiveness in a country, which can only be attained through investments in research and technology. Nevertheless, Brazilian firms deal with incremental innovation in terms of process innovation, design modifications, and product suitability to local market conditions. In addition, despite legislative changes and previous investments, Brazil’s ranking on the Global Index of Innovation (GII) fell from 47th in 2011 to 69th in 2017. This study examines the processes and activities that incorporate laws, norms, and cultures. It identifies the barriers researchers in Brazilian public universities face when trying to turn an invention into an innovation to determine the key features of these barriers and provide guidelines for overcoming them. Small-scale semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 key individuals in organizations involved with innovation at the university – and its limits. Data was subjected to content analysis, and the findings were consolidated based on grounded theory. Results indicate that cultural differences are the most important factor, followed by people’s lack of knowledge about the laws, norms, and policies that support innovation in public universities. Accordingly, the study offers guidelines to help manage barriers to turning inventions into innovations, including structuring the processes and activities to integrate Brazilian laws, norms, and culture, as well as connecting people and institutions to provide various technology transfer solutions.

The role of external parties in the innovation efforts has received much attention on the firm-level, but there are less studies on open innovation projects. This is surprising, since projects are frequently used to carry out open innovation activities. In this study, a systematic literature review was conducted to provide a framework for managing open innovation initiatives. The results revealed several key themes that were further grouped—based on their interrelatedness—into the management of knowledge sharing, openness, actors, and results. A closer look at the considerations showed that the management of open innovation projects requires balancing several contradictory effects and handling both the contingencies and complementarities of the subject matter. The management further becomes complex due to the multiple actors involved and their different roles. To this end, we outlined several practical implications for managers of open innovation projects to consider and recommended avenues for further research.

This chapter aims to demonstrate the significant connections between innovation and creativity, innovation and the culture of quality management, and creativity and the culture of quality management globally as a response to the Crisis and Post-Crisis Period. Since issues related to innovation, creativity, quality, and quality management have recently attracted more attention than other topics globally, considering psychological factors was of great importance, too. The methodology of the research involved collecting data and information about innovation, creativity, and ISO standards application globally, in higher-income, medium-income developing, and low-income developing countries. The main finding of this study is that there are relationships between innovation and creativity, between innovation and ISO standards application, and between quality management and creativity. The main conclusion of the study is that quality management, which reflects and refers to the notion of exceeding customer expectations by enhancing the quality of goods and services, is correlated with culture, innovation, and creativity as a response to the Crisis and Post-Crisis Period.

Resumo O objetivo principal do presente estudo é entender quais critérios influenciam o processo decisório de seleção das melhores startups em inovação por um fundo de venture capital, na visão dos investidores, profissionais de fundos de venture capital e empreendedores de startups entrevistados. Apresentamos algumas ideias sobre as características das principais cidades que promovem inovação e os ideais do modernismo e do modernismo crítico (Habermas) e do pensamento criativo (Einstein). As entrevistas confirmaram diversas relações entre as hipóteses encontradas na literatura sobre teoria organizacional. Achados como os ambientes pós-burocráticos (Heckscher) e a proposta de adhocracia de Mintzberg (1995), assim como a Teoria da Escolha Racional de Herbert Simon (1987) e seus estudos sobre o processo decisório nas organizações pelo reconhecimento de padrões cognitivos pelos decididores, foram corroborados pela análise das entrevistas. Foram elaboradas entrevistas semiestruturadas (nove, no total) com profissionais de fundos de venture capital, empreendedores de startups e investidores com alguma experiência no mercado em questão. A importância do tema resiliência organizacional também foi ressaltada, e, no fim, sugere-se o estudo sobre a abertura de novos espaços de criação de startups e inovação, como a Station F, em Paris, França, o espaço La Nave, em Madri, e o projeto Porto Maravilha, no Rio, e de centros urbanos de inovação, como a Vila Olímpia e a Avenida Paulista, em São Paulo.

This study aims to understand the criteria that influence the decision-making process of selecting startups that have innovated successfully. In this article, this kind of selection was made by venture capital enterprises. We studied the view of the investors, venture capital professionals, and startup entrepreneurs interviewed. We present the actual global characteristics of the main cities where innovation takes place and the modernism and critical modernism aspects and creative thinking beliefs (Einstein, Habermas). The qualitative research was carried out using an exploratory approach and case study methodology based on semi-structured interviews (nine in total) with professionals from venture capital funds, startup entrepreneurs, and investors. The interviews confirmed several relationships between theories found in the business management literature. Findings such as post-bureaucratic environments (Heckscher), Mintzberg’s (1995) Adhocracy, and Simon’s decision-making process (1987) for pattern recognition were corroborated by the analysis of the interviews. We present some initiatives for innovation such as Station F in France, El Espacio La Nave, Madrid, the Project Porto Maravilha in Rio, and Vila Olimpia e Paulista avenue, São Paulo.

Purpose Given that women around the world face more exclusion in terms of limited access to economic and innovation activities than men do, it is understandable that some female-led start-ups in weak institutional environments engage in bribery to help reduce the difficulties they encounter in the face of intense business competition. However, the link between bribery and product innovation performance is unclear. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between bribery and product innovation performance for female-led start-ups, as well as the roles of institutional support and self-control in this link. Design/methodology/approach This empirical study evaluates survey data from female-led manufacturing start-ups in China's Yangtze River Delta region to investigate the relationship between bribery and product innovation performance. Findings This research shows that bribery has an inverted U-shaped impact on product innovation performance in female-led manufacturing start-ups, meaning that the product innovation performance of these firms initially increases but then decreases as the bribery intensity (i.e. the frequency and amount of bribes) increases. The authors also focus on the roles of institutional support and self-control in this link, where the authors find that this relationship is steeper for firms with strong institutional support, as well as for individual female entrepreneurs who have high levels of self-control. Practical implications The findings of this study indicate that policymakers should undertake efforts to improve institutional quality (e.g. increasing clarity around decisions, providing more institutional support, etc.) and to guide female entrepreneurs to cultivate higher levels of self-control, as such efforts would reduce the appeal of, and the opportunity for, bribery. Originality/value To date, very few studies focus specifically on female-led enterprises in the field of bribery research. The research findings presented here on the effect of bribery in female-led start-ups on firm product innovation performance are useful to researchers, policymakers and businesspeople, as they provide a better understanding of bribery in female-led start-ups in China, which can also be extrapolated to encompass other transition economy contexts.

Supply chains withstand multiple tensions, and some of which are paradoxical. Radical product and process innovations bring such tensions to the forefront by disrupting supply chains. Using two illustrations, this article considers the paradoxical tension between change and stability in upstream supply chains, which becomes particularly salient after radical innovation. Furthermore, the article discusses why and how paradox theory can help firms understand and manage this pressing tension between stability and change. This article then presents future research opportunities for using paradox theory to investigate other persistent post‐innovation tensions in upstream supply chains. The aim of this article is to encourage new studies that develop responses to such paradoxical tensions, an area ripe for research.

While this research largely focuses on the context of sustainability and businesses model innovation (BMI) from different aspects of business, relatively few studies conduct in-depth analysis of what key capabilities a firm needs to achieve BMI. Meanwhile, innovation policy is accounting for issues relating to business development as a tool for improving competitiveness at macro level, but little has been discussed in what way it influences on firms. This study therefore first identifies corporate key capabilities that are required towards BMI, and then adopts innovation policy as a moderator to examine its indirect effect on BMI outcomes. A structured questionnaire was designed and 287 valid samples were collected from a population comprised of 948 listed companies on Taiwan Stock Exchange. Hypotheses were tested using the structural equation modelling (SEM) in SPSS for direct path analysis and Process for indirect effects. The outcome shows that three key capabilities, including Architecture, Reputation and Innovation, are crucial for a firm to accumulate over time in reaching BMI. The findings also indicate that innovation policy can be a significant external support for firms to accelerate BMI only if they develop three key capabilities simultaneously. The results of this study may assist public authorities and company managers with a useful guideline to make relevant policies and govern businesses.

Plain English Summary Is there a link between democracy and entrepreneurship? This study provides the first systematic empirical evidence that the link actually exists. By using longitudinal data from 23 countries over the 1972–2010 period, we document that democracy is conducive to entrepreneurship. Not only transitions to democracy, but also changes in the intensity of democracy affect entrepreneurial activity. How can democracy foster entrepreneurship? We show that the promotion of freedom and social interchange, which facilitate the creation and the diffusion of knowledge, and the pursuit of civil society participation in political processes, which enhances institutional trust, are two channels driving the positive effect. We also find that entrepreneurship is sensitive to both contemporaneous and historical level of democratization. By providing the first evidence that entrepreneurship is directly connected to democracy, our findings make an important contribution to the entrepreneurship literature. Not only does entrepreneurship matter, but in particular, it is the result of vibrant democracy. If we want entrepreneurship to prosper, there is a need to preserve and nurture democracy.

Increased competitive pressure requires companies to increase their own innovative capacity. In particular, innovation management must identify and analyze the external dimensions of influence that affect the product. Although large amounts of text data are available for this purpose, there is yet no possibility of evaluating them in a structured way and linking the information obtained with each other in order to generate knowledge about the product environment. The presented method enables the derivation of innovation potentials from these text data. First, the external dimensions of influence that affect the product and are thus relevant for the innovation process are identified. Each influence dimension also defines data sources that can be used for the analysis. When analyzing the document collection from the data sources, applications from the field of text mining extract the topic areas of the available documents. Finally, a semantic network links the knowledge gained and shows the dependency of the identified topics in order to generate knowledge about future innovation potentials. The method was validated with a use-case from the sports equipment industry.

Cloud computing is the next generation of on-demand information technology services and products that deliver various applications over the Internet. Cloud computing is often adopted as a superior alternative by data centers to replace their current system. However, cloud computing services are still accompanied by many issues which hinder their adoption in data centers. Therefore, this study proposed a Cloud Computing Data Center (CCDC) adoption model for administration activities in higher education institutions. Technology Organization Environment (TOE), Diffusion of Innovation theory (DOI), and Institutional theory were considered as theoretical bases of CCDC model. A new Structural Equation Modelling (SEM)-STELLA method was applied to examine the proposed model and simulate it like a real system to investigate the respondents' interest in adopting cloud by passing the time. A questionnaire instrument was designed, and data were collected from 204 decision-makers at Malaysian universities. The results showed that eight out of ten factors, namely relative advantage, Complexity, compatibility, top management support, policy and standardization, competitive pressure, outage, and security influenced CCDC adoption. Finally, STELLA simulated the value changing of some factors or sub factors on the level of interest in adopting CCDC. Results showed that security and policy play the highest influence on the adoption of cloud computing. This research contributes to a theoretical understanding of factors that influence CCDC adoption. Meanwhile, it provides a better understanding of changes in users' behavior during the adoption of cloud computing services.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the effects of temporary workers and works councils on process innovations at manufacturing sites. The impact of temporary workers, commonly viewed as a means of operational flexibility and cost savings, on firms’ ability to innovate is underexplored. Works councils represent and help integrate temporary workers, but are often equated with unions, which have been criticized as barriers to innovation, especially in the US. Design/methodology/approach The authors use secondary data collected by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) of the German Federal Employment Agency. Specifically, the authors conduct a series of regression analyses using 11-year panel data covering the period 2009–2019 with 11,641 manufacturing site-year observations. Findings The results suggest that the use of temporary workers initially promotes process innovation, but at too high a level, it impairs firms’ ability to innovate. Furthermore, the results suggest that works councils have a positive impact on innovation and dampen the curvilinear effect found with respect to temporary workers. Originality/value Research has largely focused on the cost and flexibility benefits of temporary workers. The authors analyze the effectiveness of temporary workers in terms of innovativeness. By including works councils, the study also consider the contextual environment in which temporary workers are employed. Finally, the results reject the assumption that works councils have a similar negative impact as unions on innovation; in fact, the authors find the opposite.

To develop the next generation of healthcare innovators, students at all levels of education should be trained and encouraged to employ innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to deal with complicated challenges of today's health system. Applying innovation and entrepreneurship training to solve complex problems and focus on solution design has recently become common in medical universities all over the world. This paper clarifies the role of hackathons as an innovative educational approach in healthcare education systems. We propose a process model concerned with organizing hackathon events in the healthcare education system. This model can be used in the academic and practical design of hackathons for innovation purposes.

Despite scholarly attention on family firm innovation, sources of heterogeneity in family firm innovation remain veiled. Drawing upon the mixed gamble perspective, this study introduces and examines a contingency that affects the level of family-owned firms’ innovativeness: inter-organizational cooperation. Based on the idea that inter-organizational cooperation affects family-owned firms’ mixed gamble on innovation, we hypothesize that inter-organizational cooperation mitigates the negative relationship between family ownership and firm’s innovativeness and that the moderating effect varies contingent on the types of cooperative partner and activity. The hypotheses are examined in a sample of 1211 small and medium enterprises in South Korea. The results offer insight into variation in family firm innovation. Our results show that inter-organizational cooperation, especially with non-commercial organizations, is associated with higher levels of innovation. Findings support the idea that family business owners cooperate with external partners as a way to mitigate potential SEW losses often associated with strategic risk. By using a sample of Korean SMEs, we respond to calls in family business research to examine contexts beyond Western countries. Additional contributions, limitations, and future research directions are also discussed.

Innovation is an investment in future growth and development, and it is critical for family businesses to maintain a competitive advantage. Different types of innovation inputs have different uncertainties, advantages, and risks. Product innovation and process innovation are two distinct types of innovation that necessitate significantly different organizational resource allocation and risk taking. Ownership is the source of decision-making authority, and the dispersion of intra-family ownership influence goal preferences, risk taking, and resource allocation. We investigate the effect of intra-family ownership dispersion on the decision preferences of two unique types of innovation inputs by distinguishing between product and process innovations. The greater the concentration of ownership within the family, the more likely it is that the proportion of product innovation input is higher than the proportion of process innovation input. We further discuss the moderating effects of both the proportion of family directors and collective decision-making mode on the different innovation input decisions by family firms. Using a sample of 882 Chinese small- and medium-sized family firms from the 2015 All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, we find support for these proposed relationships. The implications of these findings extend to both family business and innovation research.

We take stock of 50 years of research on the management of technical innovation with a focus on identifying the actions that managers take when leading technical innovation. Through synthesizing both quantitative and qualitative studies, we categorize these actions into 11 leader functions and describe their relationships with technical innovation. We also develop a parsimonious framework to organize the widely varying criteria used to measure technical innovation, as well as the processes linking leader functions with these criteria. Finally, we offer recommendations for future research that follow from this framework.

Coatings are widely used in a range of aesthetic, protective and durable applications, often leading to extension of the in-service period of many components. There is sizable demand for coatings in the transport sector across road, rail, marine and air. However, the issue of materials circularity with consideration of their surface treatment is an under researched and often overlooked area. The aim of this paper is to explore challenges and enabling factors that can catalyse industrial growth of a new material, technology, or process by investigating coatings within the transport sector. We do this by studying six new or novel approaches that have garnered significant research interest in the last decade, set against system-level drivers and enablers of circularity. Our findings highlight the complications, assumptions and benefits of a circular transition. We conclude that policy and regulation play a key role in supporting or hindering the transition, and further consideration of material ‘lock-in’ is required to understand how materials can be phased out from a design standpoint.
