Armando Guerra, the Mapmaker who saved a Newspaper
Abstract and Figures
Francisco Martín Llorente, officer of the chiefs of staff of Spain's armed forces, helped advance the visualization of information in the Spanish press. His reports and maps on the First World War published in El Debate between 1916 and 1918 represent one of the fi rst attempts to create a recurring section dedicated to visual information. It was not by chance that he chose the pseudonym " Armando Guerra " , which, in addition to being a plausible masculine name, can also be understood to mean " troublemaker " .
