Introduction
ProfessorJohnLanderHarperCBE,FRS(b.May27,1925–d.March22,2009)revolutionizedplantecologyandhadperhapsa
greaterimpactonitsdevelopmentasamodernsciencethananyotherecologistinthe20thcentury.RaisedonafarminRugby,
England,HarperdidhisundergraduateandgraduatedegreesinOxford.HethenspentnineyearsasalecturerattheDepartment
ofAgriculture,and,in1960,hewasappointedheadofagriculturalbotanyattheUniversityCollegeofNorthWales,Bangor.He
servedaspresidentoftheBritishEcologicalSocietyin1966–1967andoftheEuropeanSocietyforEvolutionaryBiologyfrom
1993to1995;hewaselectedaFellowoftheRoyalSocietyin1978.Hetaughtusanentirelynewdisciplineandanentirelynew
waytostudyplantsbychangingthewaywethinkaboutvegetation;insteadofbeingrelativelystatic,vegetationwasviewedasa
dynamicsystemofplantpopulations,inastateofcontinuousflux,basedonbirthanddeathsofindividuals.Almostsingle
handedlyhepioneeredtheestablishmentofthefieldofplantpopulationecology.Bybringingpopulationbiologyandexperimental
approachestotheforefrontofplantecology,helinkeddemographyandselectionand,therefore,ecologyandevolution.Harper’s
ideasarenowsocentraltoplantecologythattheyhavebecomebasictoourwayofthinking.Hebegantoaskquestionsabout
plantpopulationsthatzoologistshadbeenaskingaboutanimalpopulationssinceatleastthe1930s.Althoughfacedwiththedual
difficultiesofplantplasticityandofhowtodefine“anindividualplant,”Harpernotonlyfoundwaysofansweringthesequestions,
butalsohepresentedtheanswersinawaythatconvincedusthatplantswereworthyofstudy;furthermore,plantpopulations
wereofteneasiertostudythananimalpopulationsbecausethey“standstillandwaittobecounted”(Harper1977,p.515,cited
underBooks:PopulationBiologyofPlants).TherepertoireofHarperianecologyincludedseedproduction,seedbanks,seed
dispersal,seeddormancy,seedsoilinteractions,seedlingrecruitment,effectsofneighbors,interference,populationregulation,
plantanimalinteractions,dynamicsofplantpopulations,demography,populationevolution,resourceallocation,andplantlife
histories.Hisupbringingonafarmandagriculturalbackgroundareclearlyreflectedinthesubjectsusedinmuchofhisresearch—
cropplants,grasses,andweeds—andthepastureatHenfaes,NorthWales,servedasthestudysiteforatleasttengraduate
studentsandoverseasvisitors.In1977HarperpublishedhismonumentalPopulationBiologyofPlants.

JohnLanderHarperwasbornonMay27,1925,intoafarmingfamily.HewaseducatedatLawrenceSheriffSchool,Rugby,
where,undertheenthusiasticleadershipofWilfredKings,hedevelopedadeepenthusiasmfornaturalhistory.Attheageof
thirteen,Harperobservedandcountedbuttercupsalongatransectacrossanundulatingpastureonhisfather’sfarm(Harper
1989).Henotedthatdifferentspeciesofbuttercupsgrewindifferentpartsofthepasture(personalcommunication).In1943he
enteredMagdalenCollege,Oxford,andgraduatedwithafirstclasshonorsinbotanyin1946,followedbyamaster’sdegreeanda
doctorateinphilosophyin1950,completedunderthesupervisionofDr.J.L.Harley.Harperwasthenappointedasa
demonstratoratOxfordUniversityin1951andpersonallyacknowledgesthatG.E.Blackmanwas“exceptionallysupportivein
helpingmetoacquiremyowngroupofD.Phil.students;G.R.SagarandI.H.McNaughtoncametomefromtheOxfordBotany
