John Gwyn Jeffreys was one of the top molluscan taxonomists and collectors in the 1800s and was one of the pioneers in deep-sea dredging. The results of his work can be seen in his papers, namely those of the cruises of the Lightning, Porcupine, Valorous and Knight Errant, which are still relevant today. He was taught how to collect shells by one of his teachers and at the age of 19 was encouraged by Dillwyn, renowned conchologist, to write his first scientific paper. At the age of 20 he became an elected fellow of the Linnaean Society. Jeffreys went on to write over 200 papers, describe 41 new genera and 585 new species.
