Abstract and Figures

This chapter provides a description of the past and recent development of conservation agriculture (CA) in Europe. It reviews scientific and technical literature as well as empirical evidence reported by the European Conservation Agriculture Federation (ECAF) and its national member associations. Starting from the early beginnings of CA in Europe, this chapter reviews the development of CA until its current status. This clearly indicates that Europe lags far behind other regions in the world in terms of the adoption and spread of CA. This chapter presents actual data of adoption in several European countries as far as it is reported by national CA associations. It also reviews the most relevant experiences gained throughout Europe, focussing on crop performance, impact on soil quality, and weed, insects and disease incidence, as well as environmental and economic aspects of CA. Challenges and possible reasons for the relatively low uptake of CA in Europe are discussed, including the influence of national and European agricultural policies and regulations on the past evolution of CA uptake in Europe. Finally, this chapter provides an outlook into future prospects for up-scaling of CA in Europe, and what the likely impact of global changes and constraints may mean for the adoption and spread of CA in Europe.

Prototype agriculture is facing several socio-economic and environmental challenges regarding sustainable livelihood and food security, particularly for marginal and small households in India. Soil erosion, nutrient mining, dwindling water tables and declining biodiversity are currently the most serious problems in the long run agricultural sustainability in the country. However, the motive of this research is to determine the financial impact of conservation agriculture in West Bengal temporally as an alternative solution to those issues. The study compares the overall economic change of system productivity and returns cost ratio under conservation agricultural farms with respect to conventional farming situations over two years using the Differences in Difference (DID) method of estimation. The results depicted that the changes in the SREY of conservation agriculture over conventional farms have increased from 4944.88 kg ha-1 in 2019-20 to 8479.95 kg ha-1 in 2020-21 with an overall gain of 3535.07 kg ha-1 over two years. Over the two-year study period, the overall change in system net return and system B: C ratio for conservation agriculture compared to conventional farms was increased to Rs.1,09,105/-and Rs. 0.38 per hectare. Barring organic manure use, conservation agriculture has utilized less tillage, less inputs, less mechanization and less manpower. Finally, the estimated change in system productivity over two years was recorded 69.13% gain in conservation farms with respect to conventional cultivation practices featuring a successful implementation of conservation agriculture in the state.

Crop diversification practices (CDPs) are alternative strategies aimed to achieve sustainable cropping systems and food production overcoming the agro-environmental impacts of conventional cropping systems such as monoculture. Thus, this paper aims to improve the knowledge of implementing CDPs in different European pedoclimatic regions by assessing the economic performance at the farm level. CDPs are compared with conventional cropping systems and clustered in terms of their gross margin (GM) results and variations. Farm-level assessment shows that CDPs provide positive economic results, representing an adaptive management strategy for ecological transition, without compromising economic sustainability. Particularly, the main findings show that (1) the impact of diversification depends more on crop type than on the selected CDPs, (2) most farms exhibited a low GM with low economic impact, and (3) there is a great likelihood that the CDPs facilitate the buildup of more resilient farming systems.

The abundance and dynamics of pests in maize crop are influenced by the tillage system. The research has been done at Research and Development Station for Agriculture Turda (RDSA Turda) in order to estimation the insect populations in conventional tillage (plowing) and minimum tillage system (with chisel variant). The research consisted of observations and determinations on the monitoring, abundance and dynamics of the most common species pests of maize crop: Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, Autographa gamma L. and Agrotis segetum Den. & Schiff. The pests monitoring, with economically importance for maize crop was evaluated using F-1 pheromone traps, with synthetic sex pheromones (atraGAM- 9, atraSEG-21 and atraVIRG). By minimizing the tillage, there has been an increase in the pest population, especially in Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte. An almost perfect synchronization of the first generation with the optimal threshold of specific temperatures for insect biology was observed in the three monitored species. This meens even if, these mechanisms were formed over the course of evolution exist a permanent adaptations of insects to climate changes.

Agricultural productivity impacts the environment and natural resources in various ways. The severity of these impacts has triggered the emergence of natural resource management and the related, highly criticized science of agroecology. Vegetable production has known environmental impacts. However, the extent of its participation in sustainable production has not been adequately explored. This review sought to explore the spaciotemporal position of vegetables in a suite of existing sustainable agricultural practices, explore regional variations and discover lessons that can guide the future of vegetable production. There are regional differences regarding sustainable production practices and the associated barriers to their adoption. Generally, sustainable agricultural practices with a societal history in a region tend to be successful, unlike when they are “new” innovations. The major barriers to sustainable agricultural practices in vegetable production are economy-related (total investment cost) and crop-related and are also related to the technology transmission approaches. Unfulfilled expectations and a lack of community participation in technology development are noted challenges, which have led to dis-adoption. A farmer-centered approach to technology promotion could help. Comparatively, southern Africa has the most challenges in the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. From the lessons learned from other regions, agroecology in vegetable cultivation is not unachievable in Africa. The projected challenges mean that sustainable vegetable production is inevitable.

The environmental fate of glyphosate and its metabolite AMPA were investigated in buried lysimeters in a factorial combination of two cropping systems (conservation and conventional agriculture) and two water table depths (120 and 60 cm). Glyphosate was applied at a rate of 1.44 kg ha − 1 a.i., and pore-water was sampled for 48 non-consecutive days along the soil profile (15, 30 and 60 cm) as well as the groundwater. Glyphosate and AMPA concentration in soil was detected to compare the effect of different soil-crop managements on transformation/ dissipation dynamics and a full characterization of the soil profile was performed. Freundlich adsorption coefficients were calculated down to 110 cm depth and correlated to laboratory-estimated soil properties. Clay minerals, soil organic carbon, phosphate content, Al and Fe amount were the driving factors influencing most of the glyphosate sorption, regardless of the crop and water management system that did not differentiate between adsorption dynamics. In contrast, conservation practices differently affected glyphosate concentration in the soil profile, although its adoption was limited to two years. Moreover, the occurrence of a shallow water table influenced glyphosate transport in the vadose zone, and its detection in groundwater supported the hypothesis of fast transport of the molecule as mediated by preferential pathways, compromising groundwater quality, especially in agricultural lands. On the contrary, AMPA has never been detected in the groundwater, giving evidence of a diverse adsorption and transport dynamic compared to glyphosate.

Conservation Agriculture includes practices focused on the conservation and the restoration of main soil features, such as organic carbon content, structure, and biological diversity and activity. Our study was conducted in three farms in North-Eastern Italy in pairs of closely located fields to compare conservation agriculture (no tillage, cover cropping) with conventional agriculture. Differences in terms of soil enzymatic activity, such as FDA and β-glucosidase through spectrophotometric analyses, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents, total organic carbon, and nitrogen contents with CNS Elemental Analyzer and soil arthropod community via the QBS-ar index were investigated. Enzymatic activities resulted to be readily and positively affected by conservation agriculture whereas total and microbial carbon, nitrogen contents, and microarthropod community seemed to be more dependent on the time factor. The responses to conservation agriculture differed between the three farms, pointing out that differences in soil features may drive the effectiveness of conservation management. N stock, maybe dependent on previous soil management, might be the key characteristic able to influence soil evolution in the studied conditions. The present results could be helpful to predict soil reaction to sustainable agriculture in short periods.

Reinforcing the small water cycle is considered to be a holistic approach to both water resource and landscape management. In an agricultural landscape, this can be accomplished by incorporating agricultural conservation practices; their incorporation can reduce surface runoff, increase infiltration, and increase the water holding capacity of a soil. Some typical agricultural conservation practices include: conservation tillage, contour farming, residue incorporation, and reducing field sizes; these efforts aim to keep both water and soil in the landscape. The incorporation of such practices has been extensively studied over the last 40 years. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to model two basins in the Czech Republic (one at the farm-scale and a second at the management-scale) to determine the effects of agriculture conservation practice adoption at each scale. We found that at the farm-scale, contour farming was the most effective practice at reinforcing the small water cycle, followed by residue incorporation. At the management-scale, we found that the widespread incorporation of agricultural conservation practices significantly reinforced the small water cycle, but the relative scale and spatial distribution of their incorporation were not reflected in the SWAT scenario analysis. Individual farmers should be incentivized to adopt agricultural conservation practices, as these practices can have great effects at the farm-scale. At the management-scale, the spatial distribution of agricultural conservation practice adoption was not significant in this study, implying that managers should incentivize any adoption of such practices and that the small water cycle would be reinforced regardless.

Tillage is the most important age old practice, which is usefull to create favourable seed bed for sowing of seeds. It also plays a significant role in weed species persistence and its distribution in agriculture fields. Summer plough kills the weed seeds by exposing it to the sun light. Deep tillage helps for the development of enforced dormancy by burring the newly shredded seeds in the deeper layer of soil. Till now no herbicide is available to kill the weed seeds, tillage improves nitrogen mineralization thus in turn enhance the germination of weed seeds. After weed seed’s germination, controlling can be done easily with either spraying of herbicides, mechanical and manual means. Now a day’s conservation tillage or zero tillage concept is getting picking up. So it is highly important to study the effect of reduced tillage on weeds. Most of the research evidences found that under reduced tillage condition, weed seed accumulation is higher in upper layer of the soil. Annual weed population is predominant in reduced or no tilled soil. In no tillage system before planting soil was applied with non-persistent non selective herbicides to control weeds effectively.

Conservation agriculture is a crop-cultivation strategy that aims for a high and viable product, good quality, and financial rewards while also being environmentally friendly. Conserving soil and water are at the core of this process. The present century is demonstrating a time of enormous transformation for Indian agriculture. Agrarian commodity prices are low, economic support structures are shaky, and the threat of ever-lower trade blockades will add to the financial feasibility and keenness of Indian farming systems. Farmers are responsible for not just producing food grains, but also for caring for the surrounding community. Development of agriculture is a technique to increase food crops that sets out to attain maximum productivity for higher monetary return whereas preserving the basic natural resources viz., soil and water. The importance is on enriching natural biological processes both above and below ground. The main trend in tillage for winter wheat growing the past 3-4 decades has been the introduction and increased use of pto-powered harrows for secondary tillage. A comprehensive survey of soil characteristics in Danish winter wheat fields showed that the use of rotary harrows significantly affects soil structure. The stability of soil aggregates is weakened which increases the risk of clay dispersion and slaking at the soil surface. An increased mobilization of clay colloids may also have significant influence on the potential translocation of clay particles to lower horizons and the aquatic environment. However, this environmental aspect is beyond the scope of this report. The net effect on crop yield of the increased energy application to soil through the rotary harrow seems to be negligible. This is the conclusion from the above-mentioned survey as well as from a range of field experiments. Non-inversion tillage systems have been introduced and are covering an increasing area especially for the last decade. Field experiments have shown that the yield of winter wheat is not significantly affected by the lack of ploughing when wheat follows a “healthy” crop in the rotation (e.g. pea or winter rape). The most common practice in reduced tillage is some kind of stubble harrowing to 5-15 cm depth prior to sowing of the seeds. This seems to loosen the soil enough to reduce the negative impact of the densification of morainic soils when they are not ploughed. If grass weeds are controlled by herbicides, the yield of winter wheat is about the same as for ploughed soil. The area with no-ploughing tillage is less than 10%. It is therefore concluded that the net effect of tillage on the yield of winter wheat yields in Denmark during the last 3-4 decades only to a small extent has been affected by tillage system.

Under Mediterranean conditions, soils under conventional tillage farming usually have very low contents of organic matter. This situation is due to intensive soil tillage, low biomass production under rainfed conditions, and removal of cereal straw for alternative use off the field. In order to study strategies to improve soil organic matter content (SOM), a long term experiment (11 years) was established in 1995 to evaluate the effect of four different tillage systems (conventional tillage (CT) based on moldboard plough (25 cm) + disc harrow with removal of cereal straw; reduced tillage (RT) based on non-inversion tine cultivation with removal of cereal straw; no-till (NT) with removal of cereal straw; and no-till with cereal straw retained (NT+S). The crop rotation was lupine – wheat – forage oat – barley. Soil organic carbon (SOC) (0-30 cm) and crop yields (grain and straw) were measured every year. In addition, yield response of the wheat crop to nitrogen fertilization was studied, in order to evaluate the interactions with SOC accumulation. Under CT and RT, SOC remained almost unchanged over the experimental period. NT improved SOC by 18% in relation to CT and NT+S increased SOC by 62%. There were no significant differences between CT and NT in the amount of residues left in the field over the experimental period, but NT+S significantly increased the amount of residues retained in relation to the other treatments. The results indicate that NT reduced SOM mineralization, but that maximum increase of SOC can only be achieved if crop residues are retained on the field. Nitrogen use efficiency was significantly improved with greater SOC contents, i.e. from 19.1 kg of wheat per kg of applied N at 0.58% SOC to 104 kg of wheat per kg of applied N at 1.74% SOC.

This review would aid in learning from the past experience regarding the success or otherwise of CA. Knowledge gained from this volume should further help in the implementation of CA and in the understanding of the role and importance of CA to secure sustainable crop intensification for the benefit of future generations as well. The challenges in implementing CA that need to be resolved through future research and development for a larger scale support and the spread of CA are considered.

No-tillage cropping systems and concepts have evolved rapidly since the early 1960s and are attracting attention worldwide. The rapid growth and interest is associated with increasing pressures for food production from a fixed land resource base with degrading effects of erosion, soil compaction and other factors becoming more noticeable. Research programs have provided many answers and identified new technology needed for success of the no-tillage crop production system in the past two decades and this has resulted in a rapid rate of adoption. Farmers played an important role in the early stages· of development of the system and continue to play an important role in its improvement and rapid rate of adoption. This book provides an inventory and assessment of the principles involved in no-tillage concepts and addresses the application of the technology to practical production schemes. Selected authors and contributors have long been associated either in no-tillage research or application. They represent many disciplines interfacing with the complex interactions of soil, plant and environment. Personal obser­ vations by the authors in many geographic sectors of the world indicate the principles to be valid but application of the principles to be less uniform. The application of no-tillage principles requires considerable modification as variations in soil and/or climatic condi­ tions are encountered in different regions of the world.

With the background of political concerns, land utilisation is confronted with the serious need for the protection of soil fauna, landscape, climate and water quality more strongly now than ever before. In public discussions, agriculture is increasingly exposed to reproach, destroying «natural soil fertility», because of today’s sensitivity to ecological damage. In addition, the intensity of soil tillage is looked at more critically. Besides the visible signs of soil fertility loss, e.g. soil erosion by water and wind, soil sealing and crusting of the soil surface, there are other problems, including deep soil compaction, reduced water infiltration and deep root penetration, reduced organic matter content of the soil, high emission rates of CO2 through fast biological oxidation of organic matter and through high fuel consumption as well as drinking water pollution by leaching and run-off of nitrate, water soluble phosphate and other xenobiotica that contribute to overall environmental quality.

Both urban and rural land use are considered, including discussions of lawns, greenhouse soils and turfgrass. After a beginners' guide, there are introductory chapters on: soil formation; physical properties; soil water; soil organic matter; soil mineralogy, and soil chemistry. Slug problems have increased in frequency as conservation tillage has become a more widely adapted practice for production of corn, Zea mays (L.), and soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, in the Midwest. Because of the increasing concern about slug damage to these crops, we initiated studies to aid growers in management of this serious pest. Slug populations were sampled in conservation-tillage fields in seven counties in Ohio from 1994-1996 to determine the species that were present in field crops and to gain insights into their life histories and damage potential. Four slug species were collected in numbers sufficient to be considered of potential economic importance. The predominant species in population size and geographic range were Deroceras reticulatum (Muller), followed closely by D. leave (Muller). Both species were common in most fields. The third most numerous slug species was Arion subfuscus (Drapamaud). Although this species was found in fewer fields, it was often collected in very large numbers. The fourth slug. A. fasciatus (Nilsson), was found only in two counties. We observed juvenile D. reticulatum causing the most damage by their feeding in late-May and in June. Damage caused by the other species was not as evident, with the possible exception of A. subfuscus causing stand loss in soybeans.
