Abstract and Figures

In this paper we assess an on-demand public transportation system through a simulation study. The on-demand system makes use of minibuses that have neither fixed itineraries nor fixed stops. The minibuses are rerouted online to dynamically accommodate the requests received by the users. To use the on-demand service users communicate, close to their desired departure time, the origin and destination of the trip. If the estimated arrival time at destination fulfills the user acceptance threshold, it will be chosen. In the simulation we allow the user to walk, to use the on-demand service, a bus or a private car. We will consider a large number of scenarios to evaluate the potential costs/benefits of the introduction of an on-demand service. We will also analyze the scalability and the responsiveness of the service. The results suggest that an on-demand public transportation system would be preferred by most users to the private car and to a bus service. This in turn would imply a more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation system.

When demand for transportation is low or highly variable, traditional public bus services tend to lose their efficiency and typically frustrate (potential) passengers. In the literature, a large number of demand-responsive systems, that promise improved flexibility, have therefore been developed. At present, however, a comprehensive survey of these systems is lacking. In this paper, we fill this gap by presenting a unifying framework that classifies all demand-responsive public bus systems. The classification is mainly based on three degrees of responsiveness: dynamic online, dynamic offline, and static. For each system we discuss the specific optimization problem modeled, whether realistic data is considered, and the size of the instances used for testing. Where possible, we try to draw conclusions on the current state of the literature and try to identify potential avenues for future research. Different tables are included to structure and summarize the information of all papers.

The real-time on-demand bus routing problem (ODBRP) supports the online routing of buses in a large-scale ride-sharing system. Given are a set of buses with fixed capacity, a set of bus stations and a set of transportation requests, only part of which are known before the planning horizon. A request consists of a set of possible departure and arrival stations, as well as an earliest departure and latest arrival time. The aim is to (1) assign each passenger to a departure and arrival bus station and (2) develop a set of bus routes to fulfill each request within its time window while minimizing the sum of the total waiting time and the total user ride time. Including the possibility for requests to be issued after the start of the planning horizon, i.e., when buses have already started servicing other requests, requires a dynamic re-optimization of a partially executed solution. Compared to the case in which all requests are known beforehand, the solution quality, expressed as the total waiting and user ride time, is expected to decline. This decline in objective function value can be seen as the “cost” of the dynamic requests. In this paper, we introduce the real-time ODBRP as an extension of its static problem variant and present a heuristic to deal with dynamic requests. In addition, an extensive set of experiments allows us to conclude that dynamic requests indeed lead to higher waiting and user ride times, especially for passengers who submit their request at the last minute. Passengers are therefore encouraged, if possible, to send their request well in advance, as this results in lower and more stable service promises, higher customer satisfaction, and higher revenues for the operating on-demand bus company.

Traditional public transportation systems are operated upon fixed timetables defining static schedules for the offered transportation means, e.g. buses, trains, ships. The passengers have to make their itineraries for choosing suitable transportation offers on the basis of the static schedules. On the opposite, private passenger transport is highly flexible. In its most flexible and individual form, it is performed by private cars driven by their owners. Several trend-setting concepts aim at individualizing and customizing public transport. Well-known examples for such flexible transportation modes are private ride-sharing agreements, agencies for arranging rides, bike and car-sharing, collect and bring services (e.g. for pupils or patients), hailed shared taxis, bus-on-demand services or in the future, maybe, even autonomous vehicles. Flexible services have to be synchronized for realizing multi-stage or multi-modal transportation chains. Moreover, vehicle routing and passenger routing have to be adjusted in a complicated two-echelon matching process. In this contribution, an overview of several types of customized, flexible passenger transportation services is given and the resulting routing problems are classified in order to check whether vehicle routing approaches in the area of cargo transportation can help to solve the optimization problems arising from the current trends of individualizing public transport.

The evolution of information systems and the growth in the use of the Internet and social networks has caused an explosion in the amount of available data relevant to the activities of the companies. Therefore, the treatment of these available data is vital to support operational, tactical and strategic decisions. This paper aims to present the concept of big data and the main technologies that support the analysis of large data volumes. The potential of big data is explored considering nine sectors of activity, such as financial, retail, healthcare, transports, agriculture, energy, manufacturing, public, and media and entertainment. In addition, the main current opportunities, vulnerabilities and privacy challenges of big data are discussed. It was possible to conclude that despite the potential for using the big data to grow in the previously identified areas, there are still some challenges that need to be considered and mitigated, namely the privacy of information, the existence of qualified human resources to work with Big Data and the promotion of a data-driven organizational culture.

Problems in transportation and logistics had to be tackled long before computers and Operational Research (OR) became available to support decision making. After the first optimization models were developed, OR has substantially contributed in making transportation systems efficient and companies with complex transportation and logistics problems competitive. Over the years, technology has evolved and the same has done OR. In this paper, the history of problems and OR contributions in transportation and logistics will be shortly reviewed together with the evolution of technology. Then, the future trends in this area will be discussed together with potential OR contributions.

Public transport (PT) services are essential in providing mobility and connecting rural population to basic services, however, sparsely populated areas with long travelling distances are challenging for conventional PT scheme. Balancing the transport needs of rural population with limited resources and sustainable travel can be a struggle for transport planners. Given the small number of passengers, it is often assumed that there is no demand for PT services in sparsely populated rural areas. To identify the actual demand for PT services in such areas, “Transport on demand” (ToD) service was offered to residents of two counties in Vidzeme region, Latvia.This paper highlights the problems of approach used in PT planning for rural areas and presents the results of the pilot study “Transport on demand”, which allow to identify the real demand and to improve public transport supply for local transport services in rural areas.KeywordsMobilityRural areasPublic transportDemand-responsive transport

Planning and housing policies influence our daily lives. They determine where we live, where we work, where our children study, and the time it takes us to commute between these places. As such, planning and housing policy often affects individuals' and households' satisfaction with each of these and determines the price to be paid by anyone who is not satisfied and wishes to make a change. On the basis of this fundamental premise, we set out to examine how Israel's planning and housing policy has influenced the decision of middle-class families to migrate away from the metropolitan core and the implications of the move for the employment situations of these families, and of women in these families in particular. The analysis is based on a large survey of women and men in Israel who moved away from the heart of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area into smaller municipalities on its outskirts. The study has three theoretical pillars: planning and housing policy, internal migration, and women's employment. We examine the relationship between these pillars, focusing on its implications for various aspects of women's employment. The findings show that women are more likely than men to change their place of work following the move and to suffer a decrease in income, and to trade higher-paying jobs for a shorter commute. These findings show how planning and housing policies can increase gender inequality in the labour market and point to how it can be avoided. This issue is relevant today more than ever in the face of the dramatic changes women's employment has undergone over the last century, and in particular, in face of the current global housing affordability crisis and its impact on migration trends of middle-class families.

In this paper we present the results of a simulation study aimed at assessing an on-demand transportation system. The on-demand system uses minibuses that have neither fixed itineraries nor fixed stops. The minibuses are dynamically routed to accommodate the requests received by the users. To use the on-demand service, users communicate, close to their desired departure time, the origin and destination of the trip. They accept the service if the estimated arrival time at destination fulfills their service level threshold. In the simulation users may decide whether to walk, to use a standard bus, to call the on-demand service, and, if none of these options is satisfactory, to use a private car. We consider different scenarios to assess the potential benefits of the introduction of an on-demand service. We also analyze the scalability and responsiveness of the service. The results suggest that an on-demand system may be able to satisfy a large portion of user transportation requests and may be put beside standard transportation systems in order to provide a better transportation service to the users and substantially reduce the use of private cars.

The field of “Sustainable Operations” and the term itself have arisen only in the last ten to twenty years in the context of sustainable development. Even though the term is frequently used in practice and research, it has hardly been characterized and defined precisely in the literature so far. For reasons of clarity and unambiguity, we present terms and definitions before we demarcate Sustainable Operations from its neighboring topics. We especially focus on the interactions between economic, social and ecological aspects as part of Sustainable Operations, but exclude the development of a normative ethics, instead focusing on the use of quantitative methods from Operations Research. Then the broad subject of Sustainable Operations is structured into various areas arising from the typical structure of an enterprise. For each area, we present examples of applications and refer to the existing literature. The paper concludes with future research directions.

This paper presents the formulation of a new optimization problem designated as the express minibus problem, which intends to form small groups of clients with compatible boarding/exiting points in time and space for a new type of urban mobility service. This new transport option, as a competitive alternative to the private car, aims to provide almost direct services between dispersed demand poles in places where high-capacity and efficient public transport options are scarce, thus combining the major strengths of both public transport and private vehicles. Conventional public transport systems can present efficient space and energy consumption, whereas private vehicles have high levels of flexibility, are fast, and are always available. The proposed algorithm aims at assessing the potential demand of this new service by developing a clustering algorithm in which the groups of clients formed for each minibus route should present the following characteristics: there is a small number of boarding and exiting points, where in each point there is only boarding or alighting; boarding points should be close to each other, as well as the exiting points; there must be a reasonable distance between the last boarding point and the first exiting point; the average load factor must be high; and for all clients the overall detour time relative to the direct service should be small. This paper presents the rationale and structure of the clustering algorithm, followed by an application for the Lisbon metropolitan area during the morning peak, which could be adapted to the afternoon peak with some slight modifications.

This paper presents a new concept of urban shared-taxi services. The proposed system has a new organisational design and pricing scheme that aims to use the capacity in traditional taxi services in a more efficient way. In this system, a taxi acting in ‘sharing’ mode offers lower prices to its clients, in exchange for them to accept sharing the vehicle with other persons who have compatible trips (time and space). The paper proposes and tests an agent-based simulation model in which a set of rules for space and time matching between a request of a client and the candidate shared taxis is identified. It considers that the client is only willing to accept a maximum deviation from his or her direct route and establishes an objective function for selecting the best candidate taxi. The function considers the minimum travel time combination of pickup and drop-off of all the pool of clients sharing each taxi while allowing to establish a policy of bonuses to competing taxis with certain number of occupants. An experiment for the city of Lisbon is presented with the objectives of testing the proposed simulation conceptual model and showing the potential of sharing taxis for improving mobility management in urban areas. Results show that the proposed system may lead to significant fare and travel time savings to passengers, while not jeopardising that much the taxi revenues. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper focuses on the formulation of a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) that was used in the design of a new alternative intermediate transport mode and examines the viability of its implementation on the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. Due to the high combinatorial nature of the problem, the modelling process was divided into four phases: estimation of the potential demand, definition of stops, determination of the service O/D matrix and establishment of the most profitable routes. The developed algorithm is able to generate solutions for large areas, although limited by the number of stops considered in the routing phase.

This paper uses a simulated annealing algorithm to solve the optimal bus transit route network design problem (BTRNDP) at the distribution node level. A multiobjective nonlinear mixed integer model is formulated for the BTRNDP. The proposed solution framework consists of three main components: An initial candidate route set generation procedure that generates all feasible routes incorporating practical bus transit industry guidelines; and a network analysis procedure that assigns transit trips, determines service frequencies, and computes performance measures; and a simulated annealing procedure that combines these two parts, guides the candidate solution generation process and selects an optimal set of routes from the huge solution space. Three experimental networks are successfully tested as a pilot study. A genetic algorithm is also used as a benchmark to measure the quality of the simulated annealing algorithm. The presented numerical results clearly indicate that the simulated annealing outperforms the genetic algorithm in most cases using the example networks. Sensitivity analyses are performed and related characteristics and tradeoffs underlying the BTRNDP are also discussed.

The dial-services are an excellent connection between classical forms of collective and private transport; they are the answer to the development of transport demand from homogeneous travels (home/office, home/factory, home/school in limited areas and periods) to not homogeneous travels (short continuous travels toward many different destinations); they are also the answer to the growing need of travels from specific consumers' classes such as disabled, elders and students. It is a new transport form more oriented to meet the consumers' requirements. It is possible to identify four operative levels of the DTRS (Demand Responsive Transport Services). Level one: fixed itineraries and fixed stops with possibility of access through booking. Level two: fixed itineraries with possibility of detours within specific boundaries and fixed optional stops. Level three: service with free routes between fixed points. Level four: service with free routes between free points. This paper aims at describing the above-mentioned transport systems and at analysing their efficacy, productivity and consumers' opinions, providing some examples experienced in Florence (PersonalBus) and in Genoa (DrinBus).

This paper introduces an innovative transportation concept called Flexible Mobility on Demand (FMOD), which provides personalized services to passengers. FMOD is a demand responsive system in which a list of travel options is provided in real-time to each passenger request. The system provides passengers with flexibility to choose from a menu that is optimized in an assortment optimization framework. For operators, there is flexibility in terms of vehicle allocation to di erent service types: taxi, shared-taxi and mini-bus. The allocation of the available fleet to these three services is carried out dynamically and based on demand and supply so that vehicles can change roles during the day. The FMOD system is built based on a choice model and consumer surplus is taken into account in order to improve the passenger satisfaction. Furthermore, pro fits of the operators are expected to increase since the system adapts to changing demand patterns. In this paper, we introduce the concept of FMOD and present preliminary simulation results that quantify the added value of this system.

The viability of implementing a new alternative intermediate transport mode in the Lisbon, Portugal, metropolitan area was examined. The intention of this new system was to combine the major strengths of both public transport and private vehicles to provide a competitive transport alternative for commuters from low and intermediate density areas, who do not create enough demand to sustain a high-quality public transport service. Conventional public transport systems can provide efficient space and energy consumption, whereas private vehicles have high levels of flexibility and are fast and always available. A comprehensive methodology is presented to encompass the generation of input data of the model on the basis of transport demand data involving spatial-temporal constraints, the possible location of the service stops, and the detailed characterization of the service operation. The global objective of the model is to design a self-sustainable system that would maximize the operator's profit, not one that would satisfy all potential demand. The developed model uses supply parameters obtained through current bus operators in the region. However, the estimated values should be refined before service deployment. This assessment was performed, as an initial test bed for Lisbon and will be expanded to the whole metropolitan area. Results suggest that this service might be significantly profitable to the operator and a good alternative for single private car drivers. Implementation of this system may relieve some congestion during peak periods.

This paper presents a mathematical stochastic methodology for transit route network optimization. The goal is to provide an effective computational tool for the optimization of a large-scale transit route network to minimize transfers with reasonable route directness while maximizing service coverage. The methodology includes representation of transit route network solution search spaces, representation of transit route and network constraints, and a stochastic search scheme based on an integrated simulated annealing and genetic algorithm solution search method. The methodology has been implemented as a computer program, tested using previously published results, and applied to a large-scale realistic network optimization problem.

In this paper we present a Lisp-implemented route generation algorithm (RGA) for the design of transit networks. Along with an analysis procedure and an improvement algorithm, this algorithm constitutes one of the three major components of an AI-based hybrid solution approach to solving the transit network design problem. Such a hybrid approach incorporates the knowledge and expertise of transit network planners and implements efficient search techniques using AI tools, algorithmic procedures developed by others, and modules for tools implemented in conventional languages. RGA is a design algorithm that 1.(a) is heavily guided by the demand matrix,2.(b) allows the designer's knowledge to be implemented so as to reduce the search space, and3.(c) generates different sets of routes corresponding to different trade-offs among conflicting objectives (user and operator costs). We explain in detail the major components of RGA, illustrate it on data generated for the transit network of the city of Austin, TX, and report on the numerical experiments conducted to test the performance of RGA.

Urban bus services still play an important role in the movement of people in Britain, although since the 1950's bus patronage has been declining and costs of operation have been increasing. Most of the urban bus networks in Britain (and to a very large extent the Western World) have developed or evolved over the years and it is sometimes said that, despite the changing conditions of bus transport, few of these bus networks in Britain have undergone major re-organisation. A survey was carried out to ascertain this view and to establish the approaches used by British urban bus operators. Five approaches to the planning of urban bus routes and frequencies have been identified: (1) manual; (2) Market Analysis Project; (3) systems analysis; (4) systems analysis with interactive graphics; and (5) mathematical. Previous research in, and application of, the different approaches are described and examined. Between 1970 and 1980, 82.4% of those British urban operators who responded to the survey carried out some kind of major bus study. The survey results run counter to the view that there has been little recent change in urban bus networks in Britain, but the alleged conservatism of the bus industry appears when the approaches used for re-planning bus services are examined - 71.4% of the operators used a manual approach and only a meagre 28.6% made use of simple assignment techniques to predict the potential passenger impacts of the alternative networks appraised.
