Authors:

Abstract

Eduardo Mendoza's work has been divided into two thematic groups that he himself has accepted as valid: first, his so-called ‘serious works’, which include his well-known historical novels; second, his minor, works of parody. This article takes two of the works belonging to this second group (El laberinto de las aceitunas (1982) y Sin noticias de Gurb (1991)) to discuss how, through the problematization of thought, language and space, these works reflect the inconsistencies of reason in the Spanish postmodernity emerging during the Transición. To do this, this article will observe the insufficiency of Enlightenment (through Reason) that is present in the epistemological heritage of the narrators in these two novels.

The present article reviews, from a critical, theoretical standpoint, the 'semiotic of Culture' that leading colonialist Walter Mignolo undertook to construct in his early works. These works combined classical structuralism, which promotes an objective approach to literature, with its inverted, equally positivist counterpart, hermeneutics, which foregrounds the role of the subject. Both projects collapse at the point where they run up against the existence of an all-encompassing 'ideology'. Their underlying ahistorical, neo-Kantian idealism secretly nurtures a 'resistance to theory', based on a flawed philosophy of science. We play off this neo-Kantian idealism at all points against the critical realism of Althusserian Marxism, which theorizes the notion of an 'ideological unconscious'. On the latter's terms, as expounded by the Marxist scholar, Juan Carlos Rodriguez, not all ideological discourses operate, historically, through the category of the subject. The epic, essay and autobiography serve to illustrate the contrasting critical approaches under review.

The essay argues that modernity is best understood not as the cultural expression of capitalist modernization, but as a particular set of relations of present to past. It examines the varying attitudes toward the violent past of the civil war that have characterized Spain since the Franco dictatorship and continuing to the present day. The obsessive memorialization of the Nationalist war dead throughout the Franco dictatorship led, at the time of the transition to democracy, to a desire to break with the past; it was not, as is often argued, a determination to forget, but a decision not to let the past affect the future. Thus attempts toward the end of the Franco dictatorship to deal cinematically with this violent heritage were followed by a ten-year gap, until the appearance in the mid-1980s of a number of novels and films representing the civil war and their escalation since the late 1990s to create a memory boom, which has resulted in the publication of a large number of testimonies. The essay questions whether trauma theory, which has been so important in Holocaust studies, provides an adequate model for understanding the belated appearance of these memories, arguing that the reason is more likely to be a previous lack of willing interlocutors. Nevertheless, it concludes that the present urge to recount every detail of the past is less effective in communicating the horror of the war and its repression than are those accounts—in film at the end of the dictatorship and in fiction in the mid-1980s, with occasional more recent examples—which acknowledge the difficulty of narrativizing the violent past as well as the importance of transgenerational transmission.
