Abstract

REPORTS OF Gempylus serpens Cuvier, 1829, Lepidocybium flavobrunneum (SMITH, 1849) AND Ruvettus pretiosus COCCO, 1829 (ACTINOPTERYGII:GEMPYLIDAE) IN INSHORE WATERS OF BAHIA STATE, BRAZIL. The presence of the gempylids Gempylus serpens Cuvier, 1829, Lepidocybium flavobrunneum (Smith, 1849) and Ruvettus pretiosus Cocco, 1829 has been reported for the first time in inshore waters of Bahia State, northeastern of Brazil, on the geographic positions 1º30’00’’S - 36º00’00’’W and 16º30’27”S - 37º30”08”W. Several aspects of morphological variation not yet known for G. serpens and the first record of parasitism by the copepod Pennella sp. on L. flavobrunneum are presented.

... However, there is a marked variation with the meristic reported in specimens from the Indo-Pacific (Table 1), which had already been reported by Nakamura & Parin (1993), between the number of dorsal spines and vertebrae between the populations of the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific. Another difference, already pointed out by Lopes et al. (2003), is the shape of the pectoral fin. It is therefore necessary to carry out taxonomic studies among them that allow them to be recognized as possible different species. ...
... In general, records for G. serpens occur with the capture of a single specimen, even when nets are used as fishing gear (Lopes et al., 2003;Myoung et al., 2013;Osmany et al., 2019). For this reason, it can be considered a solitary species. ...
... It is necessary to study if there is a possible aggregation behavior for reproductive purposes. Its presence in longline and artisanal fisheries is sporadic (Nakamura & Parin, 2002;Lopes et al., 2003); in some areas it has little exploitation and commercial importance (Cervigón et al., 1992;Nakamura & Parin, 1993), and can be considered as a potential fishing resource (Lopes et al., 2003). In Mexico, some mesopelagic resources have already begun to be exploited, such as some species of the Gempylidae and Bramidae families, for example the Escolar Lepidocybium flavobrunneum (Smith, 1843) and the Pomfret Taractes rubescens (Jordan & Evermann, 1887) (Del Moral-Flores et al., 2021), which is why it is important to continue with the studies and monitoring of these fish groups. ...

The presence of three adult specimens of the Snake mackerel, Gempylus serpens Cuvier, 1829 (with 564-743 mm of standard length), on the southern coast of Veracruz, Mexico, has been recorded. Their morphological and meristic characteristics are presented here, and these characteristics concur with the ones found in the western Atlantic. The presence, as well as the wide distribution and aggregation of the species in the southern Gulf of Mexico are confirmed
... The family Gempylidae, comprising 16 genera and 24 species, is associated with mesopelagic and benthopelagic environments. Gempylids are primarily distributed in tropical, subtropical, and temperate areas worldwide, with little being known about them, both in Colombia and around the world (Nakamura & Parin, 2002;Lopes et al. 2003). Species included in this family are characterized by short snouts, presenting two nostrils on each side of the head, large and non-protractible mouth, sometimes possessing two strong fang teeth in the upper jaw or a pair in the front of the lower jaw. ...
... Worldwide, R. pretiosus has been recorded in the northern Adriatic Sea (Gulf of Trieste) (Bettoso & Dulčić, 1999;Dulčić et al. 2014), North Eastern Mediterranean Sea (Izmir and Iskenderun Bay) -Turkey (Bilecenoglu et al. 2002;Gurlek et al. 2013) and in the southwestern Indian Ocean (Fricke et al. 2007;). In the western Atlantic it has been reported in Belize (Claro, 1994), Venezuela (Cervigón, 1994); Brazil (Carvalho-Fihlo, 1999;Lopes et al. 2003 ...
... (Eschmeyer, 2015). Diagnosis: Identification of the specimen followed the characters described by Nakamura & Parin (1993;2002), Lopes et al. (2003) and Eschmeyer (2015). ...

The first record of Ruvettus pretiosus Cocco, 1833 for the Colombian continental Caribbean is presented. The specimen was collected at Los Cocos, department of Magdalena (11°16’33, 84’’ N 73°53’33, 01’’ W), using a demersal longline gear placed at 100 m depth. Biometrics, diagnosis and comments regarding its distribution, ecology and biology are included in the description. This new record expands the distribution of the species in the Caribbean Sea and increases the reported number of gempylids for Colombia to five.

Analysis of Cookiecutter shark Isistius spp. (Squaliformes; Dalatiidae) bites in cetaceans (Mammalia; Cetacea) on the Bahia coast, northeastern Brazil. Few studies have registered signs of mutilation on cetaceans in Brazil, especially from shark attacks. This work describes interactions between cookiecutter sharks Isistius spp. and cetaceans through the analysis of bite records for cetacean carcasses washed ashore on the Bahia coast between 1996 and 2005. Twenty bite records were analyzed in 13 cetacean species, of which the Delphinidae family was the most frequent. After the analysis, Isistius plutodus was identified as the aggressor species on 80%

After the analysis, Isistius plutodus was identified as the aggressor species on 80% of the records, followed by I. brasiliensis (20%), based on the characteristic shape of the mutilations. The areas most subject to attack in cetaceans were: flanks 40%; head and abdomen 20% each; dorsal 15%; and genital with 5%. The relatively high number of bites on the flanks was probably due to its larger area, which offered greater opportunities to the cookiecutter shark. At least three bite records were related to the possible causes of strandings in delphinids. We recommend further studies on interactions between sharks and cetaceans along the Brazilian coast.

The community structure and dynamics as well as some biological parameters of selected species of the ichthyofauna of the Mataripe estuarine region affected by the Landulfo Alves Oil Refinery (RLAM) were analyzed. Twenty stations were sampled with a gillnet in five different periods: August and December 2003, March and July/August 2004 and January 2005. Thirty-five actinopterygian species and one elasmobranch species were recorded, Oligoplites saurus, Diapterus rhombeus, Lutjanus synagris and Scomberomorus brasiliensis among them, on all the campaigns. A total of 1368 specimens, weighing 36.10 kg, were caught. The ichthyofauna total biomass was greater, in weight, on the eastern side of the study region, especially at the stations close to the shoals/reefs and the rocky bottom. A similar pattern was also observed for the diversity values. In general, low evenness and diversity were observed in the area studied, possibly as a result of the fishing gear used. D. rhombeus juveniles dominated in all but one of the samplings (July 2004), in which latter Cyclichthys spinosus was dominant. Carangids and species associated with consolidated bottoms were observed, although in small numbers, throughout the study period. In spite of the limitations imposed by the gear used for sampling, the estuarine area influenced by the RLAM was seen to play a role as a growth area for the great majority of species, especially the mojarra (D. rhombeus), but it offers no fishing potential due to the prevalence of young and small individuals. Evidence of imminent spawning was recorded for Pomadasys corvinaeformis in August 2003, and recent spawning in March 2004 for Oligoplites saurus. Further, mature individuals occurred in insufficient numbers to permit population level evaluation.

"Wildlife and fisheries management are based upon economics: the law of supply and demand controls the direction of commercial fisheries. In the U.S. pelagic longline fishery, one example of a bycatch species that has received little research attention because of its lower economic value is the escolar (Lepidocybium flavobrunneum). Given its importance as a secondary market species, the main objectives of this paper are to provide information on fishing characteristics, relative abundance, distribution, and size composition of escolar catch in the U.S. pelagic longline fishery operating in the western North Atlantic. The overarching goal is to emphasize the importance of evaluating, managing, and conserving lower-valued species. Findings show that escolar nominal catches significantly vary by geographical area, month, and year. Most escolar are caught in the Gulf of Mexico and off the Florida East Coast (FEC), but mean catch rates are greatest in the FEC and Sargasso Sea. Escolar catch rates are greatest in April, November, and December. Overall, escolar catch rates are stable, which suggests that overfishing is not occurring in this part of the Atlantic."
