Lepanthes elvirae is reminiscent of L. estrellensis in the large size of the flower and the broad and rounded laminae of the lip, but can be distinguished from the latter by the glabrous sheaths of the ramicaul, the petals with lobes distinctly different in size and the lobes of the lip held subparallel to the column. Lepanthes queveriensisis most similar to L. cribbii, from which it differs by the inflorescence sub equal to longer than the leaf, the margins of the sepals entire, the shorter body of the lip, provided with two hemielliptic, low, and the rectangular, straight appendix of the lip. Historically, the isthmus of Costa Rica and Panama has been a source of fascination for its strategic position linking North America to South America. In terms of biodiversity, the isthmus is considered one of the richest regions in the world. Orchidaceae is the most diverse plant family in the area, and the number of species is triple that of other well-represented angiosperm families such as Rubiaceae, Fabaceae and Poaceae. Though we are still far from knowing the exact number of orchid species occurring extant in both countries nowadays, at present the orchid flora reported for Costa Rica (1574 spp.) and Panama (1372 spp.) summarise together about 2010 species; which represents 6.5-8.0% of all orchid species on just about 1% of the Earth's land surface. Pleurothallidinae and Laeliinae are the most species rich groups and contain the largest genera: Lepanthes, Pleurothallis, Stelis and Epidendrum. These groups significantly outnumber the other genera recorded in terms of species richness. Some factors explaining this regional taxonomic diversity of orchids are the natural land bridge uniting three of the 25 recognized hotspots worldwide (Mesoamerica, Choco/Darien/Western Ecuador and tropical Andes), the climatic influence of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and the recent lifting of the Cordillera de Talamanca and the formation of foothills of Majé, Darien and San Blas in Panama and western Colombia. Although these factors can explain the high diversity in general terms, detailed information is needed to understand species diversification as well as the evolution of the floristic composition. Updated floristic inventories (yielding a rate of 25 new species/year) and the study of biological mechanisms that have led to the evolutionary diversification of Lepanthes (one of the major groups of orchids) are the main ongoing research projects to elucidate the evolution of Orchidaceae in Costa Rica and Panama. Towards this end, we present some preliminary results of the research conducted in this direction including the integration of phylogenetics, pollination ecology, taxonomy and biogeography. reSumen: Históricamente, el Istmo de Costa Rica y Panamá ha sido fuente de fascinación por su posición estratégica, uniendo América del Norte con América del Sur. En términos de biodiversidad, el Istmo es considerado una de las regiones más ricas del mundo. Orchidaceae es la familia de plantas más diversa en la zona, y el número de especies triplica a otras familias de angiospermas bien representadas como Rubiaceae, Fabaceae y Poaceae. Lepanthes is one of the most species-rich genera of angiosperms in the neotropics. Here, we describe and illustrate two new species of Lepanthes from Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica. Lepanthes crucitasensis, sp. nov. resembles L. confusa, from which it can be distinguished by longer and wider leaves and flowers with entire margin sepals, longer lateral sepals, longer upper lobe and lip with glabrous appendix. Lepanthes adenophora sp. nov. is similar to L. crucitasensis, but it is distinguished by the narrower leaves, always green, shorter inflorescences, pink scarlet petals with a yellow center and with the upper and lower lobe of different lengths, lip not surpassing the column, appendix with glandular trichomes and obovoid-elliptic pollinia. Micromorphologically, the petals of L. adenophora are pubescent or papillose–hispid. Both new species conform a clade closely related to two species from montane forests, suggesting that some lineages can potentially survive or adapt to warmer habitats. Our results demonstrate that alpha-taxonomic studies are pivotal for uncovering phylogenetic relationships in poorly sampled neotropical orchid groups.

A new species of Lepanthes from the Western Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, characterized by similar triangular sepals with a large and protruding column, is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to Lepanthes pelorostele from Ecuador, but can be distinguished from the latter by having orange and ciliate sepals and larger petals and lip. reSuMen. Se describe e ilustra una nueva especie de Lepanthes de la Cordillera Occidental de los Andes colom-bianos caracterizada por tener sépalos triangulares similares y una columna sobresaliente. Esta nueva especie es similar a Lepanthes pelorostele, de Ecuador, pero se puede distinguir de esta última por tener sépalos ciliados, anaranjados y pétalos y labelo más grandes.

We revise and characterize the group of species close to Lepanthes guatemalensis. The group comprises eight species in Costa Rica. Three new species are described and illustrated. Lepanthes durikäensis is distinguished by the non resupinate flowers, the lateral sepals ovate with the apical tails diverging, the lower lobe of petals lanceolate-subfalcate, up-curved and the pinkish column. Lepanthes leporina is recognized by the resupinate flowers with yellow sepals, faintly suffused with red, the petals violet, the lip orange, the bifid synsepal with the apices of the lateral sepals not forming tails, the lateral sepals subequal to the dorsal sepal, the petals markedly convex with the upper lobe elliptic-lanceolate and the lobes of the lip connivent at apex. Lepanthes sanctiorum is characterized by the small plants less than 1.1 cm tall, the short peduncle less than 10 mm long, the petals as wide as the lip length and the blades of the lip distinctly diverging at apex. All the species are described and illustrated on the basis of Costa Rican material. A key to the species of the group is provided.

Lepanthes arenasiana from the Talamanca range in Costa Rica is described and illustrated. It is most similar to L. lancifolia but differs in having denticulate sepals, the petals with the upper lobe oblong, narrowing at apex and terminating as a short apicule, and the lower lobe basally ovate and straight, filiform towards the apex. rEsuMEn: Se describe e ilustra Lepanthes arenasiana de la Cordillera de Talamanca en Costa Rica. Recent advances in orchid DNA barcoding and molecular phylogeny have increased over the past few years. The need for rigorously delimited specific concepts and the development of an integrative taxonomic system intended to place molecular information within the context of morphological, ecological, and physiological knowledge are the main reasons for which traditional taxonomy should constitute the basis of future molecular works. This is the first in a series of manuscripts to focus on discrete groups of Neotropical orchid taxa, providing full and comparable species descriptions and illustrations for taxonomic discussion. Here, we revise the Lepanthes jimenezii group, in which Lepanthes caroli-lueri and Lepanthes pulcherrima are described. Lepanthes jimenezii is lectotypified and a key to the species is provided based on morphological characters.

We revise and characterize the group of species close to Lepanthes ovalis. Three new species from Costa Rica are described and illustrated. Lepanthes dikoensis Bogarín & C.M. Sm., sp. nov. is similar to L. viridis but differs mainly by the smaller leaves (to 4 cm long) and smaller flowers (to 6.5 mm in diameter), the glabrous petals with the lower lobe ovate, falcate, shorter than the lobes of the lip, both lobes yellow with red-orange and scarlet, the lip scarlet, apically yellowish and the appendix oblong Lepanthes expansilabia Bogarín & C.M. Sm., sp. nov. is similar to L. erinacea but differs by the pendent plants, the petals with the lobes oblong, subsimilar, the lower lobe yellow, the lip spreading with the lobes separated and not touching each other, leaving the appendix exposed. Lepanthes tarrazuensis Bogarín & D. Jiménez, sp. nov. is similar to L. seegeri but differs in the glabrous petals, the lip glabrous with ciliate apices, the upper lobe of petals truncate, without lobules at the inner apical corner, the petals and lip basally red, tinged with yellow-orange at apex, the blades of the lip touching each other above the column and the appendix shorter, not extending far from the column. An illustration of L. erinacea, a key to the species of the group and a table summarizing the differences between the Costa Rican taxa are provided.
