The purpose of this research was to address the current and prospective views on educational technology (ET) in order to discover the difficulties and develop its utilization in Omani higher education. The main instruments used to carry out this research were two questionnaires: the faculty members’ questionnaire, and the technical/administrative staff questionnaire. One hundred and fifty-nine participants were involved in the study. They represented all educational technologists who have been with the public and private Omani higher education institutions. The findings show a tendency for future expansion with less expensive technologies and the need for training. Some impediments of ET use were also found. Important recommendations from this study include: the need to support Omani higher education institutions with technical and human resources to increase and activate the use/number of new instructional media and equipment.

Learning is the most indispensable activity in the current knowledge-based economy where firms, in order to compete and survive, must be constantly alert, capable of adapting to fast change, constantly learn, evolve, and transform themselves rapidly. In that respect, the use of innovative information and communication technology is perceived to play a key role in the development of new learning platforms and mechanisms. One of the emerging solutions is electronic training "eTraining", which is a growing trend and is expected to become crucial in meeting newly introduced challenges and in catering for changing and diversified market needs. The global connectivity of the Internet and the availability of innovative information and communication technology are factors that have contributed in catalyzing the new Internet-based learning paradigm offering great opportunities for organizations to educate and train their management and staff. However, Internet-based training poses several considerable challenges for various organizations especially those operating in developing countries. Within the context of transferring and using information and communication technology into developing countries, this paper demonstrates the outcome of a research aiming at investigating the effectiveness and applicability of Internet-based training in providing training for organizations in Egypt. The focus of the research was mainly soliciting the opinions of three different groups of stake holders; human resources or training managers responsible for setting training policies; instructors responsible for facilitating courses and preparing material; and trainees undertaking the training.

This edited book is published by Idea Group Publishing. The book has sixteen chapters, in addition to an author biography and an index. Besides the editor, total of 24 authors have contributed to the book. These authors are from different countries, academic backgrounds, and institutions. Although a big majority of the authors are from USA, there are several authors from Canada and Egypt. The authors represent a variety of universities, private companies, and military institutions. Most of them have strong professional backgrounds, which help them address the issues both from theoretical and practical perspectives.

Teaching is a communication process in which a body of knowledge is delivered from an instructor to students (Gagne, 1985). This communication traditionally takes place in a classroom. With the proliferation of computer software and hardware at low costs and the ease of access to the World Wide Web, one should expect that the use of Internet and related information technologies will foster an alternative teaching environment. Previous works have reported on various Internet-based teaching aids such as using e-mail, posting information on a Web page and using the Internet to search for additional class materials. Integrating these teaching media in a larger framework of Distance Learning and Virtual Class (Hiltz, 1994), they would provide a synergistic effect in helping students acquire the desired body of knowledge efficiently. From this perspective, we discuss a framework for summative and formative evaluations of Internet-based teaching in higher education. The timely evaluation is necessary for the development and implementation of a new teaching/learning environment. It will assure that the technology meets the intended pedagogic goal of teaching by taking into account feedback from student-users.

This article describes the design and delivery of a graduate-level course in management at two universities via advanced information technology, which was used to enable collaborative learning, teaching with transcontinental student teams and multiple instructors, and integration of external expertise. This partnership enriched student learning and expedited faculty and institutional development. We predict that such transformations will increase as schools of management and institutions of higher learning in general seek to add educational value at low cost.
