Rapidly falling costs of battery packs for electric vehicles

Abstract

To properly evaluate the prospects for commercially competitive battery electric vehicles (BEV) one must have accurate information on current and predicted cost of battery packs. The literature reveals that costs are coming down, but with large uncertainties on past, current and future costs of the dominating Li-ion technology. This paper presents an original systematic review, analysing over 80 different estimates reported 2007-2014 to systematically trace the costs of Li-ion battery packs for BEV manufacturers. We show that industry-wide cost estimates declined by approximately 14% annually between 2007 and 2014, from above US$1,000 per kWh to around US$410 per kWh, and that the cost of battery packs used by market-leading BEV manufacturers are even lower, at US$300 per kWh, and has declined by 8% annually. Learning rate, the cost reduction following a cumulative doubling of production, is found to be between 6 and 9%, in line with earlier studies on vehicle battery technology. We reveal that the costs of Li-ion battery packs continue to decline and that the costs among market leaders are much lower than previously reported. This has significant implications for the assumptions used when modelling future energy and transport systems and permits an optimistic outlook for BEVs contributing to low-carbon transport.

Large-scale integration of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in distribution networks has the potential to enhance the utilization of photovoltaic (PV) power generation and mitigate the negative effects caused by electric vehicles (EV) fast charging behavior. This paper presents a novel deep reinforcement learning-based power scheduling strategy for BESS which is installed in an active distribution network. The network includes fast EV charging demand, PV power generation, and electricity arbitrage from main grid. The aim is to maximize the profit of BESS operator whilst maintaining voltage limits. The novel strategy adopts a Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TD3) algorithm and requires forecasted PV power generation and EV smart charging demand. The proposed strategy is compared with Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG), Particle Swarm Optimization and Simulated Annealing algorithms to verify its effectiveness. Case studies are conducted with smart EV charging dataset from Project Shift (UK Power Networks Innovation) and the UK photovoltaic dataset. The Internal Rate of Return results with TD3 and DDPG algorithms are 9.46% and 8.69%, respectively, which show that the proposed strategy can enhance power scheduling and outperforms the mainstream methods in terms of reduced levelized cost of storage and increased net present value.

With increasing environmental problems of fossil fuel-based devices and systems in societies, diffusion and adoption of sustainability solutions such as renewable energy technologies and hybrid/electric vehicles have increased in the residential and commercial sectors. However, energy demand in the buildings and energy supply from renewables are complex, dynamic, and non-linear. This complexity shows itself in cold-climate regions that the supply of required energy from renewables is along with uncertainties and even sometimes stochastic. This paper assesses the energy supply/demand performance of a group of residential buildings in a community in a cold-climate region, St. Albert, Canada. First, all the buildings of the community are modeled and the required energy to respond to the demand and electric vehicles are calculated. Then, the potential of each building for electricity supply via photovoltaic panels is calculated. Finally, the energy supply/demand management of the community is assessed using a machine learning tool. The results show that the community peak heating and cooling loads are 420 kW and 121 kW, respectively and the total annual energy production from photovoltaic system is 14,203 kWh for a single house. Regarding the electric vehicle load, the photovoltaic system can provide 29.23% of the community's total load, annually. Finally by comparing the modeled pattern and the predicted pattern, an accuracy of 88.6% is obtained for the prediction.

Decarbonising the transport sector in the Global South presents an opportunity to contribute towards achieving net-zero by mid-century. Several studies have modelled different pathways to decarbonise the transport system, but the consensus is unclear due to the heterogeneous nature of transport technologies, infrastructure, locations, and consumers. In this sense, this study applies a systematic quantitative review to investigate the progression of low carbon transport sector and identified how the sector can decarbonise in an increasingly carbon-constrained world. The results show that while scholarly outputs are taking an upward trend, the geographic distribution of studies is uneven, and the outcomes of decarbonisation vary across developing countries. The study reveals that the decarbonisation of the transport sector presents challenges that are associated with revenue generation, funding of transition policies, competition for alternative fuels, crowding out of low-income consumers and potential rebound effects on travel behaviour. Therefore, the decarbonisation of the transport sector requires special mechanisms that are monitored and adjusted over time. The study highlights key cost-effective options for the decarbonisation of the transport sector while identifying knowledge gaps in the existing literature for future studies.

Metal‐air batteries as alternatives to the existing lithium‐ion battery are becoming increasingly attractive sources of power due to their high energy‐cost competitiveness and inherent safety; however, their low oxygen evolution and reduction reaction (OER/ORR) performance and poor operational stability must be overcome prior to commercialization. Herein, it is demonstrated that a novel class of hydrothermally grown dual‐phase heterogeneous electrocatalysts, in which silver‐manganese (AgMn) heterometal nanoparticles are anchored on top of 2D nanosheet‐like nickel vanadium oxide (NiV2O6), allows an enlarged surface area and efficient charge transfer/redistribution, resulting in a bifunctional OER/ORR superior to those of conventional Pt/C or RuO2. The dual‐phase NiV2O6/AgMn catalysts on the air cathode of a zinc‐air battery lead to a stable discharge–charge voltage gap of 0.83 V at 50 mA cm−2, with a specific capacity of 660 mAh g−1 and life cycle stabilities of more than 146 h at 10 mA cm−2 and 11 h at 50 mA cm−2. The proposed new class of dual‐phase NiV2O6/AgMn catalysts are successfully applied as pouch‐type zinc‐air batteries with long‐term stability over 33.9 h at 10 mA cm−2. The noble dual‐phase heterogeneous electrocatalysts derived by sequential hydrothermal reactions enable an increased surface area and efficient charge transfer/redistribution, resulting in a superior bifunctional oxygen evolution and reduction reaction (OER/ORR). These findings indicate that dual‐phase heterogeneous electrocatalysts may provide a unique opportunity to improve the performance of rechargeable metal‐air battery applications.

This paper analyzes charging cost of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for different penetration levels of BEVs and for different charging strategies by taking into account their impact on the electricity sector. We analyze a multi-level equilibrium model, which incorporates endogenous generation capacity investment, network expansion, and congestion management. We calibrate our model for the German electricity sector in 2035 and consider different degrees of BEV penetration and various charging strategies: (i) non-smart charging based on a standard charging profile, (ii) smart charging, where the charging load can be shifted throughout the entire day to provide flexibility to the system, and (iii) a mixed charging strategy, where smart charging is only possible during night hours. Our final results reveal that larger BEV penetration yields lower CO2 emissions even in those scenarios with smaller availability of green electricity production. Furthermore, both charging cost and resulting CO2 emissions are substantially reduced for smarter charging strategies for all scenarios considered. Finally, even for scale deployment of BEVs, charging cost remains comparatively low. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of BEV adoption thus continues to crucially depend on the evolution of vehicle purchase prices.

Electric vehicles are capturing ever larger market shares of the new vehicle market in several large vehicle markets such as Europe and China. However, electric vehicles still only make up a small fraction of the total vehicle fleet. Much research has been focused on the perspective of existing or prospective adopters of Electric Vehicles. Less emphasis has been placed on intermediaries such as vehicle salespeople, who could be important mediators in the product matching process by providing helpful information, facilitating direct experience and directly influencing vehicle buyers' adoption decisions. This paper addresses this research gap using a qualitative investigation of vehicle salespeople at OEMs who sell both Electric Vehicles and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles on the Swedish market. Fifteen interviews with vehicle salespeople at leading OEMs were conducted in the fall of 2017. The results reveal that the sales process of vehicles is mainly focused on the sales of Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles. Electric Vehicles are treated as niche products which often require the vehicle buyer to initiate the sales process. It can be concluded that OEMs, dealerships and vehicle salespeople have taken relatively few steps to influence mainstream buyers to consider Electric Vehicles as an alternative to Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles at the point of sale. Possible reasons for the bias towards Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles can be found in the apparent lack of training and experience regarding Electric Vehicles among vehicle salespeople, more extended sales and delivery times for Electric Vehicles and a commission structure that often favours Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles.

Lithium-ion battery packs require thermal management to achieve optimum life and safety. This is becoming crucial for battery packs composed of high-energy-density cells. Pouch cells themselves achieve highest packaging efficiency but require additional structural support and thermal management when grouped into modules, especially under abusive conditions such as thermal runaway. Novel foam battery pads have demonstrated to cushion volume changes of pouch cells and are reengineered in this study to mitigate cell-to-cell thermal runaway propagation. The compressible pads are made of polyurethane foams incorporating flame-retardant additives or coatings, including intumescent and fire wall materials. Their performances were evaluated by conducting nail penetration tests on modules composed of pouch cells at 100% state of charge (SOC), with the foams placed in between the cells. Experimental results show cascading thermal runaway was considerably delayed by polyurethane foams incorporating flame-retardant additives or coatings. Complete prevention of cascading failure was achieved with dense polyurethane foams with multilayered coatings of both fire wall and intumescent materials.

Precise lifetime predictions for lithium‐ion cells are crucial for efficient battery development and thus enable profitable electric vehicles and a sustainable transformation towards zero‐emission mobility. However, limitations remain due to the complex degradation of lithium‐ion cells, strongly influenced by cell design as well as operating and storage conditions. To overcome them, a machine learning framework is developed based on symbolic regression via genetic programming. This evolutionary algorithm is capable of inferring physically interpretable models from cell aging data without requiring domain knowledge. This novel approach is compared against established approaches in case studies, which represent common tasks of lifetime prediction based on cycle and calendar aging data of 104 automotive lithium‐ion pouch‐cells. On average, predictive accuracy for extrapolations over storage time and energy throughput is increased by 38% and 13%, respectively. For predictions over other stress factors, error reductions of up to 77% are achieved. Furthermore, the evolutionary generated aging models meet requirements regarding applicability, generalizability, and interpretability. This highlights the potential of evolutionary algorithms to enhance cell aging predictions as well as insights.

This paper combines a multi-sectoral approach with a perspective on the geography of transitions. The concept of coevolution is used to bridge these contributions as it allows to see mutual influences and adaptation between sectors while acknowledging spatial embeddedness and its economic, institutional and social aspects. The argument is discussed using the case of the transition to Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the connections between three technologies: EV, battery, and smart grid. Patent citations are used to construct three main paths allowing to geolocate key inventions and to elaborate on the role of cities in supporting knowledge recombination. The case study suggests that a coevolutionary perspective can contribute to understanding the geography of transitions in three ways: by relating emerging socio-technical configurations to changed power relations and opportunities along the value chain, by exposing the spatial embeddedness of interdependent sectors and by clarifying the role of actors and networks.

This paper mainly focuses on the safe maintenance of power systems and the use of secondary batteries for electric vehicles from the experimental scenarios. In engineering, the power battery module of series connection or parallel connection is conducive to the fast combination and unloading of high-voltage energy systems in the electric vehicles. However, the parallel connection is affected by inconsistency and generally uses the powerful resistance to solve the current shock. In this paper, an improved RC network lithium-iron-phosphate battery model based on parallel hysteretic voltage is proposed to achieve a safe parallel sequence and solve the high current impact in this process. Furthermore, the voltage oscillation standard deviations at different voltage levels and voltage differences are carried out, which obtains the hysteretic curve map of oscillating voltage distribution. At last, the voltage oscillation model is established by discussing the oscillating parallel characteristics, and the control strategy of the pre-charging circuit can be applied to the voltage optimization. Comparative experimental results using 32650 lithium-ion phosphate battery can effectively achieve satisfactory predicting performance with a reasonable voltage range.

Full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have become an important policy option to mitigate climate change, but there are major uncertainties in the scale and timing of market diffusion. Although there has been substantial work showing the potential energy and climate benefits of BEVs, demand-side factors, such as consumer behaviour, are less recognized in the debate. We show the importance of assessing BEV diffusion from an integrated perspective, focusing on key interactions between technology and behaviour across different scales, including power-system demand, charging infrastructure, vehicle performance, driving patterns and individual adoption behaviour.

Despite seemingly favourable conditions for alternative road-based transport technologies, progress on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have been slow in Stockholm. We investigate why, applying the multilevel perspective for socio-technical transitions to a local case study of Stockholm. Using in-depth interviews with key actors we trace processes and discuss possible explanations at niche, regime and landscape levels. The results show that niche developments are clearly lacking, resulting in limited experience and knowledge of BEVs, and enduring conceptions among both policymakers and consumers. Regime actors are also ambivalent towards BEVs, leading to limited regime action with for example car companies moving more to Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicles instead of BEVs. Finally, there is uncertainty as a result of a lack of strong policy signals for BEVs, in turn driven by policy makers’ aversion against technology-specific support. We outline what governance gaps need to be addressed to induce faster progress on BEV uptake.

Electric vehicles represent an innovation with the potential to lower greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate the causes of climate change. However, externalities including the appropriability of knowledge and pollution abatement result in societal/economic benefits that are not incorporated in electric vehicle prices. In order to address resulting market failures, governments have employed a number of policies. We seek to determine the relationship of one such policy instrument (consumer financial incentives) to electric vehicle adoption. Based on existing literature, we identified several additional socio-economic factors that are expected to be influential in determining electric vehicle adoption rates. Using multiple linear regression analysis, we examined the relationship between those variables and 30 national electric vehicle market shares for the year 2012. The model found financial incentives, charging infrastructure, and local presence of production facilities to be significant and positively correlated to a country׳s electric vehicle market share. Results suggest that of those factors, charging infrastructure was most strongly related to electric vehicle adoption. However, descriptive analysis suggests that neither financial incentives nor charging infrastructure ensure high electric vehicle adoption rates.

In this work, the prospects of available and new battery technologies for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are examined. Five selected battery technologies are assessed on battery performance and cost in the short, medium and long term. Driving cycle simulations are carried out to assess the influence of the batteries on the energetic, environmental and economic performance of BEVs in the medium term.Well-to-wheel energy consumption and emissions of BEVs are lowest for lithium-ion batteries; 314–374 Wh km−1 and 76–90 gCO2eq km−1 (assuming 593 gCO2 kWh−1 for European electricity mix), compared to 450–760 Wh km−1 and 150–170 gCO2eq km−1 for petrol and diesel cars. The total driving costs are lowest for ZEBRA batteries (0.43–0.62 $ km−1). But, only if ZEBRA batteries attain a very low cost of 100 $ kWh−1 and driving ranges are below 200 km, BEVs become cost competitive to diesel cars.For all batteries, it remains a challenge to simultaneously meet requirements on specific energy, specific power, efficiency, cycle life, lifetime, safety and costs in the medium or even long term. Only lithium-ion batteries could possibly attain all conditions in the medium term. Batteries that do not contain lithium have best perspectives to attain low costs. Vehicles with electric drive trains are currently the subject of intense discussion by society. The cost trends of the individual components in the electric drive train are a central aspect of the future market success of the different vehicle drive systems.An innovative two-factor experience curve approach was developed to facilitate the generation of the most meaningful cost forecasts for these components. This enables the creation of a flexible cost forecast model that supplements the two-factor experience curve approach by an analogous technology component.The performance of the model was demonstrated using alternative drive components, namely the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack, a high energy lithium-ion battery and a high power lithium-ion battery.A comparison of the forecast values calculated using this model with the industry targets determined by McKinsey in the study “A portfolio of power-trains for Europe” [1] shows that the realization of these targets for the fuel cell stack is possible if the product volume increases rapidly enough. For the high energy and high power lithium-ion battery targets, the product volume and research and development activity, measured here in terms of patent growth, need to grow compared to the trend of the last years.

Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are currently more expensive than conventional passenger cars but may become cheaper due to technological learning. Here, we obtain insight into the prospects of future price decline by establishing ex-post learning rates for HEVs and ex-ante price forecasts for HEVs and BEVs. Since 1997, HEVs have shown a robust decline in their price and price differential at learning rates of 7±2% and 23±5%, respectively. By 2010, HEVs were only 31±22 €2010 kW−1 more expensive than conventional cars. Mass-produced BEVs are currently introduced into the market at prices of 479±171 €2010 kW−1, which is 285±213 €2010 kW−1 and 316±209 €2010 kW−1 more expensive than HEVs and conventional cars. Our forecast suggests that price breakeven with these vehicles may only be achieved by 2026 and 2032, when 50 and 80 million BEVs, respectively, would have been produced worldwide. We estimate that BEVs may require until then global learning investments of 100–150 billion € which is less than the global subsidies for fossil fuel consumption paid in 2009. These findings suggest that HEVs, including plug-in HEVs, could become the dominant vehicle technology in the next two decades, while BEVs may require long-term policy support.
