Research on Properties of Rock-mineral Wool as Thermal Insulation

Abstract. Rock wool and slag wool pertain to the same kind of thermal insulation material, which
can be produced in quantity and widely used, by comparison with other inorganic fiber thermal
insulation materials, thus it is one of the most important thermal insulation material for the national
economic development in our country. After the implementation of Civil Construction Energy
Efficiency Management Regulation, it puts forward higher requirements for the energy saving
standard of new buildings, thus the application prospect of rock-mineral wool thermal insulation
material is promising. This paper mainly presents the source of rock-mineral wool, its main relative
merits as well as its application in the construction field, moreover, the application and development
potential of rock-mineral wool as the thermal insulation material for building wall construction.
Introduction
Civil Construction Energy Efficiency Management Regulation has been put into effect since the
first day of January in 2006, in which the construction of new buildings should be strictly
accordance with the design standard of energy saving 50%, a number of large cities including
Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai take the lead in implementing the standard of energy saving 65%. In
order to achieve the energy saving standard above, however, the standard can be hardly realized
merely by the self-thermal insulation of wall construction materials, thus a variety of thermal
insulation materials have been widely applied in the wall thermal insulation system. Some organic
thermal insulation materials such as EPS and XPS have been mainly used for the wall thermal
insulation system in our country, nevertheless, rock wool has been increasingly used as a kind of
thermal insulation material for the wall thermal insulation system in many public projects and
high-end housing construction, by virtues of its favorable fireproof performance, air permeability
and excellent sound insulation property.
Source of materials
Rock wool and slag wool pertain to the same kind of thermal insulation material, which can be
produced in quantity and widely used, by comparison with other inorganic fiber thermal insulation
materials, thus it is one of the most important thermal insulation material for the national economic
development in China. Rock wool and slag wool are distinguished based on the source of materials.
The main materials of rock wool include basalt, dolerite, dolomite and the like, which are made into
inorganic fiber materials by means of melting in high temperature, blowing or centrifugation, etc;
while slag wool is made from industrial solid waste (mainly blast furnace slag, copper slag or
