Abstract:
MaleLusitaniantoadfish,Halobatrachusdidactylus,areterritorialandhaveawide
acousticrepertoire.Thesoundproductionapparatusconsistsofapairofintrinsiclarge
sonicmusclesonthetwolobesoftheswimbladder.Sonicmuscleactivityandthevariability
ofthevocalizationswererelatedusingelectromyograms(EMGs).EMGelectrodeswere
surgicallyimplantedonthesonicmusclesofseveralterritorialmales.Afterrecovery,the
subjectswerereleasedintoanexperimentaltankwithanavailablenest.Sonicmuscle
activitywasregisteredandthevocalizationsweresimultaneouslyrecordedusinga
hydrophone.Socialcontextwasmanipulatedbyreleasingdifferentkindsofintruders
(male(s)orfemale(s)).Thisactionelicitedtheproductionofboatwhistles,whilegruntswere
generatedduringfishdisturbance.Preliminaryanalysisshowsthat,unlikepreviously
reported,thebilateralsonicmusclescontractsimultaneouslyduringthegenerationofboth
signals.Themusclecontractionperiodishalvedduringtheproductionofthegruntrelative
totheboatwhistle.TheEMGperiodmatchesthesoundpulseperiodanddeterminesthe
fundamentalsoundfrequency.
