Supplement to the knowledge of ptyctimous mites of Oriental Region (Acari Oribatida)

Abstract

A supplement to the monograph on ptyctimous mites of Oriental Region (NIEDBA£A 2000), presents diagnoses of the species described in the papers published after 1998 and a few species described in the papers published before this year. Analysis of a few dozen samples with ptyctimous mites from different areas of Oriental Region has enriched the number of species from the region by 7 species new to science. These new species are: Mesoplophora (Mesoplophora) frogneri n. sp., Apoplophora kapiti n. sp., Apoplophora sarawaki n. sp., Apoplophora serrata n. sp., Apoplophora triquetra n. sp., Austrotritia singaporensis n. sp., and Phthiracarus pondoklowii n. sp. The species Euphthiracarus meghalayensis SANYAL, 1988 has been declared conspecific with Euphthiracarus pakistanensis HAMMER, 1977 and Pthiracarus (Archiphthiracarus) hirsutus FUJIKAWA, 2003 with Phthiracarus setosus (BANKS, 1895). From among the 39 already known species, 12 were known only from the original description and these have been subjected to detailed morphological analysis revealing or allowing more accurate specification of some morphological features, included in the redescriptions presented in this paper. New localities have been specified for the following species: O. chichijimensis, E. meghalayensis, P. globosus, and A.(A.) clavatus, extending their hitherto geographical ranges. In total the supplement presents 45 species, including 8 Mesoplophoridae, 16 Euphthiracaroidea, and 21 Phthiracaroidea.

Two new species of oribatid mites, Temburongia similanensis sp. nov. (Synichotritiidae) and Austrophthiracarus trapezoids sp. nov. (Phthiracaridae), are described based on adult specimens from leaf litter on Similan Islands. Thailand. Temburongia similanensis sp. nov. differs from T. patoi Mahunka, 1990 in having simple prodorsal and notogastral setae, one pair of median prodorsal cristae, two pairs of exobothridial setae, two longitudinal rows of ano-adanal setae, coxal setation of 3-1-2-3, tridactylous legs, and, more unusually, clusters of bothridial brachytrachea which are unknown in other synichotritiid mites. Austrophthiracarus trapezoides sp. nov. can be distinguished from the similar species A. pseudotuberculatus Mahunka, 2008 by the presence of a large trapezoid prodorsal tubercle and longer notogastral setae (seta c 1 reaching d 1). A checklist of Thai Euptyctima, including 19 species in four families (Oribotritiidae, Euphthiracaridae, Synichotritiidae, and Phthiracaridae), their synonyms and distributional data are presented. Plonaphacarus semiaciculatus (Mahunka, 2008) comb. nov. is proposed as a new combination for Rhacaplacarus semiaciculatus Mahunka, 2008.

The oribatid mite genus Austrotritia Sellnick, 1959 (Oribotritiidae) is reviewed. Two new species, Austrotritia didyma sp. nov. and Austrotritia fissurata sp. nov., and one newly recorded species from China, Austrotritia saraburiensis Aoki, 1965, are identified. A checklist of all known species and key to the Chinese species of Austrotritia are provided.

The oribatid mite genus Apoplophora Aoki, 1980 (Mesoplophoridae) is reviewed, and a checklist and key to all known species are provided. Three species of Apoplophora including a new species, Apoplophora dentata sp. nov. from Tibet, and a newly recorded species from China, Apoplophora heterotricha Mahunka, 1987, are identified, and their morphological descriptions and illustrations are also given.

The species checklist is the basic data that reflects the species diversity in a country or region. In order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the taxonomic study of oribatid mites in China and the 60th anniversary of the Special Committee of Acarology of the Entomological Society of China, and to explore the China's biodiversity, and scientifically answer “how many species and what species are there in China”, we compiled a checklist of Chinese oribatid mites, including a total of 1000 species and 35 subspecies in 311 genera and 158 subgenera representing 112 families. In addition, we provided a brief history of taxonomic research on oribatid mites in China in the past 100 years, Chinese name, literature citations and provincial distribution information of each species and subspecies, and a list of species nomina nuda. This work will support China's actions to implement the “Convention on Biological Diversity”, and promote biodiversity research and protection.

Broadleaf forests are rare in Norway and they are considered one the most biodiverse terrestrial habitats in Fennoscandia. These forests are poorly studied in terms of their acarofauna. Mites of two groups, Oribatida and Mesostigmata, were studied in a broadleaf forest in Western Norway. In total, 6,350 oribatid mites, representing 67 species (i.e. 25% of the known Norwegian species) and 560 mesostigmatid mites representing 22 species (9% of the species recorded from Norway) were collected. The average density of Oribatida and Mesostigmata was 456 and 40 individuals per 500 cm3, respectively. The most abundant member of the Oribatida was Oribatula exilis (which represented 29% of the Oribatida collected) while Zercon lindrothi made up 59% ofthe Mesostigmata. Fifteen of the oribatid species are first records for Norway, including six new to Fennoscandia: Phthiracarus compressus, Suctobelbella arcana, S. hammerae, S. prominens, Campachipteria patavina, Lagenobates lagenulus and Liebstadia longior.

The oribatid mite genus Mesotritia Forsslund, 1963 (Oribotritiidae) is reviewed. Five species of Mesotritia including two new species, Mesotritia bicarinata sp. nov. and Mesotritia serrata sp. nov., and three newly recorded species from China, M. maerkeli Sheals, 1965, M. nuda (Berlese, 1887) and M. okuyamai Aoki, 1980, are identified. A checklist of all known species and a key to the Chinese species of this genus are provided.

The oribatid mite superfamily Mesoplophoroidea (Acari, Oribatida) is reviewed. Seven species in four genera of Mesoplophoroidea from China, including a new species, Mesoplophora (Mesoplophora) heterotricha sp. nov. from Hainan Province, are identified. Tritonymph of Apoplophora pantotrema (Berlese, 1913) is described based on material from China. A comprehensive, fully referenced checklist of all known species and keys to all known species worldwide are provided to facilitate the further study on this group.

The oribatid mite genus Indotritia Jacot, 1929 (Oribotritiidae) is reviewed. A new species of Indotritia (Indotritia) collected from litter in Tumen, China, Indotritia (Indotritia) tumenensis n. sp., is described and illustrated. Two species, Indotritia (Indotritia) javensis (Sellnick, 1923) and Indotritia (Indotritia) undulata Bayoumi & Mahunka, 1979, are redescribed according to Chinese specimens. Indotritia (I.) javensis shows a jumping ability according to personal observations. A comprehensive checklist and keys to known species of this genus of the world and for each biogeographic region are provided to facilitate determination and future taxonomic studies.
