The Legend of Greta Garbo, or Woman as Thing: Hollywood Creations in Max Frisch's Stiller
Abstract
In this paper, I argue that the silent film director Mauritz Stiller (1883–1928), renowned for having discovered Greta Garbo and for fashioning her into one of the most famous screen icons of all time, served as a model for the eponymous hero of Max Frisch's Stiller. The reputedly odd, symbiotic relationship between Garbo and her mentor, who were dubbed by friends “Pygmalion and Galatea,” parallels on a number of levels the obvious Pygmalion-Galatea relation between the sculptor Stiller and his beautiful wife and model, the ballerina Julika Stiller-Tschudy. Seen in this light, the “feminine mystique” with which Frisch imbues his fictive diva is not only a purposeful allusion to his own film idol, but also a complex representation of man's creation of woman into the fundamentally inaccessible object of his idealized love.

Diese matriarchale Schöpfungswelt kommt im Roman beispielhaft in einer Schilderung eines Totentags in Mexiko zum Ausdruck, wo die Frauen auf der Erde knien, »damit die Seelen der Verstorbenen aufsteigen in ihren Schoß« (Frisch 1998: 668). Stiller rückt Julika nicht nur in Form eines Kunstobjekts, wie bereits erwähnt, als »schöne, seltsame, tote Vase« (Frisch 1998: 608) Revesz (2015) und Bamert (2015; wenig diskutiert. Diese Figur bringt homoerotisches Begehren als kulturelles Script ein, das ich als wesentliche Dimension männlicher sexueller Scripts im Roman beleuchten möchte. ...

Studiul de față decodifică influența Hollywood-ului asupra femeilor consumatoare de modă în cazul particular al Gretei Garbo și identificarea impactului său concret după cum a fost reprezentată în presa interbelică. Aprofundarea acestor aspecte ale modei interbelice, folosind metodele inerent interdisciplinare ale studiilor de modă, oferă o imagine panoramică a capitalei și a României prin extensie, incluzând detalii despre realitățile de gen, economice, sociale, politice, dar și artistice. Astfel, voi folosi metodologii specifice studiilor culturale (studii de modă, gen, film), sociologiei, și fotografiei pentru analiza semiotică și discursivă a articolelor și imaginilor cu caracter instructiv sau descriptiv. Pornind de la ideea diseminării globale a ideilor americane în perioada interbelică, personificată mai ales prin mitul Gretei Garbo, acest eseu își propune să contureze portretul bucureștencei interbelice prin prisma influenței modelelor estetice și comportamentale venite din direcția Hollywood-ului.

Wandel und Persistenz der Geschlechterverhältnisse in Arbeitswelt, Familie und Politik bedeuten für Männer* und Männlichkeit(en) spezifische Möglichkeiten und Herausforderungen. Zur Debatte steht, was sich gegenwärtig überhaupt verändert. Welche Entwicklungen werden ausgemacht? Welche Potenziale, Widersprüche und Spannungen – für Männer* und für die Gesellschaft – tun sich auf oder entstehen dadurch? Wie haben sich Männlichkeiten historisch in der Schweiz überhaupt gestaltet und ausgebildet?
Das Buch bündelt Forschungsbeiträge zu Männlichkeit(en) in der Schweiz, die zu einer kritischen Zeitdiagnose beitragen. Dabei werden Perspektiven aus verschiedenen Disziplinen – der Geschlechterforschung, Soziologie, Sozialen Arbeit, Geschichte, Literaturwissenschaft, Psychologie und Migrationsforschung – eingebracht.
L'Antiquité avait son Oedipe, le Grand Siècle son roi Soleil, et voilà que Barthes donne à la France de l'après-guerre ses nouveaux emblèmes : la DS Citroën, le Tour de France, le steak frites... Tous objets d'un culte bourgeois, ils deviennent de véritables mythes pour une société qui finit par se penser à travers eux. Mais si Barthes se penche avec la rigueur de l'ethnologue sur ces nouveaux mythes, c'est pour mieux en dénoncer les mécanismes : l'idéologie dominante ne s'inventerait ainsi des valeurs que pour légitimer des "normes bourgeoises" qui en manquent singulièrement... Écrites quotidiennement de 1954 à 1956, ces mythologies déploient une écriture fine, cultivée et juste, à lire comme autant de petites chroniques savoureuses. Toutefois, on les retiendra avant tout pour l'actualité de leurs propos : sur le même modèle, on trouverait sans peine de nouvelles mythologies, qui ne seraient sans doute pas très éloignées de celles que Barthes, en son temps, mettait en évidence. For example, Laura Mulvey’s Visual and Other Pleasures opens with her early essay, ‘Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema’, which set so many of the terms of debate in feminist film theory, and moves on to her recent work on narrative, myth and psychoanalysis. Of Constance Penley’s two collections, the first, Feminism and Film Theory, comprises articles by British and American women theorists, while The Future of an Illusion is a collection of Penley’s own writings on psychoanalysis and film and, more recently, popular culture. Penley’s introduction is in part a debate with Teresa de Lauretis, whose Technologies of Gender includes essays on feminist film theory and practice, a debate which reasserts the opposition between psychoanalytic and materialist approaches to culture, representation and feminist politics. Annette Kuhn bridges both in her continuing work on sexuality, pornography and censorship in films and the film industry.
