Associative clustering in the recall of children as a function of verbal association strength

Two experiments were designed to demonstrate the influence of free association strength on the recall of fourth grade Ss. The list for Exp. I included 15 highly associated word-pairs, randomly presented along with 6 filler words. Sixty Ss recalled significantly more associative clusters than randomly selected clusters. Clustering was apparent in both S-R and R-S directions and the amount of ... [Show full abstract] clustering paralleled the mean forward and reverse associative strengths based upon fourth grade word association norms. In Exp. II the 30 test words were composed of 5 high, 5 medium, and 5 low-strength associative pairs. For 61 Ss, all measures of clustering were directly related to the average degrees of associative strength for the three sets of pairs.

Mixing rank-one actions for infinite sums of finite groups

LetG be a countable direct sum of finite groups. We construct an uncountable family of pairwise disjoint mixing (of any order) rank-one strictly ergodic free actions ofG on a Cantor set. All of them possess the property of minimal self-joinings (of any order). Moreover, an example of rigid weakly mixing rank-one strictly ergodic freeG-action is given.

On pseudo-Frobenius elements of submonoids of N^d

In this paper we study those submonoids of $\mathbb {N}^d$ with a nontrivial pseudo-Frobenius set. In the affine case, we prove that they are the affine semigroups whose associated algebra over a field has maximal projective dimension possible. We prove that these semigroups are a natural generalization of numerical semigroups and, consequently, most of their invariants can be generalized. In ... The weakly almost periodic compactification of a direct sum of finite groups

We consider wG, where G=[oplus B: plus sign in circle]i[set membership]ωGi is the direct sum of a sequence of finite groups ... [Show full abstract] with its discrete topology. We discover a large class of weakly almost periodic functions on G, and we use them to prove the existence of a large number of long chains of idempotents in wG. However, the closure of any singly generated subsemigroup of wG contains only one idempotent. We also prove that the set of idempotents in wG is not closed. The minimal idempotent of wG can be written as the sum of two others, with the consequence that the minimal ideal of wG is not prime. Pursuing possible parallels with the structure of β[open face N], we find subsemigroups SF of wG which are ‘carried’ by closed subsets F of βω. wG contains the free abelian product of the semigroups SF corresponding to families of disjoint subsets F. Usually SF is a very large semigroup, but for some points p[set membership]βω, Sp can be quite small.
