Abstract and Figures

Around 75 % of warehouses retrieve products manually. In these warehouses forklifts are the most expensive machines. The study pays special attention to the travelling of these machines. In order to determine potential travel distance savings, a simulation model is created. The experiments demonstrate that the travel distance of forklifts can be reduced by 27-37 % when RF-based process is implemented comparing with travel distance when paper is used in the process. Research provided herein also defines how to optimize travelling by implementing multiple-tasks approach in WMS. The presented results show that the travel distance of forklifts can be also reduced by 9 % when multiple-tasks approach is used. In addition, it is identified, how stock accuracy affects the travel distance of forklifts. The correlation between the travel distance of forklifts and stock accuracy is presented herein.

This study proposes a simulation model for allocating counterbalanced forklifts in a logistics distribution center (LDC) with aisle constraints. Modeling the case study for a consumer goods firm, the performance measures of the logistics operation were calculated and certain experimental scenarios were purposed for decision-making regarding the number of forklifts and their productivity. The relevance of this research is validated by the gap in existing literature on enhancing forklift assignments in massive storage systems with restrictions. The simulation scenarios contribute toward standardizing logistics operations with similar characteristics, starting from the layout stage of an LDC. The designed simulation model demonstrates that the simulated allocation incorporates technical and human resources in warehouse operations. Utilizing discrete-event simulation (DES) as a framework, this study assesses various scenarios in an LDC with restrictions on the forklift. The hypothesis of the problem was analyzed, and the simulation model was used to characterize the system behavior under different scenarios and guide the decision-making processes impacting operational costs and client service levels. This research employs DES to address performance indicators and operational costs, serving as a methodological guide for resource allocation in logistics operations at distribution centers.

Cotton warehouses face unique inventory management challenges. This research addresses this challenge by proposing innovative strategies to enhance warehouse efficiency. Three key objectives are addressed: modeling cotton bale movements, evaluating an alternative to the current bale handling process, and evaluating an alternative to the current cotton bale marketing system. Results reveal significant cost savings. Changing bale receiving and placement strategy by using gin codes yields a 499,000percyclereductionforanOklahomacottonwarehousecase.Alteringorderfulfillmenttechniques,suchasgrouping30orders,saves499,000 per-cycle reduction for an Oklahoma cotton warehouse case. Altering order fulfillment techniques, such as grouping 30 orders, saves 34,000 per cycle. Implementing quality-based bale substitution leads to a $1.3 million saving per cycle.

In-house logistics activities are an essential part of any organisation as they improve operations productivity and efficiency. In this context, agile decision-making raises the need for planning the overall shop-floor operations and effectively control them. This work tackles this need and proposes a simulation-based decision support tool for in-house logistics that analyses the activities that can occur in both a distribution facility and a production facility towards logistics 4.0. This is done by developing two simulation models using Simio – simulation modelling framework based on intelligent objects. The resulted models are verified and validated based on two real-world operations. As a conclusion, the developed models are representative of the reality and can be applied in different in-house logistics settings, functioning as digital-twinning tools to operations improvement without real sets disruption.

This research aims to study the cost reduction of tire replacement in a case of forklifts by using VA/VE technique. A comparison of replacement cost between use of retreading tires and new OEM tires under the same conditions at 1,000 working hours was studied. The results shown that the replacement cost by using retreading tires are 288,560 THB which is lower than using the new OEM tire about 53.25%.

Effective warehouse management is becoming important for new supply chain management performance evaluation as it directly effects to organization business performance and customer satisfaction level. The objective of this study is to examine the direct relationship of effective warehouse space utilization, specific product handling methods, different product feature handling methods, effective warehouse management system, effective inventory management system, effective inventory picking system, warehouse management for cost reduction, regular problems of inventory management, effective IT system and benefits of specific soft ware for warehouse management have direct influence on effective warehouse management and competitive advantage. The survey was conducted on 53 entrepreneurs who are doing the warehousing business by using the questionnaires. After the data were analyzed then the observations of workers have been done to confirm the results finding. The results confirm that effective warehouse space utilization, specific product handling methods, different product feature handling methods, effective warehouse management system, effective inventory management system, effective inventory picking system, warehouse management for cost reduction, regular problems of inventory management, effective IT system and benefits of specific soft ware for warehouse management have influence on effective warehouse management and competitive advantage.

This paper discusses the distribution flow of aluminum (Al) alloy pipes, starting with the completion of the manufacturing process and final inspection. The proposed solution considers the use of bar-coded caps produced from recycled polymer materials that are placed on the ends of the tubes in order to achieve protection against potential changes in material properties and preserve the product quality. For the preparation of capped tube bundles for shipment from the manufacturer output storage to the customer input warehouse, a technical solution that enables correct and efficient Al alloy pipe handling is proposed, in terms of safety, security, reliability, financial feasibility and ecological viability, with optimal utilization of transport and storage.

This study analyzes the technical and economic aspects of selecting different types of material handling equipment within a warehouse and evaluates their impacts on the system’s performance. Specifically, the attention is focused on two main types of equipment used for material handling, namely the traditional forklift and the trilateral forklift. This study starts with a preliminary market analysis, then it simulates the implementation of the equipment types within a warehouse model with a pallet rack layout. The comparative analysis of the two material handling solutions is presented and illustrated so as to investigate the existence of a more efficient solution and on the optimization margins in terms of warehouse performance. Finally, the study suggests possible further investigations to be carried out in future research activities.

This study addresses order-picking routing optimization in a wide aisle of a mechanized warehouse. Efficiencies of the three popular heuristic policies (return, traversal, and Z-pick) are compared for different pick densities. A modified Z-pick policy with a flexible string length is proposed to increase its efficiency and accommodate lift-truck movement. The simulation-based results show that all three policies are not significantly different in the pick density region of 10–15 percent. The traversal policy performs better at pick densities below the region of indifference, while the return policy outperforms the others at higher pick densities. However, the Z-pick provides a viable universal alternative across all tested pick densities.

This work is concerned with the design, analysis and programming of a scaled down version of an electric forklift robot. An advantageous consequence of this device is the development of space saving storage units that allow for efficient packing of lighter goods into areas that while not built for human movement, allow ample space for movement of our forkliftt bot. This is especially important in cases where each cubic meter of the storage unit is valuable, for example, refrigerated goods storage units. Each part of the robot was either carefully selected or designed from scratch in the pursuit of maximizing the load bearing capacity to design-weight ratio. As such, structural analysis was conducted for each part using the Ansys Workbench simulation package. Furthermore, motors that were operated using standard electronic circuits were installed to remotely control the traversal of the bot, while cameras and sensors were employed to monitor its surroundings and movements. The next step was to program the logic circuit and link the various components wired to it. Here the main control device used was an Arduino, which is an integrated open-source electronic platform that allows for precision control of the various electronic components in accordance with the operator’s inputs. The hardware used for passing instructions to the Arduino was a common smart phone on which a self-developed android app was installed. Writing a program for this involves careful calibration of the power and position of the driving components and the electric signals they receive.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assist facility design practitioners, industrial managers, and expert systems (ES) developers identify important issues to consider and actions to follow in the selection of material handling (MH) equipment, overcome limitations of existing equipment selection approaches, and design complete MH systems. Design/methodology/approach A framework that specifies the steps that have to be taken in the selection of MH equipment is suggested. It identifies categories of equipment based on all handling‐related functions performed in a facility, which allows consideration of various categories of equipment, and selects equipment classes and types from among candidates based on user requirements and objectives. Findings The suggested framework is capable of producing a wide range of equipment that performs various functions in a facility, and satisfies requirements and objectives without the need for using large data bases. Applying it requires cooperation of facility managers and designers. Research limitations/implications Some of the steps of the suggested framework require further investigation and research. Practical implications Facility design practitioners, industrial managers, and developers of ES can make better selection among a large number of MH equipment and design complete systems by relying on functions performed in a facility, requirements, and objectives. Originality/value A framework for selection of MH equipment is lacking in the literature. This paper fills a gap by presenting design issues and organized steps that practitioners, managers, and expert system developers working on selection of MH equipment have to address and follow in order to design complete MH systems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the applicability of different drivers for assigning activity costs to products in warehouse logistics environment. Design/methodology/approach An action research case study in the warehouse logistics of an electronics wholesaler. Data were collected from a single activity which was analysed in depth. Findings The study illustrates that there may be significant variation in activity costs that cannot be traced with any single transaction‐based driver. Automatic data collection methods can be used to support cost accounting in such a situation. It was clearly demonstrated that in certain environments it is possible to significantly increase the accuracy and versatility of accounting by measuring the actual durations together with other variables. Research limitations/implications The results are derived from a single company and activity. Practical implications Gives accountants in environments where data is rich and plentiful examples of methods for analysing the data for obtaining a deeper understanding of the cost behaviour of activities and products. Originality/value Complements the discussion on activity cost drivers and logistics costing.

Purpose –In spite of having a number of general-purpose algorithms for solving plant layout problems, facility planners may still face a challenging task to adjust these algorithms to handle special, but not uncommon, layout problems. The purpose of this study is to propose a new method for addressing the impact of overhead space utilization on a plant layout solution. Design/methodology/approach –A new method for adjusting material flow under a mixed floor and overhead material handling condition is incorporated in an existing plant layout procedure. A case study involving the layout improvement in a lawn mower engine assembly facility is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Findings –The analysis of solutions for the case study shows that the layout generated by the proposed modified material flow approach is a more economical solution. The case also shows, when it is important to optimize the use of space, the overhead space should be considered as part of any methodology for designing a good layout. Research limitations/implications –The proposed modified material flow approach can be applied to any facility where the use of overhead space for material handling is justifiable by limited floor space and/or by high cost of land. The proposed method can be applied to small to medium size problems with minimal computational effort. However, as the size of facility grows, the manual calculation becomes more time consuming and potentially erratic. Originality/value – This paper should be useful to both researchers and practitioners who deal with overhead space utilization in designing facility layouts.

Order picking, the assembly of a customer's order from items in storage, is an essential link in the supply chain and is the major cost component of warehousing. The critical issue is to simultaneously reduce the cost and increase the speed of the order picking activity. This study departs from the limited prior research that focused on either routing of workers or storage of warehoused items. The main objectives are to (1) evaluate various routing heuristics versus an optimal routine in a volume-based storage environment, (2) propose several methods of implementing volume-based storage, and (3) examine the interaction of the routing and storage policies under different operating conditions of pick list size and demand skewness. The experimental results show statistically significant differences in the mean route distance for the routing policies, storage policies, and their interactions. Further testing indicates that the choice of certain routing and storage policies in combination can result in increased picking efficiency.

A key task in the material handling system design process is the selection and configuration of equipment for material transport and storage in a facility. Material handling equipment selection is a complex, tedious task. However, there are few tools other than checklists to assist engineers in the selection of appropriate, cost-effective material handling equipment. This paper describes the development of an intelligent material handling equipment selection system called MHESA (Material Handling Equipment Selection Advisor). The MHESA is composed of three modules: a database to store equipment types with their specifications; a knowledge-based expert system for assisting material handling equipment selection; and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) model to choose the most favorable equipment type. The concept proposed in this paper can automate the design of material handling equipment selection system, and provides artificial intelligence in the decision-making process.

This thesis has studied stochastic models and analysis of warehouse operations. After an overview of stochastic research in warehouse operations, we explore the following topics. Firstly, we search optimal batch sizes in a parallel-aisle warehouse with online order arrivals. We employ a sample path optimization and perturbation analysis algorithm to search the optimal batch size for a warehousing service provider, and a central finite difference algorithm to search the optimal batch sizes from the perspectives of customers and total systems. Secondly, we research a polling-based dynamic order picking system for online retailers. We build models to describe and analyze such systems via stochastic polling theory, find closed-form expressions for the order line waiting times, and apply polling-based picking to online retailers. We then present closed-form analytic expressions for pick rates of order picking bucket brigades systems in different storage profiles, and show how to combine storage policies and bucket brigades protocols to improve order picking productivity. Finally, we propose a new warehouse design approach oriented to improving revenue management of public storage warehouses. Our experiments show a proper facility design can significantly improve the expected revenue of public storage warehouses.

Purpose Aims to discover the different technologies used in warehouse stock control. Design/methodology/approach The paper begins with a review of optical and radio‐frequency product‐labelling technologies, and then examines various devices and systems for reading these labels and integrating stock control into back‐office databases. It then looks at techniques for finding the goods within the warehouse, from simple address labels to radar positioning and inertial navigation, considering both operator‐based and guided vehicle handling systems. Findings Labelling technologies facilitate automatic product identification. Rugged handheld computers with wireless communications give real‐time capability and integrate stock control into wider software systems for efficient resource management. Speech synthesis provides one man‐machine interface enabling workers to order‐pick under database control. Automated readers record products entering and leaving the warehouse, theoretically removing the need for stock taking. Automatic guided vehicles are now available to stack and retrieve goods in the warehouse. Originality/value Provides engineers with an overview of the diversity of solutions employed in warehouse stock handling.

Purpose This paper aims to discuss some relevant issues in the design and operation of material handling and storage systems (MH&SS) characterized by complex material flows and high‐traffic intensity. The paper seeks to provide solution examples and an analysis methodology to face large increases of materials flows through a redesign of the material handling and storage system. Design/methodology/approach At first, possible strategies to improve system performances when facing strong increments of material flows are presented and discussed. A significant case study is then analyzed in order to present a practical application of the proposed methodology. Resorting to discrete‐events simulation, the alternatives are verified, correct design choices are identified, and the resources are properly sized to develop a streamlined layout. Findings The paper recognises that design and upgrade of intensive material handling systems is a complex task asking for a careful study of alternatives and detailed system analysis, otherwise capacity problems and bottleneck phenomena may not be effectively solved. Research limitations/implications This work focuses on a specific case study. The paper, therefore, will be of interest mainly to managers and designers of similar plants and large – intensive material handling systems. Practical implications The paper shows how the correct planning and analysis of design alternatives integrated with a detailed system simulation enable a drastic reduction of bottleneck phenomena, thus meeting the required capacity improvement goals when upgrading and redesigning complex and high‐volume material handling systems. Originality/value The paper, while providing insights to practitioners engaged in design and management of complex MH&SS, outlines a methodological approach which can be useful when facing major capacity improvement projects.

Construction is possibly one of the most cost orientated industries in any economy. The primary mode of supplier selection has always tended to be on the basis of lowest material or service cost at point of consumption. Indeed, this remains the case even in the post-Latham (1994) and Egan (1998) world in which we live. In general, construction cost estimates are based on a straight ‘take off’ of the quantities required. All further ‘other’ costs in the form of overhead, profit, labour and wastage are consolidated into the cost of the materials. Construction is unique within the various industries making up a modern economy in that the bulk of the materials and components that it uses are of relatively low value while being of high volume. Consequently, a significant proportion of the ‘other’ costs associated with materials purchases must be in the form of transportation from the point of extraction and / or production to the point of consumption. This paper provides an overview of the hidden costs associated with the transportation of construction materials within the industry and proposes improved methods of managing the logistics of the construction process e.g. reverse logistics, in order to reduce costs and increase the basic sustainability of the construction process.

Information technology has become an essential part of the rapid and accurate transfer and processing of enormous volumes of data processed in international transport firms and port organisations. The proper management of systems, which process this information and communicate it to those who manage port operations, is vital for efficient transport. This explains why container-tracking systems are given high priority among operational computer applications in ports. Investigates the importance of information technology and its role in improving the operational systems in cargo handling. A computer simulation model is developed to compare two different operational systems – a container terminal equipped with electronic devices versus a terminal without such devices. The importance of information technology in supply-chain management is also discussed.
