Introduction
The fauna of Tipulidae of the central parts of the European Russia remains inadequately known.
Moscow region (=Moskovskaya oblast) has received most attention. Fedchenko (1868) recorded 42
species from the region, among which the record of Tipula (Vestiplex) excisa excisa Schummel was
most likely an error. The record of Tipula (Tipula) oleracea Linnaeus also needs confirmation since
no specimens of this species are known from the region. The species recorded by Fedchenko are
indicated below with a single asterisk (*). Savchenko (1961, 1964, 1975, 1983) added 19 species,
indicated below with two asterisks (**). His specimen records, reexamined by the current author, are
also included in the present check list. A preliminary check list has been published recently for
Ulyanovsk region (Paramonov 2006).
Additional data were obtained by the author, who collected craneflies in Moscow and Tver'
regions since 1990 and in Voronezh region in 2009 (Pilipenko 1997, 2002, 2008). The current list
was compiled based on the author's collection (abbreviated below as V.P.), collections of the
Department of Entomology and the Biological Museum of Moscow State University (MSU), as well
as literature data (Savchenko 1961, 1964, 1975, 1983; Oosterbroek & Theowald 1992; Paramonov
2006) and the online “Catalogue of the Craneflies of the World” (Oosterbroek 2009).
The nomenclature and the order of taxa largely follow the Catalogue of Palearctic Diptera
(Oosterbroek & Theowald 1992). The data on species distributions are modified from Oosterbroek
(2009). Oosterbroek and Theowald (1992) defined the Central European territory (CET) as part of
the USSR between 60° N latitude, 50° N latitude, and the watershed of the Urals. In this paper,
however, the term Central European territory of Russia (CET) refers only to the part of Russian
Federation (without Kaliningrad region) within the same northern, southern, and eastern limits.
Belarus and the Baltic republics of the former USSR are, therefore, excluded. Other territorial units
also follow the partition scheme of Oosterbroek and Theowald (1992) but refer only to the Russian

Federation: NET, North European territory; SET, South European territory (excluding Ukraine and
Moldavia); WS, West Siberia; ES, East Siberia; FE, Far East (incl. Kamchatka, Sakhalin, and
Kurils).
The list is completed with names of species erroneously recorded from CET in the past and those
recorded from localities in the Central European territory of the USSR sensu Oosterbroek and
Theowald (1992) which are outside the territory of the Russian Federation.

New data on the geographical distribution of 12 species of tipuloid dipterans from Agrakhanski and Kizlyarski territories of Daghestan Nature Reserve are presented – 9 species of limoniid fl ies in 6 genera (Erioptera, Symplecta, Idiocera, Helius, Pseudolimnophila, Pilaria) and 3 species of tipulid fl ies – one in the genus Nephrotoma and two in Tipula. (subgenera Tipula and Lunatipula). Pilaria scutellata (Staeger, 1840) - is new for the fauna of Russia, the Caucasus, the North Caucasus and Daghestan, Symplecta (Symplecta) grata Loew, 1873 and Tipula (Lunatipula) borysthenica Savchenko, 1954 - are new for the Caucasus, the North Caucasus and Daghestan, Erioptera (Erioptera) fuscipennis Meigen, 1818 - is new for the North Caucasus and Daghestan, Pseudolimnophila (Pseudolimnophila) lucorum (Meigen, 1818) and Idiocera (Idiocera) pulchripennis (Loew, 1856) – are new for Daghestan. New information on habitats and ecology of the species are presented. Keywords: Diptera, Limoniidae, Tipulidae, Erioptera, Symplecta, Idiocera, Helius, Pseudolimnophila, Pilaria, Nephrotoma, Tipula, the North Caucasus, Daghestan, new records.
... Both are rare Palaearctic species not earlier recorded from Karelia. In 1997-2007, the second author collected these species in Moscow Province (Pilipenko, 2009) but the observations on their bionomics remained unpublished. In the present communication, we give the new records of T. apicispina and T. stenostyla along with the data on their bionomics. ...
... Palaearctic: so far known only from Russia and Finland. In Russia, the species was found in the North and Central European parts and in West Siberia (Pilipenko, 2009) with the northernmost record from vill. Gobzhitsa in Leningrad Province (Savchenko, 1964). ...

The rare Palaearctic species Tipula apicispina Alexander, 1934 and T. stenostyla Savchenko, 1964 are recorded for the first time from Russian Karelia. The new data on their bionomics are given. The adults were collected with trunk eclector set on a recently fallen aspen trunk. The larvae develop under moss growing on fallen trunks, bases of old standing trees and stumps of hardwoods, as well as on the ground near tree bases.
... Though some revision work on the taxonomy of T. (Pterelachisus) had been done (Savchenko 1964;Alexander 1965;Theowald 1980;Salmela 2009;Pilipenko 2009), it was still difficult to define this subgenus. Due many similarities in both adults and larvae, the boundaries between T. (Pterelachisus) and T. (Vestiplex), T. (Lunatipula), and some other related subgenera of Tipula, are frequently confused, which make them loosely termed the "Vestiplex-Lunatipula" group of subgenera (Gelhaus 1986;2005). ...

The complete mitochondrial genomes of Tipula (Pterelachisus) cinereocincta mesacantha Alexander, 1934, T. (P.) legalis Alexander, 1933, T. (P.) varipennis Meigen, 1818, and T. (P.) yasumatsuana Alexander, 1954 are reported, three of them being sequenced for the first time. The mitochondrial genome lengths of the four species are 15,907 bp, 15,625 bp, 15,772 bp, and 15,735 bp, respectively. All genomes exhibit a high AT base composition, with A + T content of 76.7%, 75.0%, 77.8%, and 75.4%, respectively. The newly reported mitogenomes herein show a general similarity in overall structure, gene order, base composition, and nucleotide content to those of the previously studied species within the family Tipulidae. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted to investigate the relationships within Tipulidae, using both Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference approaches. The results show that the four target species of the subgenus T. (Pterelachisus) basically form a monophyletic group within Tipulidae, clustering with species of the Tipula subgenera T. (Lunatipula), T. (Vestiplex), and T. (Formotipula); however, the genus Tipula is not monophyletic. Moreover, neither the tipulid subfamily Tipulinae nor the family Limoniidae is supported to be a monophyletic group. The monophyly of the family Tipulidae, and the sister relationship between Tipulidae and Cylindrotomidae are reconfirmed. These research findings could contribute to deep insights into the systematic and evolutionary patterns of crane flies.

The genus Ctenophora is one of the most impressive and beautiful taxa of crane-flies, and a brilliant representative of the family and of the regional fauna. The genus Ctenophora contains 23 species and one subspecies world wide, with 21 species in the Palaearctic, two in Nearctic and 13 in Russia [Oosterbroek, 2019]. So far 3 species are known in the Caucasus for certain: Ctenophora (Ctenophora) guttata Meigen, 1818 - Rostov Region, Krasnodar Region, Azerbaijan [Savchenko, 1973], Karachaevo-Cherkesiya [Lukasheva, 1987], Georgia, Armenia* [Oosterbroek, 2019], Ctenophora (Cnemoncosis) ornata Meigen, 1818 – Krasnodar Region [Pilipenko, 2016; Pilipenko & Lantsov, 2017] and Ctenophora (Cnemoncosis) magnifica Loew, 1869 (Azerbaijan, North of Iran) [Savchenko, 1973]. One more species can be added to the list now - Ctenophora (Ctenophora) flaveolata (Fabricius, 1794), which was found recently in the North Caucasus (Adygeya) and which is new for the Caucasus and for Russia. * The presence of C. guttata in Georgia and Armenia needs confirmation.

A review is presented of the seven Western Palaearctic species of the genus Dolichopeza Curtis, 1825, which represent two subgenera: Dolichopeza (six species) and Oropeza Needham, 1908 (one species). A neotype is designated for the species D. (D.) nitida Mik, 1874, which is considered a senior synonym of D. graeca Mannheims, 1954, whereas D. nitida sensu authors is described here as D. bifida sp. n. Furthermore, D. (D.) hirsuticauda Savchenko, 1968 is considered a senior synonym of D. schahriari Theowald, 1978. The paper includes an illustrated key to the species, details on their distribution and a list of the material examined.
