The Checkers Game installation wanted to create a space for reflection on issues that focused on the violation of human rights, particularly the violation of women's rights. For the development of the project, the reality to be contemplated was delimited and, in this sense, an illustration of the framework of feminism in the Portuguese context of the late 19th and 20th centuries was drawn up. The installation interface, which merged the real world with the virtual world, since the tangible component of the installation platform consists of a cube and four game pieces and it is combined with a digital component, that consists of two projections associated with the sound element that prevail during the performance. This interactive installation assumes the participation of two participants who interact with each other and a computer system, that truck the participants movements activating a set of choices and actions and/or images corresponding to a previously established narrative sequence. This sensory component is achieved using a computer vision system. The computer applications implemented use the Processing language together with the OPENCV, Serial and ESS libraries. This empirical study employed a multimethodological framework known as the Development Methodology. The adopted methodology consisted of carrying out four interaction sessions, followed by the completion of an interaction assessment questionnaire.

The text presents, briefly, a few ideas that have significantly increased the interest for the study of narrative in the past two decades. Such interest has not been limited to the traditional field of studying literary genre. On the contrary, more and more human cognition researchers have been looking, in the study of narrative, for elements that lead us to understand and uncover the mechanisms that are intrinsic to human thought. This has led specialists in all areas (psychology, neurology, literature, linguistics, semiotics, communication) to dedicate themselves to the systematic study of narrative, both written and oral, produced by children, young people or adults. The publication of research papers that associate narrative to forms of thought, considering it as responsible for the process of constructing and representing human thought, has demonstrated there is a lot to be known about narrative thought. The new perspective opened by such studies puts narrative studies on the order of the day and brings new meaning to their social value.

Contemporary Art: A Very Short Introduction presents a radical analysis of the global art scene. Contemporary art has never been so popular—but the art world is changing. Today, there is growing interest in questions over the nature and use of contemporary art, and over who controls its future. This VSI studies how new regions and nations, such as China, have leapt into astonishing prominence, overturning the old Euro-American dominance. It also examines the powerful influence of big business and the super-rich on the art world, and the reinvention of artists and museums as brands.

Computer and video games are a maturing medium and industry and have caught the attention of scholars across a variety of disciplines. By and large, computer and video games have been ignored by educators. When educators have discussed games, they have focused on the social consequences of game play, ignoring important educational potentials of gaming. This paper examines the history of games in educational research, and argues that the cognitive potential of games have been largely ignored by educators. Contemporary developments in gaming, particularly interactive stories, digital authoring tools, and collaborative worlds, suggest powerful new opportunities for educational media.

In this paper I will consider the relationships between the cognitive processes that allow listeners to infer increases or decreases in tension when listening to tonal music and those through which it is possible to hear a piece of tonal music as a narration.

The popular notion of identification with characters in drama is examined, and its usefulness in explaining emotional reactivity to drama is questioned. The concept of empathy is developed as an alternative, and its usefulness is demonstrated. Empathy theory is reviewed, and selected supportive findings are presented. Reflexive, acquired, and deliberate forms of empathy are distinguished as motor mimicry, empathy proper, and perspective taking. Special attention is given to conditions under which empathy reverses to counterempathy. The development of affective dispositions toward characters featured in drama is considered crucial, and the dynamics of character development are examined in terms of dispositional consequences. Empathic reactions are linked to positive affective dispositions and counterempathic reactions to negative affective dispositions. Emotional involvement with drama is explained on the basis of dispositionally controlled empathy and counterempathy.

This article reports results from a series of empirical studies exploring narrative dimensions of adventure and role-play in computer-game design. It identifies aspects of narrative employed in such games, considers the significance of narrative structures and devices in increasing user-engagement, and reflects on game-design implications.Because not all approaches identified in traditional narrative theory can be applied to the new, interactive media, a phenomenological, reader-response methodology was used in the studies to identify narrative considerations appropriate to game-players' experiences. In two model focus-group studies, evaluative responses to games played in a controlled environment were analyzed. From the factors identified as affecting engagement, those with narrative aspects were isolated and their significance assessed. Among the factors identified are characterization, identification, agency, motivation, plot, linearity, and authorial control. Also considered is the disruption of primal narrative features of narrative--causality, temporality, and linearity--within a hyper-structure, and a number of design techniques and strategies to resolve such tensions and promote user engagement are suggested.
