Abstract

In South African settings characterised by traditional leadership, sustainable HIV/AIDS and SGBV prevention interventions require holistic, needs-based approaches informed by nuanced interpretations of cultural ideologies. The Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP) works with regional stakeholders in the Thulamela District of Limpopo to confront patriarchy and related challenges, of which culturally sanctioned SGBV is a main driver for HIV infection, is a primary concern. TVEP-supported implementation science research began in 2002. Using an iterative process, the Zero Tolerance Village Alliance (ZTVA) community-mobilisation intervention model was developed with focus on four thematic areas: HIV/AIDS, SGBV, child abuse, and access to justice.
