Abstract

Hybridization tests were conducted between the geographically separated Scaphiopus couchi and S. h. holbrooki to determine relative viability of the hybrid embryos as compared with that of the control embryos of the parent species. If the male parent is holbrooki, viability was found to be approximately 24% less than that of the control. The reciprocal cross does not succeed. In backcrosses hybrids showed a drastic reduction of fertility, but female F1 hybrids appear to be more fertile than males.
