COLABORAÇÃO CIENTÍFICA EM ADMINISTRAÇÃO: ANÁLISE DAS PUBLICAÇÕES EM COAUTORIA NO BRASIL NO PERÍODO 2000-2010

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

... In Brazil, Ferreira, Canela, Pinto and Falaster (2018) concluded that the increasing challenge in publishing in higher quality journals and the perception of pressure to publish had induced the scientific collaboration in the management field. Empirical evidence showed a growth in the percentage of co-authored papers (Espartel et al., 2013), a high level of Network centrality analysis fragmentation in the network (Cruz et al., 2011) and a predominance of well-defined clusters interconnected through few intermediaries (Rossoni, & Guarido Filho, 2009). Moreover, most co-authors belonged to the same institution (Espartel et al., 2013), which is alarming, once heterogeneous networks were determinant in achieving better scientific production in business schools (Orozco & Villaveces, 2015). ...

... Rossoni & Guarido Filho (2007) asserted that the location of Brazilian institutions was a significant factor in the determination of collaborative relationships. In terms of geography, the institutions in the south and southeast of the country stand out (Espartel et al., 2013;Sidone, Haddad, & Mena-Chalco, 2016;Wood, & Chueke, 2008). Thus, we emphasize the importance of considering geographical peculiarities in the analysis of collaboration networks in Brazil, as the Brazilian scientific production is not equally distributed. ...

Purpose This study aims to analyze how gender, research experience and geography are related to the researchers’ importance in the co-authorship network on management and accounting in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach A social network based on the co-authorship relationships in the papers published in leading Brazilian journals was examined using a logit model to estimate the probability of occupying prevailing positions. Findings The findings showed a network with a high level of fragmentation and a scarcity of authors serving as gatekeepers. Based on the number of directed links and collaboration with influential and well-connected authors, men were more likely to occupy central positions than women. Authors with higher academic degrees tended to establish more links but were more likely to distance from other authors. In terms of geography, authors from more- and less-favored regions may report similar propensity to occupy central positions. Practical implications Decision-makers should consider the importance of strengthening collaboration between different research groups and encourage female participation in broader collaborative networks. Research evaluation bodies should strengthen incentives regarding interinstitutional partnerships. Originality/value Studies on collaborative networks in management and accounting sciences are less common and generally focus on describing the networks. This paper combines social network analysis and econometric procedures to analyze the relationship between demographic and geographical aspects, and distinct network centrality indexes.

The authors analyze the publications of four major marketing journals on the basis of their diversity relative to each other, against their mission statements, and over time. One important finding is that the journals that make no claim to diversity tend to be quite diverse, while the one that strives to be diverse does not seem to achieve its goal. A second major finding is that each of the four journals has a distinct character that is not necessarily the one intended by its mission or its editors. A third major finding is that these patterns are generally stable over time and tend to persist even in the face of efforts and pleas by its editors for change.

Article
This article examines the nature of finance faculty members' coauthoring experiences. The faculty members were asked to provide information about their most recent coauthoring experience that resulted in an article being accepted for publication in a refereed journal. The vast majority of the respondents had a very recent coauthoring experience, for 84 percent of respondents indicated a publication date for their most recent coauthored article of 1994-1996. Almost all of the articles were written by two or three authors, and nearly 40 percent of the coauthoring teams were all from the same institution. Three-quarters of the coauthors had worked together previously. The faculty was overwhelmingly positive about their most recent coauthoring experiences. The faculty agreed that coauthoring improved the quality of the work, productivity was increased by coauthoring, they would work again with the same persons, and coauthoring was a very positive experience. Improving the quality of the research has been cited by several others as a primary advantage of coauthoring and this factor received the highest ratings from finance faculty as well. Quality improvements may be the biggest advantage of coauthoring.

The objective of this article is to study the bargaining behavior of coauthors in multiauthored marketing papers. The literature argues that the order of author names sends a signal about their relative contribution to the article, and the signal is muted when the names are in alphabetical order. In addition, other things being the same, the literature also stipulates that alphabetization increases with article quality. The authors examine these hypotheses with publication data from a set of marketing journals during 1991-2000. The findings suggest that signaling is more important for less known authors, authors from less prestigious schools, for articles published in lower-rated journals, and when there are more coauthors.

All business faculty should be interested in the circumstances under which the most productive academic authors publish their work. This is because success in publishing connects closely with universities' decisions on tenure and promotion and with opportunities for merit-based pay increases and alternative employment. The purpose of the present study was to examine the characteristics of published articles by the most productive authors of accounting literature with particular attention to levels of collaboration. The results indicate that prolific authors of accounting literature become more productive and produce longer articles by working with others. However, such prolific authors appear to decrease the number of coauthors on their higher quality publications, possibly to increase the quality of their reputation. From these findings, the present authors derive implications for faculty and provide concluding comments.

This study extends a recent paper by Jean Louis Heck and Peter A. Zaleski [1991] on trends in economics journal publication from 1969–89. The primary purpose of the work is to analyze the impact on article production of an observed dramatically increasing tendency toward coauthorship among scholars in economics. A simple model is tested with total (per capita) articles as a function of time, American Economic Association (AEA) membership, and articles coauthored per year. Results suggest that the increasing trend toward coauthorship enhances productivity in total and per-capita article production.

In recent decades there has been growing interest in the nature and scale of scientific collaboration. Studies into co-authorship have taken two different approaches. The first one attempts to analyse the reasons why authors collaborate and the consequences of such decision (Laband and Tollison, 2000). The second approach is based on the idea that co-authorship creates a social network of researchers (Barabasi et al., 2002; Moody, 2004; Newman, 2001). In this study we have carried out an exploratory analysis of co-authorships in the field of management from the two aforementioned approaches. The results obtained show a growing tendency of the co-authored papers in the field of management, similar to what can be observed in other disciplines. Our study analyses some of the underpinning factors, which have been highlighted in the literature, explaining this tendency. Thus, the progressive quantitative character of research and the influence of the collaboration on the articles' impact are enhanced. The network analysis permits the exploration of the peculiarities of the management in comparison with other fields of knowledge, as well as the existing linkages between the most central and prominent authors within this discipline.

This paper introduces a team-based model of researchers in a specialty and investigates the mani- festation of such teams in a specialty's literature. The proposed qualitative behavioral model, with its mathematical expression as a growth model, is significant because it simultaneously describes the two phenomena of collaboration and author productivity (Lotka's law) in a specialty. The model is nested: a team process models the creation of research teams and the success-breeds- success process of their production of papers, while at a lower level the productivity of authors within teams is also modeled as a success-breeds-success process. Inter-team collaboration (weak ties) is modeled as random events. This simple growth model is shown to faithfully mimic six network metrics of bipartite paper-author networks. The model is demonstrated on three example paper collections from specialties that have a wide range of degree of collaboration: 1) a distance education collection with low collaboration degree, 2) a complex networks collection with typical collaboration degree, and 3) an atrial ablation collection with heavy collaboration degree.

We chronicle the use of acknowledgments in 20th century chemistry by analyzing and classifying over 2,000 specimens covering a 100-year period. Our results show that acknowledgment has gradually established itself as a constitutive element of academic writing--one that provides a revealing insight into the structural nature of subauthorship collaboration in science. Complementary data on rates of coauthorship are also presented to highlight the growing importance of teamwork and the increasing division of labor in contemporary chemistry. The results of this study are compared with the findings of a parallel study of collaboration in both the social sciences and the humanities.
