In the frame of the EUROMIR-95 mission, a gas-sensor detection unit was developed which applies mulit-array sensors and neural-network technology for the assessment of gaseous atmospheres. The aim of the socalled "Smart Gas Sensor" experiment onboard MIR was to perform an as complete as possible mapping of the breathable atmosphere anboard a working space station and to collect as many

The sensor unit was working over long periods nearly fully automatically, during the EUROMIR-95 and also during the DARA MIR-97 missions. During the measurement periods, several safety related events occurred, which were detected by the gas sensor detection unit The evaluation of the data confirmed that this type of detection unit can be used for continuous monitoring purposes in operational environments and is highly capable to provide important safety related information to the crew.
