INTRODUCTION
The fauna of ptyctimous mites of the Palaearctic as well as other zoogeographic
regions is far from being fully recognised and definition of exact zoogeographic
elements is too early. There are still too few findings and new sites of occurrence
of individual species appear in different unexpected localities. That is why the
present conclusions on species distribution and the origin of the fauna differ,
sometimes even radically, from those drawn earlier, even over a period of a few
years.
Each subsequent faunistic or ecological paper extends the range of the
occurrence of species. For instance, according to Rajski (1968) the species
Phthiracarus ferrugineus (C. L. Koch) was temperate Western-Holarctic, in 1988
I classified it as European-Siberian, while at present it is a Paneuropean species.
Another example – Phthiracarus lentulus (C. L. Koch) classified by Rajski (1968)
as South European, Phthiracarus longulus (C. L. Koch) – as North European and
Acrotritia duplicata (Grandjean) – as Western-European species, today are
assigned to Panpalaearctic species.
Another and more serious reason for difficulties in establishment of
zoogeographical elements is the disregard of the role of passive dispersion (at least
when considering the group of ptyctimous mites). A large number of species
among ptyctimous mites are parthenogenetic and for them it is easier to colonise
new areas. The conclusions drawn on the basis of zoogeographical distribution
about the history or origin of fauna can become undermined after accidental
colonisation as a result of inert transportation. An illustrative example is
Phthiracarus anonymus Grandjean a species rather rare in the Palaearctic,
found at 3600 m a.s.l. on the Machu Picchu, 2000 m a.s.l. on the Cibodas Volcano
on Java Island or on the Galapagos Islands. It is unreasonable to suppose that
it is a relict of Pangaea, present before the continental drift. It should rather be
assumed that the present distribution of this species is a result of passive
dispersion.
Zoogeographic literature has brought forth many propositions for a regional
division of the Palaearctic; so far none of them have been accepted as standard or
universal. Zoogeographical terms are often defined in different ways, usually
depending on the special subject. In view of the above, I have not attempted to
define a zoogeographical division that would be suitable for this work.
In the first part of the monograph (Niedbała 2011) by mistake I have left
out diagnoses of the two species found in the Palm House, Poznań (Poland).
These spe cies are A. clavata (Märkel) and A.(H.) singularis (Sellnick) of tropical
distribution and one species from Madeira – S.(S.) crassisetosus (Willmann).
In this part a description of the newly discovered species Protoplophora iranica
Akrami et Behmanesh, 2012 has been added.

MATERIAL AND METHODS
The names of localities are followed by the number of specimens found at
a given locality (in parentheses). Names of localities taken from literature are
accompanied by the source of information. In the case of new localities, the precise
data on the collecting place have been provided.
The labels of the samples indicated: RS from the Prof. Schuster, Graz collection
were impossible to find, they are denoted only by the number of the sample.
In biogeographic conclusions the term “endemic” denotes species occurring at
a single site or at most at a few sites in the same subregion (however, in view of
such poor recognition of the fauna, a species occurring at a single site is, in fact,
not always endemic). The references are restricted to papers concerning species
whose presence has been documented with a description or figure, so I disregard
the ecological and zoogeographic results in which the species have only been
quoted. The species from a few catalogues and checklists, e.g. Balogh and
Mahunka (1980, 1983), Bernini et al. (1987, 1995), Chen et al. (2010), Daniel
and Černý (1971), Karppinen et al. (1987), Mahunka and Mahunka-Papp (2004),
Niemi (1988), Niemi et al. (1997), Pérez-Íñigo (1988), Schatz (1983), Weigmann
(2006) have been treated highly subjectively. I have cited only the species whose
occurrence has been supported by diagnosis or drawing. I do not refer to the
catalogues in which the species are only mentioned.
The detailed data on localities, supplemented with the list of species and
number of specimens found at each locality, are provided in the chapter “List of
localities with the found species of ptyctimous mites”.
