Comparison of geometry curricula with respect to objectives and content in India and England for the age group 14 to 16 years

In this essay, the author compares the teaching of geometry in India and England to students between the age group 14 to 16 years. This is called the secondary stage in India and the Key stage 4 in England. This comparison examines general and specific objectives of the two countries' curricula and their respective cultural influences. Historical background of any country reflects in its educational curricula. Hence, initially she offers a short comparison of historical perspectives of mathematics education in both the countries which leads us to comprehend the present scenario and hence the objectives of an educational system.

Exorcising Demonolatry: Spelling Patterns and Pedagogies in College Writing

Since the rise of college-level spelling instruction, pedagogies have been few, based primarily on “demon lists” of spelling words and injunctions to students about developing “informed doubt.” This study examines spelling instruction historically, then describes a large-scale analysis done in 1986 of the spelling errors found in 3,000 nationally gathered and stratified student essays. [Show full abstract] of this research is a new and somewhat unusual “demon list” indicating that the most commonly misspelled words are homophones, spellings based on pronunciation, and visual errors. The study then examines the changes wrought in student spelling by the advent of word processing with and without associated spell-checking, examining 100 word-processed essays with and 100 without spell-checking. This research indicates that word processing greatly increases the number of spelling errors unless spell-checking is used. The study concludes by exploring the question of what the future may hold for spelling pedagogies.

Characterizing Reading Comprehension of Mathematical Texts

This study compares reading comprehension of three different texts: two mathematical texts and one historical text. The two mathematical texts both present basic concepts of group theory, but one does it using mathematical symbols and the other only uses natural language. A total of 95 upper secondary and university students read one of the mathematical texts and the historical text. Before ... [Show full abstract] reading the texts, a test of prior knowledge for both mathematics and history was given and after reading each text, a test of reading comprehension was given. The results reveal a similarity in reading comprehension between the mathematical text without symbols and the historical text, and also a difference in reading comprehension between the two mathematical texts. This result suggests that mathematics in itself is not the most dominant aspect affecting the reading comprehension process, but the use of symbols in the text is a more relevant factor. Although the university students had studied more mathematics courses than the upper secondary students, there was only a small and insignificant difference between these groups regarding reading comprehension of the mathematical text with symbols. This finding suggests that there is a need for more explicit teaching of reading comprehension for texts including symbols.

Döneminde baş tacı edilen kasidenin, değişen edebi beğeni ve gelenek sonucu yeni örnekleri pek karşımıza çıkmasa da bu edebi tür, kültürel bir miras ve tarih vesikası olarak önemini hala korumaktadır. Hem bağlı bulunduğu edebi geleneği pek çok yönüyle temsil etmesi, hem de dönem zihniyetinin kodlarını bünyesinde bulundurması yönüyle kaside, bu yönüyle ideal olanı yansıtma ve yaratma konularında geçmişten bugüne bir köprü ola gelmiştir. Biz de çalışmamızda bu hususu göz önünde bulunduracak, kasidenin formel eğitim süreçlerinde etkin biçimde kullanımının Talim ve Terbiye Kurulu Başkanlığı (TTKB) tarafından belirlenen Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı dersinin genel amaç ve kazanımlarını gerçekleştirmede ve son zamanlarda nispeten önemine vurgu yapılan değerler eğitimi kapsamında öğrencilere değer bilinci kazandırmadaki önemi üzerinde duracağız. Divan şiiri geleneğini temsil eden şair yoğunluğuyla orantılı olarak kaside formunda yazılan şiirlerin fazlalığı, aynı zamanda yüzyıllara yayılan değer algısındaki statik durum, değişim ve dönüşümler açısından da önemli bir gösterge olmaktadır. Bu çalışma bir tür olarak kasideden yapılandırmacı öğretim yaklaşımına dayalı eğitim süreçlerinde etkili biçimde yararlanmayı öngörmekle birlikte Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı öğretim programı genel amaçları, kazanımları ve değerler eğitimi bağlamında farkındalık oluşturmayı hedeflemektedir. ABSTRACT Divan Literature is a period in which the influence and validity of Turkish literature has continued for many centuries. During his centuries of domination, many poets and writers trained and brought important and valuable literary products to the body. With the poet and his work, which will find thousands, the qasida form of this literary tradition is dominant. The Qasida is the representative of the legacy in many different instances. It has been a very important species in the period of the qasida. Even though new examples of literary appreciation and tradition are not written yet, qasida still preserves its importance as a cultural heritage and historical document. It is important to represent both the literary tradition and the period mentality. This is a bridge from past to present in terms of reflecting and creating the ideal. In our work, we will emphasize the importance of using Turkish language and literature lesson effectively in education by realizing the achievements and achievements of the Turkish Language and Literature lesson determined by the Talim Terbiye Kurulu Başkanlığı (TTKB). We will also emphasize the importance of providing value-consciousness to students in the context of value-added education, which has been recently emphasized. This study intends to make an effective use of the educational process based on constructivist teaching approach. The aim of the Turkish Language and Literature curriculum is to raise awareness in terms of general aims, achievements and values education.
