Problem solving, self- efficacy, and mental health in adolescents: Assessing the mediating role of assertiveness

Abstract and Figures

This study investigated the direct and indirect effects of problem solving and self-efficacy on mental health in adolescents. Participants were 914 students (428 boys, 486 girls) in first grade of high school. They were asked to complete the General Self-efficacy Scale (GSE; Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995), the Problem Solving Inventory (PSI; Heppner & Petersen, 1982), the Gambrill-Richey Assertion Inventory (GRAI; Gambrill & Richey, 1975), and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28; Goldberg, 1972). Results revealed that self-efficacy and problem solving were the direct and indirect predictors of mental health. Assertiveness was mediated on the relationship between self-efficacy and problem solving with mental health. The findings of this study provided evidence for the mediating mechanisms through which assertiveness mediated the relationships between self-efficacy and problem solving with mental health. Abstract

1. Introduction
Assertiveness in psychology is rooted in the education of social skills and behaviour therapy. Theorists consider
it commonly as the proper expression of any kind of feelings, except stress, toward others (Furnham, 1979). Eskin
(2003) views assertiveness as an important social skill which promotes an individual's well-being. Most definitions
of assertiveness emphasize the direct expression of feelings, desires and thoughts in interpersonal areas. Other
researchers conceptualize assertiveness as the direct and proper expression of one's needs and ideas without
humiliating others without any fear in the process. Assertive training as a treatment approach is proposed for
individuals who are suffering in the interpersonal situations or for individuals who are plagued with interpersonal
problems (Wolpe, 1969). Wolpe & Lazarus (1966) defining assertiveness state includes the expression of anger and
dissatisfaction, the term 'assertive' is associated with any kind of expression of personal rights and feelings which
are socially acceptable.
Over the last decades, researchers have become increasingly interested in looking at the link between problem
solving and adjustment. A considerable number of studies on social problem solving in adults have found it to be
related to important negative psychological variables, including depressive symptoms, anxiety, and suicide risk
(Nezu, 2004). Results of researches indicated that generalized self- efficacy and problem solving orientation are
related, but are not redundant with each other. Moreover, results indicated that although generalized self-efficacy is

an important predictor of psychological and physical functioning, problem orientation, specifically, negative
problem orientation added incremental validity in predicting additional unique variance in measures of functioning
(Zumberg, Chang, & Sanna, 2008).
Studies have shown that highly assertive individuals view a stressful situation, such as giving a speech before an
audience, as a challenge while those with a low assertive evaluate it as a threatening stressful situation. Applying a
problem-solving orientation usually involves appraising problems as challenges, thinking that the problems can be
solved, and realizing that effective problem solving tends to require time and systematic effort (Nezu, 2004). Highly
assertive individuals show a challenging automatic response pattern during speech while lowly assertive individuals
show a threat response pattern (Tomaka, Palacios, Schneider et al., 1999). Assertive training reduces interpersonal
anxiety and is used as part of the stress management program and it is a mechanism to reduce the physiological
signs of stress (Williams & Stout, 1985). Studies on assertiveness and depression symptoms showed that non-
assertive responses, especially in expression and self-projection, have a positive relationship with a depressed mood
(Chan, 1993). Studies have also shown that there is a negative relationship between assertiveness and interpersonal
anxiety on the one hand and between self-esteem and depression on the other hand. This shows that interpersonal
anxiety originates from reduced assertiveness (e.g., Paterson, Green, & Ross, 2002). Tanck & Robbins (1979)
showed that assertiveness was associated with problem solving and reliance on personal creativity to decrease
tension. Studies have shown that there is a significant positive relationship between assertiveness and problem
solving and reliance on invented solution to reduce interpersonal relationship. Paterson et al. (2002) showed that
there is a high positive correlation between self-efficacy level and assertiveness and a high negative correlation with
interpersonal anxiety.
Several studies have been conducted in relation with self-efficacy and its correlation with assertiveness, health
and problem solving. The present study attempts to explain the direct and indirect effects of self-efficacy and
problem solving on mental health in adolescents. Therefore, the present research aims to investigate the role of
assertiveness as a mediating variable in the relationship of the self-efficacy and problem solving with mental health.
The hypotheses assumed in this study are as follows: 1) Problem solving, self-efficacy and assertiveness have a
positive relationship with mental health; and 2) Problem solving and self-efficacy have an indirect effect on the
mental health by mediating the assertiveness.
2. Method
2.1. Participant
Participants were 914 students (428 male. Mean age = 15.45 yr., SD = .55 and 486 female. Mean age = 15.35 yr.,
SD = .45) randomly selected first-grade high school (grade=9) students studying in different schools in Tehran.
2.2. Measures
The Gambrill- Richey Assertion Inventory (GRAI)-The GRAI (Gambrill & Richey, 1975) is a 40-item self-
report measure. Each item is rated on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 to 5 .This questionnaire was adapted
to meet the local Iranian culture. A correlation of .46 was reported between the test scores and the results of the
observation of the role play of the participants. In addition, Gambrill & Richey (1975) reported a reliability
coefficient of .81 for this scale.
The Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES)-The GSES (Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995) consists of 10 items to
which subjects respond on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). The
scale was shortened from an original set of 20 items to 10 items. The scale has been used in many studies and its
reliability (Cronbach’s alpha) was reported to be .75 and .90, thus, the adequate psychometric properties of English
(e.g., Schwarzer & Jerusalem, 1995) and Farsi versions of the scale have been reported.
The Personal problem Solving Inventory (PPSI)-The PPSI (Heppner& Petersen, 1982) consisted of 32 items
that measure the participant's perceptions of his problem solving behaviors and tendencies. Each item is rated on a
3-point Likert scale ranging from 1 to 3. It provides a total problem solving score and also three sub-scales rating to
problem solving competence (PSC), personal control (PC) and approach- avoidance style (AA). This research was
used the sum of scores.

The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28)-The GHQ- 28 (Goldberg, 1972) consists of 28 items. In the
GHQ-28 the respondent is asked to compare his recent psychological state with his usual state. In this study the
Likert scoring procedure (1, 2, 3, 4) for each item four answer possibilities are available (1-not at all, 2-no more than
usual, 3-rather more than usual, 4- much more than usual). The total scale score ranges from 28 to 112 that the
higher the score show the poorer the psychological well-being. It provides four sub-scales rating to somatic
symptoms, anxiety and insomnia, social dysfunction, and severe depression.
3. Results
All descriptive analyses were conducted in SPSS Version 15 and the path analysis was conducted in path analysis
of LISREL.

The present model aims to assess the structural relationship between problem solving, self-efficacy, assertiveness
and mental health in students. Figure 1 illustrates the standard coefficients for direct and indirect paths.

As can be seen, results supported this hypothesis. The self-efficacy has a direct positive correlation with
assertiveness and negative correlation with GHQ { =β -.11, t=-3.29}. Assertiveness was mediated on the relationship
between self-efficacy and GHQ { =β .10, t=2.89 & =β -.14, t=-4.36}. Furthermore, problem solving has a direct
positive correlation with assertiveness and negative correlation with GHQ { =β -.32, t=-9.33}. In addition,
assertiveness was mediated on the correlation between problem solving and GHQ { =β .21, t= 5.74 & =β -.14, t= -
4.36}. Overall, this model explains 19% of the variance in mental health among students. Furthermore, the
correlation between assertiveness and mental health is negative and significant. Overall, this model explains 19% of

4. Discussion
It seems that the findings in the present study imply that poor assertiveness causes lower social relationship and
alienation which in turn may lead to withdrawal and interpersonal relationship problems and depression. These
points have been well covered in assertive training and other programs (Paterson, Green, & Ross, 2002). Highly
assertive individuals are more than lowly assertive individuals likely to have an internal locus of control. Moreover,
these individuals suffer from fewer health problems and incidences of illness. Supportive relationships are strong
protective factors against mental health problems and may increase the sense of self-efficacy (Eskin, 2003). Studies

have revealed that older students are more assertive than younger ones and this is probably because of the fact that
as one grows up, more interpersonal relationships are learned which in turn increase a sense of confidence in
interpersonal relationship. Having a high level of self-efficacy, an individual responds more assertively in
interacting with others. Assertiveness is an important social skill which promotes an individual's well-being (Eskin,
2003). Assertiveness is in fact about self-confidence. As soon as an individual gains self-confidence, an internal
source of positive feelings and thoughts toward self and others forms. Individuals with low self-confidence are
entrapped with negative thoughts and feelings toward self and others, which leads to a non-assertive disposition.
Therefore, assertiveness is about self-confidence, i.e. having a positive attitude toward self and others. This implies
being frank and respectful toward self and others. When an individual is self-confident and assertive, they can show
an acceptance of others and their attitudes even if they are not congenial (Townend, 1991). Studies have established
the role of social support in assertiveness. Research results also show that there is a positive relationship between
assertiveness and perceived social support and the number of friends one has (Eskin, 2003) and social support has
significant role in individuals' adaptation and health (Cheung & Sun, 2000). Eskin (2003) contends that supportive
relationships are a strong protective power against mental health problems and with a high sense of self-efficacy, an
individual responds more assertively in interaction with others.
Efficacy expectations determine how much effort individuals exert in facing obstacles and opposing expectations
and how much resistant they will turn out to be. Individuals opt out of activities perceived to be beyond their
capacity but involve in activities and challenges that they feel they can mange. With the choices they make, these
individuals gain competencies, interests and different social networks which determine their course of life. This is
because social factors in selected environments continuously improve specific competencies, values and interests
long after being selected (Bandura, 2006). Self-efficacy influences the way individuals feel, think, self-motivate and
behave. These beliefs are influential in four ways: cognitive, motivational, emotional and selection processes
(Bandura, 1993). Individuals who believe that they may control threats cannot imagine a destructive thought pattern
but those who believe the reverse experience a higher anxiety provoking stimulus. They look upon with anger on
many aspects of their environment as threats and cause distress for themselves and harm their level of performance
(Bandura, 1997).
In general, there is a positive correlation between self-efficacy and positive attitude and tackling the problem. In
other words, the more an individual has wrestled with the problem, the higher his self-efficacy expectations and the
more positive his attitude. On the other hand, the lower the self-efficacy of the individual, the higher a sense of
threat and a more negative attitude. Self-efficacy expectations have a positive relationship with positive attitude and
stress reducing strategies and a negative relationship with psychological symptoms and self-isolation and passive
emotional acceptance /avoidance strategies (Karademas & Kalantzi- Azizi, 2004). Blazer (2002) contends that the
centrality of self-efficacy concept is intertwined throughout the definition of new constructs of health,
including a sense of identity (self-acceptance, self- esteem and self-confidence), investment in life and self-
potential, a sense of integrity of life meaning and goal, autonomy, exact perception of reality, environment
control and interpersonal relationship. Therefore, self-efficacy can reduce a sense of loneliness, shame,
avoidance of social risks, self-depressing, low self-esteem and the weakness of social skills and in turn, promote the
mental health. Bandura (1997) believes that low self-efficacy leads to depression in three direct ways: 1) inability to
control the thoughts leading to depression, i.e. low self-efficacy in individuals in controlling destructive thoughts
increases depression; 2) low self-efficacy scuppers the hope in individuals and a sense of hopelessness and low
temperament weakens self-efficacy, resulting in a vicious circle; and 3) individuals with low self-efficacy cannot
form a satisfactory social relationships to facilitate the tolerance of chronic stress. However, an important point
about the relationship between self-efficacy and health is that social anxiety may have a negative effect on social
self-efficacy in a socially threatening situation as well as on the sense of curiosity and feelings (Kashdan & Roberts,
2004). Therefore, the relationship between self-efficacy and some of the variables of mental health seems to be more
complicated than commonly imagined.

This study aimed to clarify the multidimensionality of defending by developing and validating the Adolescent Defending Behaviors Questionnaire (ADBQ) in a sample of Chinese adolescents. Results of Study 1 (N = 824, Mage = 11.25) indicated that a five-factor model, comprising (a) assertive defending, (b) aggressive defending, (c) comforting victims, (d) reporting to authority, and (e) tactical defending, yielded a good fit to the data. Study 2 (N = 1,086, Mage = 11.18) established ADBQ's reliability (α = .78-.93) and construct validity: the five defending dimensions were differentially associated with cognitive and affective empathy, aggression, sociability, peer preference, and victimization. Together, the results suggest that the ADBQ is a psychometrically valid and reliable instrument for assessing the multidimensionality of defending.

Adolescence is a crisis period of personality development marked by significant physiological and neuropsychological changes that affect the growth and relationships with others. The uneven maturation of the limbic system and prefrontal cortex structures, characteristic of adolescence, provokes a decrease in subjective control and self-regulation, increased impulsivity, and emotional instability. Qualitative and quantitative morphometric changes in the brain of adolescents can cause behavioral problems, impaired control and self-regulation, a sharp change in areas of cognitive interests, the inability to understand themselves and explain their actions. These features are a predictor of the successful socialization of adolescents. Socialization is seen as a process in which the adolescent acquires the skills necessary for his entire existence in society. Psychophysiological changes in his body determine the nature and characteristics of socialization, relationships with others, the nature of actions, and social contacts. An important feature that promotes the adaptive socialization of adolescents is assertiveness. Assertiveness as personal property of behavior primarily involves the development of confidence, determination, perseverance, self-esteem, empathy, communication skills. The formation of assertive behavior significantly increases the adaptation processes of adolescents, normalizes the emotional sphere, has a positive effect on socialization, and sets the vector of social success, self-actualization, and self-realization.

One of the key elements of Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is decreasing self-criticism as a secondary, maladaptive emotion within two-chair interventions while simultaneously increasing self-compassion and self-protection as primary, adaptive emotions. Though the concepts of self-compassion, self-protection, and self-criticism are highly acknowledged within psychotherapy research, the verbal articulation of these constructs within therapy sessions is underinvestigated. Thus, this qualitative study aims to examine how self-criticism, self-protection, and self-compassion are articulated by clients in EFT video sessions. Consensual qualitative research was used for data analysis performed by two core team members and one auditor. Three similar domains were considered for all three concepts: behavioural, emotional, and cognitive aspects. The number of self-protection statements was the highest among the states. The behavioural aspect was the most dominant domain for self-protection with the major subdomain ‘I tell you what I need’. For self-compassion, the cognitive aspect was the most significant domain containing eight subdomains, such as ‘I see your bad circumstances’. The most frequent domain for self-criticism was the behavioural aspect consisting of the two subdomains ‘I point out your wrong behaviours and I give you instructions’. The findings demonstrate the significance of promoting both self-compassion and self-protection to combat self-criticism. More studies of categorising a broader number of cases among various therapy approaches are necessary to develop a more detailed understanding of clients’ verbalisation of self-compassion, self-protection, and self-criticism within therapy. While the relationship between selfefficacy and mental health is doubtless highly context specific, some evidence has suggested this relationship may be positive: higher selfefficacy is associated with higher levels of well-being (Andersson et al., 2014;Huang et al., 2021;Parto, 2011). Objective Though there is a wide array of evidence that women's empowerment is associated with more positive health and nutritional outcomes for women and children, evidence around the relationship with mental health or subjective well-being remains relatively limited. The objective of this paper is to explore this relationship in longitudinal data from rural Burkina Faso. Methods We analyze the association between empowerment measured using the project-level Women's Empowerment in Agriculture Index (pro-WEAI), and two additional outcomes of interest: stress (measured using the SRQ-20) and maternal depression (measured using the Edinburgh scale for post-partum depression). The analysis employs both cross-sectional specifications and panel specifications conditional on individual fixed effects. Results We find evidence of substantial negative correlations between the empowerment score and maternal stress and depression measured using both continuous and binary variables. This relationship seems to be particularly driven by self-efficacy and respect among household members, where higher scores have negative associations with depression and stress that are both large in magnitude and precisely estimated. Conclusion Enhanced mental health may be another channel for a positive effect of empowerment on women's welfare.

Fake news is always diffused faster than true news, particularly on social media such as Facebook where everyone can freely share and comment on posts. This study aimed to identify fake news commenters’ belief and emotion towards fake news on Facebook, analyze their situational perceptions and communicative action towards fake news based on Situational Theory of Problem Solving (STOPS), and examine the association between the variables. A content analysis was conducted on 2189 comments derived from 45 fake news on Facebook between 2017 to 2019, Chi-Square Test was subsequently performed to analyze the association between the variables. The findings showed that there is an association between belief and emotion towards fake news - fake news non-believers tend to show negative emotion when they read fake news and commenters with negative emotion are more likely to claim that the news is fake compared to their counterpart. However, negative emotion is not significantly associated with proving the news is fake. Among the situational perceptions of STOPS that were significantly associated with communicative action, constraint recognition appeared to have the largest effect. The findings of this study provided recommendation to the collective efforts of multistakeholders in combating fake news.

Adolescents are required to be open and firm in expressing their opinions and thoughts to others without losing their self-confidence. However, the data shows that 3.69% still behave and speak dishonestly, 2.30% of students find it challenging to communicate. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between self-concept and student assertive behavior. This study uses a quantitative ex post facto method. The total population used is 101 students. The instrument used in this research is the self-concept scale and the students' assertive behavior scale. The reliability analysis using Cronbach's Alpha formula was obtained from the assertive behavior scale of 0.864, the self-concept scale of 0.894. This figure is then consulted with the product-moment table for N=34, with a 5% significance level of 0.339. The value of the coefficient of determination R2 generated is 0.284, which means that 28.4% of assertive behavior is influenced by self-concept, while the remaining 71.6% can be influenced by other variables not examined. BK teachers should provide guidance and counseling services according to the needs of students. Students who have a high category should be given individual counseling immediately. Students have difficulty in learning, so that it has an impact on low learning outcomes. The low student learning outcomes can be caused by the quality of learning, one of which is the lack of learning reference sources. The purpose of this study was analyze improvement of students' Biology learning outcomes before and after the application of internet use. This type of research is a quasi-experimental design through the Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The subjects in this study were students of class IX, which in this study used two classes, namely the control class and the experimental class. Learning in the control class is the usual lecture method, while in the experimental class it is done by applying the method of using the internet. The acquisition of learning outcomes data using the learning outcomes test (pretest-posttest). The hypothesis test using covariance analysis aims to determine whether there is an effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable. The results of the data obtained indicate that the effect of using the internet can improve student learning outcomes. The results of inferential statistical analysis obtained the value of Sig.count 0.000 with = 0.05. The results of the analysis indicate that the value of Sig.count is greater than (0.000 > 0.05) so Ho is rejected and H1 is accepted. So it can be concluded that in the learning process by utilizing the internet as a complement to conventional learning can improve student learning outcomes. Thus the internet as a learning resource can improve learning outcomes.

Although many empirical studies have aimed to find variances in positive mental health among different groups and the relationship between mental health and other variables, few studies examined the developmental trend of mental health levels and the cross-lagged relationship between self-efficacy, social rhythm, and mental health. Furthermore, few of them explored the interrelationship between self-efficacy and social rhythm among college students over time. This study thus aimed to clarify the longitudinal cross-lagged relationship between self-efficacy, social rhythm, and positive mental health among college students. A total of 764 students (627 females, mean age 21.03 ± 0.84 years at T1) participated in a 3-year-long study (T1, T2, T3) and were asked to complete the General Self-Efficacy, the Brief Social Rhythm, and the Positive Mental Health Scales. The results indicate that the development of positive mental health among college students showed an upward trend during those 3 years. There was a significant relationship between positive mental health, social rhythm, and self-efficacy. Positive mental health and social rhythm significantly predicted self-efficacy in the following year. Positive mental health in T2 could predict both T3 social rhythm marginally and T3 self-efficacy significantly. However, T1 social rhythm was not indirectly associated with T3 mental health via T2 self-efficacy, and T1 self-efficacy was not indirectly associated with T3 mental health via T2 social rhythm. This finding clarified the relationship between positive mental health, self-efficacy, and social rhythm, and provided evidence that positive mental health is the basis for self-efficacy and social rhythm among young adults. Therefore, school psychologists in universities should pay close attention to the positive mental health of young adults to form high levels of self-efficacy and social rhythm.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is common in older adults and may also be an early marker for future cognitive impairment. Depression is an important influencing factor for subjective cognitive decline in old age. However, the mediating effects of general self-efficacy in depression and subjective cognition are yet to be explored. This study included 308 participants who were ≥60 years. Participants were asked to complete the self-report measures of the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15), Subjective Cognitive Decline-Questionnaire (SCD-Q), and General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES). We used correlations, regressions, and structural equation models for the analyses. The bootstrapping method was performed to confirm the mediation effect. The subjective cognitive decline was found to be significantly and positively correlated to depression. Bootstrapping mediation analyses indicated that depression could affect SCD not only directly but also indirectly through general self-efficacy. General self-efficacy partly played a mediating role between depression and SCD. Hence, community workers and clinicians should actively help the elderly experiencing low levels of general self-efficacy to reduce their SCD.

The purpose of this paper is to determine the contribution of aspects of individual resilience in explaining risky sexual behaviors as a basis for evidence-based intervention planning to promote positive development/prevention of risky behaviours in young people. The sample of the study included 1,647 students from the Varaždin County, Croatia, and the age of the participants ranged from 14 to 19 years. To achieve the objectives of this work, descriptive statistics methods (arithmetic mean, frequencies) and a multivariate logistic regression mo del with a complex sample design were used. The data showed that 8.9% of adolescents reported having had sexual intercourse at the age of 14 years and 33.4% before the age of 16 years. Among adolescents who reported experience with sexual intercourse, 21% reported having had sexual intercourse with more than three partners, while 43.9% reported not always using condoms. The data showed that among the study participants, the most salient components of individual resilience were goals and aspirations and self-efficacy, while the least salient components were cooperation and communication and problem-solving skills. In addition, the multivariate logistic regression model conducted with a complex sample design revealed that cooperation and communication, self-efficacy, empathy, problem-solving skills, self-awareness, and goals and aspirations together could partly explain risky sexual behavior. The results suggest that the adolescents who rate their self-efficacy higher than others are more likely to belong to the risky sexual behavior group than to the non-risky sexual behavior group, while the adolescents who report having higher goals and aspirations are less likely to belong to the risky sexual behavior group than to the non-risky sexual behavior group. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Svrha ovog rada je utvrditi doprinos individualnih čimbenika otpornosti u objašnjenju rizičnog seksualnog ponašanja kao temelja planiranja znanstveno utemeljenih intervencija za promociju pozitivnog razvoja/prevenciju rizičnih ponašanja mladih. Istraživanje je provedeno na uzorku od 1 647 učenika iz Varaždinske županije, a raspon dobi kreće se od 14 do 19 godina. U svrhu ostvarivanja cilja ovog istraživanja, korištena je metoda deskriptivne statistike (aritmetička sredina, frekvencije odgovora) i multivarijantna logistička regresijska analiza s complex sampling dizajnom. Podaci pokazuju kako je 8,9% ispitivanih mladih imalo spolne odnose do 14. godine života, a 33,4% prije 16. godine života. Ujedno, 21% onih koji navode da su imali iskustvo spolnog odnosa imalo je više od 3 partnera, dok 43,9% mladih navodi da ne koriste uvijek kondome. Dobiveni podaci pokazuju da je od individualnih čimbenika otpornosti kod sudionika najviše izražena komponenta ciljevi i aspiracije te samoučinkovitost, dok su najmanje izražene komponente suradnja i komunikacija te rješavanje problema. Nadalje, provedenom multivarijantnom logističkom regresijskom analizom s complex sampling dizajnom utvrđeno je da se na temelju suradnje i komunikacije, samoučinkovitosti, empatije, rješavanja problema, samosvijesti te ciljeva i aspiracija zajedno može djelomično objasniti rizično seksualno ponašanje mladih. Rezultati pokazuju da je kod mladih koji svoju samoučinkovitost procjenjuju višom od drugih veća vjerojatnost pripadanja skupini seksualno rizičnih u odnosu na skupinu seksualnu nerizičnih sudionika, dok one koji procjenjuju da imaju više ciljeve i aspiracije od drugih obilježava manja vjerojatnost pripadanja skupini seksualno rizičnih u odnosu na skupinu seksualno nerizičnih sudionika.

The present study examined the effects of self-efficacy and social support on the mental health of 65 members of a mutual-aid organization in Hong Kong. Participants had anxiety and depressive problems and had received cognitive-behavioral treatment before they joined the mutual-aid groups in the organization. A three-wave design was adopted, and participants filled in measures including the General Health Questionnaire, the State Anxiety Inventory, the Centre of Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the General Self-efficacy Scale, and the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey. Regression analyses showed that residualized self-efficacy was a strong predictor of the mental health variables. Effects of social support, both functional and structural, were mainly mediated by self-efficacy.

Examines the dimensions underlying the applied problem-solving process, describes the development of a problem-solving instrument based on factor-analysis results, and delineates initial reliability and validity estimates of the instrument. Data were collected from 4 samples of students ( ns = 150, 62, 31, and 18). Factor analysis revealed 3 distinct constructs: Problem-Solving Confidence, Approach–Avoidance Style, and Personal Control. Reliability estimates of the 32 items revealed that the constructs were internally consistent and stable over time. Initial estimates of validity suggest that the instrument is measuring constructs that are (a) amenable to change through specific skill training in problem solving, (b) unrelated to conceptualizing means to solving hypothetical problems, (c) related to general perceptions of problem-solving skills, (d) unrelated to intelligence or social desirability, and (e) related to personality variables, most notably locus of control. The investigation has implications for research on the personal problem-solving process and provides an instrument that is easily administered and scored. This article presents an agentic theory of human development, adaptation, and change. The evolutionary emergence of advanced symbolizing capacity enabled humans to transcend the dictates of their immediate environment and made them unique in their power to shape their life circumstances and the courses their lives take. In this conception, people are contributors to their life circumstances, not just products of them. Social cognitive theory rejects a duality between human agency and social structure. People create social systems, and these systems, in turn, organize and influence people's lives. This article discusses the core properties of human agency, the different forms it takes, its ontological and epistemological status, its development and role in causal structures, its growing primacy in the coevolution process, and its influential exercise at individual and collective levels across diverse spheres of life and cultural systems. © 2006 Association for Psychological Science.

This study sought to determine the extent to which generalized self-efficacy and problem orientation overlap as predictors of psychological and physical functioning (e.g., life satisfaction, vulnerability to illness) in a sample of 192 college students. Results of correlational analyses indicated that generalized self-efficacy and problem orientation are related, but are not redundant with each other. Moreover, results of conducting hierarchical regression analyses indicated that although generalized self-efficacy is an important predictor of psychological and physical functioning, problem orientation, specifically, negative problem orientation added incremental validity in predicting additional unique variance in measures of functioning. Implications of the present findings are discussed.

In this article, I review the diverse ways in which perceived self-efficacy contributes to cognitive development and functioning. Perceived self-efficacy exerts its influence through four major processes. They include cognitive, motivational, affective, and selection processes. There are three different levels at which perceived self-efficacy operates as an important contributor to academic development. Students' beliefs in their efficacy to regulate their own learning and to master academic activities determine their aspirations, level of motivation, and academic accomplishments. Teachers' beliefs in their personal efficacy to motivate and promote learning affect the types of learning environments they create and the level of academic progress their students achieve. Faculties' beliefs in their collective instructional efficacy contribute significantly to their schools' level of academic achievement. Student body characteristics influence school-level achievement more strongly by altering faculties' beliefs in their collective efficacy than through direct affects on school achievement.

In this study assertiveness as a moderator of stress reactions among women was examined. Specifically, the experimenters examined how high and low assertive women cognitively appraised, affectively and physiologically responded to, and behaviorally coped with the stress of giving an impromptu speech. High assertive women appraised the speech stressor as challenging, whereas low assertive women appraised the stressor as threatening. High assertive women also had a challenge pattern of autonomic response during the task, compared with the threat response of low assertive women. Afterward, the high assertive women reported experiencing less stress and negative emotion and greater positive emotion than did the low assertive women. Overall, the high assertive women's stress-related reactions indicated challenge, whereas the low assertive women's reactions indicated threat (see J. Tomaka, J. Blascovich, R. M. Kelsey, & C. L. Administered the Wolpe-Lazarus Assertiveness Scale to three groups of South African nurses (N = 108)—African, Indian, and European—who were matched in terms of age, sex, education, occupation, and language competence. A significant difference (F = 6.12, p < .01) was found between the three groups: the Europeans (Whites) were the most assertive and the Indians the least. Factor analysis revealed that the scale was multi- rather than unidimensional and that a different factor structure from each group. The culture-bound and situation-specific nature of the concept of assertiveness is discussed.
