Medvedev et Denise Papachryssanthou, Fragment d'un praktikon de la région d'Athènes (avant 1204) . — Ce fragment est contenu dans deux folios de manuscrit utilisés comme reliure et classés comme manuscrit n° 122 à la Bibliothèque Publique de Leningrad. L'édition diplomatique de ce texte, assez abîmé par endroits, est accompagnée d'une étude du contenu (liste de biens avec des tableaux, liste de parèques) et d'une étude des lieux et des personnes, avec un index. Sans atteindre les proportions du cadastre de Thèbes, ce nouveau document apporte de précieux renseignements pour la topographie d'Athènes et de ses environs avant l'occupation franque.
Στη μελέτη αυτή γίνεται προσπάθεια να συγκεντρωθούν στοιχεία σχετικά με την παντελώς άγνωστη προσωπικότητα του δωρητή του καθολικού της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου, στο Δαφνί. Με την εξέταση της ποιότητας και του νοηματικού περιεχομένου της ψηφιδωτής διακόσμησης αναζητούνται στοιχεία σχετικά με την προσωπικότητα του άγνωστου δωρητή. Ο Γρηγόριος Καματηρός χρημάτισε πραίτωρ του Θέματος Ελλάδος και Πελοποννήσου, όπως είναι γνωστό από μολυβδόβουλλα του 11ου/12ου αιώνα. Ο αξιωματούχος αυτός, λόγιος, με υψηλή θεολογική κατάρτιση και μεγάλο πλούτο, που απέκτησε ως φοροσυλλέκτης, γραμματέας του Αλεξίου Α΄ το 1094, ο οποίος συνδέθηκε εξ αγχιστείας με την οικογένεια των Δουκών και έφθασε στο υψηλό αξίωμα του λογοθέτη των σεκρέτων, έχει μεγάλη πιθανότητα να θεωρηθεί ο κτήτωρ της μονής Δαφνίου. Φαίνεται δε ότι ίδρυσε το μοναστήρι σε κτήματα της οικογένειάς του στην Αττική
The paper aims at offering a sketch of the history and a description, as complete as possible, of the
dialect of old Athens on the basis of known, as well as hitherto unknown, sources, including the only
surviving Athenian dialectal texts from the 19th century. The dialect belonged to a group that comprised
the varieties of the nearby city of Megara and the Saronic Gulf island of Aegina, as well as of the
southern part of the island of Euboea, and is generally regarded as one of the most poorly recorded
Modern Greek varieties. The city of Athens became the capital of the modern Greek state after the
Greek War of Independence in 1834 and consequently witnessed an immense influx of Greek speakers
from all over the Greek speaking world, a process that heavily contributed to the dialect’s recession and
final extinction by the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century.
This paper presents a survey of the physical remains of the ancient Athenian circuit wall, which are plotted here on a new map aligned with the city’s modern urban structure. Technical details of the methods and materials of construction are reviewed in order to distinguish the characteristics of the surviving stretches of walls and to assess the chronological value of these details. The author proposes likely locations for sections of the circuit wall not yet identified. Drawing on the results of the survey and on literary and epigraphical evidence, the author identifies four courses and 15 construction phases of the city wall of Athens between the early 5th century b.c. and the mid-6th century a.d.
This paper examines the Cadaster of Thebes, an eleventh-century Byzantine fiscal document, to see what light it sheds on both the intention and ability of the Byzantine bureaucracy to maintain a formal taxation system based on land registration. While the document attests to efforts at maintaining such a system, the quality of record keeping in the Cadaster of Thebes is insufficient for the document to play the role formally accorded to it within that system. It is suggested that Byzantine cad asters aided taxation by creating the impression of a pervasive imperial government and ceremonially connecting every household to the emperor through his interceding administrators.
