Implementing an advanced composition program with faculty from across the curriculum

For the past several years, Central Michigan University has staffed the advanced composition course required of all undergraduates with faculty from both the English department and also from other departments throughout the university. Central Michigan's experiences in developing a political constituency supportive of improving students' writing skills and in establishing faculty development workshops to assist faculty in preparing to teach this new advanced writing course are discussed. Further, the experiences of non-English faculty teaching this distinctive course are described. The impact of the writing program on other university units is reviewed. This successful program might provide a model for other universities.

INNOVATIVE TECHNIQUES OF CORRECTION OF DYSGRAPHY IN PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

There is a significant increase in the number of children who do not have developed writing and reading skills among primary school students. [Show full abstract] academic subjects, so the identification and correction of dysgraphy is one of the urgent problems. The article examines the writing process from a neuropsychological point of view and highlights the special stages of the writing process. The definitions given by the authors in connection with the violation of the writing process are analyzed, the classification of dysgraphy is briefly described, the importance of timely detection of violations of written speech and the development of appropriate correctional work taking into account the neuropsychological approach is emphasized, modern manifestations and promising areas of the study of dysgraphy are considered based on the analysis of theoretical sources. Defining the concept of "innovation", the significance of one of the innovative approaches to the correction of dysgraphy – the use of cerebellar stimulation-is described, that is, the models of performing exercises in the" balametrics " complex are shown. The article describes the methodology and results of the ascertaining and formative experience conducted on the basis of the analysis of errors that occur in the writing of primary school students studying in the Kazakh language.

CORPUS BASED ANALYSIS OF FIRST-PERSON PRONOUNS IN RESEARCH PROPOSALS WRITTEN BY RUSSIAN STUDENTS

Although displaying authorial stance is an inseparable component for Anglo-American academic writing tradition, it seems to be problematic for those who are at the beginning of their academic writing career. The use of first-person pronouns is the most vivid principle of moving from formality and objectivity to uncovering the authorial stance and thus to involving the reader into the discussion. ... [Show full abstract] The paper focuses on the way novice writers use first-person pronouns for self-positioning. A corpus of Research Proposals written by Russian students majoring in five different subjects has been analyzed to establish discourse functions of first-person pronouns used, as well as to identify what has the major influence on the use of pronouns for authorial stance: disciplinary field or traditions of Russian academic writing. The research showed that socio-cultural traditions in writing influence greatly the way the students explain their position: ‘polite we’ not only outnumbers ‘I’ occurrences, but could substitute it in violation of conventions; disciplinary differences in discourse and textual features of the first-person pronoun use are not very visible but still play a part in academic writing. The findings from this research have implications for EAP curricula developers.Key words: authorial stance, research proposal, self-positioning, academic genres.

[Show full abstract] teacher ratings of progress in the local writing curriculum. Hammill and Hresko (1994) conducted a similar study, but with only 76 students. The current sample of 147 third-and fifth-grade students from one school district in Michigan revealed corrected coefficients that ranged from .39 to .48. These were consistent with previous research, but offered only low to moderate support for the criterion-related validity relative to the local curriculum, and reinforced the need to examine the appropriateness of the TOWL-3 given the district's writing curriculum.

Student performance improved significantly during a series of four assignments, and improved writing skills were evident in the areas of focus, comprehensiveness, and clarity of writing. Over a period of 10 years, we have developed a sustainable process of online portfolio assessment that demonstrates both reliability and validity, using both qualitative and quantitative measures. The sustainable cycle is that, each semester, we assess a random sampling of the students' work that they have posted, as per our instructions, in an online portfolio. We achieved validity by a modi- fied online Delphi that led to a redefinition of the construct of technical communication itself; we achieved reliability by adjudication resulting in adjacent scores. The results of our assessment meet the requirements of ABET and result in a continual cycle of improvement for our technical communication curriculum. Results from three semesters show an improving correlation between the course grade and the overall, holistic portfolio score.

Pre-service teachers’ reflection on their efficacy beliefs in conducting action research

This paper attempts to discuss Filipino pre-service teachers’ reflections on their self-efficacy beliefs when they conduct action research as a culminating requirement for their degree. The study traces and identifies patterns to see possible consistencies or inconsistencies of the level of self-competence among the participants, as revealed by their self-reflections. This qualitative research ... [Show full abstract] involves 10 participants who were asked to write seven reflective journals each as they went through the various stages of doing action research. Using constant comparison, the researchers arrived at three themes guided by self-efficacy theory. Results reveal that previous performance accomplishments, perceptions toward the people they collaborated with, and their positive and negative emotions toward their various action research experiences are the sources of their self-efficacy beliefs. The results are worthy of being considered in improving the pre-service teaching curriculum, particularly the thesis component to which action research writing is included.
