The study investigated the influence of school types and facilities on students' academic performance in Ondo State. It was designed to find out whether facilities and students' academic performance are related in private and public secondary schools respectively. Descriptive survey design was used. Proportionate random sampling technique was used to select 50 schools in Ondo state. Two set of research instruments named School Facility Descriptive and Students Academic Performance Questionnaire (SFDAPQ) for principals; and School Facility Descriptive Questionnaire (SFDQ) for the teachers were used for the study. T-test was used to analyze the data. All hypotheses were tested at a significant level of 0.05. The study revealed a significant difference in facilities available in public and private schools in Ondo State. It however revealed no significant difference in academic performance of students in the two types of secondary schools. Suggestions for the procurement of more facilities in public secondary schools were made in order to enhance students' academic performance.

Abstract

1. Introduction
Schools are established for the purpose of teaching and learning. It is also more important that the teachers and
learners are properly accommodated to facilitate the teaching and learning that go on there. This is the essence of the
school plant and facilities (Alimi 2004). Therefore school facilities are the space interpretation and physical
expression of the school curriculum. In Nigeria at large and in Ondo State in particular, secondary schools,
irrespective of ownership are expected to function in compliance with the achievement of the national education
objectives. To this end, students are expected to perform brilliantly in the final examination as this determines the
quality of output of secondary schools. This is one of the parameters used to measure the effectiveness of a school
system. The better the performance of the students, the more effective the system is assumed to be (Philias &
Wanjobi 2011).In another related study, Cynthia & Megan (2008) confirmed a strong and positive relationship
between quality of school facilities and student achievement in English and Mathematics. In Nigeria, it is the
general opinion of people that private schools are better in terms of the availability of human and physical facilities
and consequently students’ performance than public schools. This situation has made many parents to enroll their
children in private secondary schools. Experience has also shown that most students who secured admission into
tertiary institution such as Colleges of Education, Polytechnics and Universities are from private secondary schools.
The rate of poor academic performance of student in Nigeria had resulted to economic and social wastage and this
have become a great concern to all stakeholders in education. For instance, in 2008, 25.94% of the students had
credits pass in English language and Mathematics. Also in year 2009, it was another year of poor result across all

states of the federation. According to Okpala (2010) at the rational level, the percentage of candidates that had credit
in English language between years 2005-2009 in West African Examinations Council (WAEC) are as follows:
27.53% in year 2005, 15.56% in 2006, 22.54% in 2007, 13.78% in 2008 and 24.94% in 2009. He also stated that
candidates who obtained credit passes in five subjects and above including English language and Mathematics
between 2005 and 2009 are as follows: 8.53% in year 2005, 13.32% in 2006, 27.74% in 2007, 10.53% in 2008 and
1.80% in 2009.
The break-down of 2009 results in West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and National
Examination Council (NECO) indicated a mass failure across the 36 states of the federation. From the analysis in
2009, it was recorded that in Ondo State which is the focus of this study less than 2% of the candidates who sat for
the examination made five credits and above in NECO and WASSCE while 0.95% of the candidate made credit
passes in English Language and Mathematics.
In August 2010, WAEC gave the outcome of the May/June 2010 exercise as achieving a 75 percent failure in
English Language and Mathematics sitting alone! That report further showed that only 24.95 percent of the
candidates who sat for the examinations, made five credits, including English Language and Mathematics,
representing 337,071 of the 1,278,843 candidates whose results were released by the examination body. The WAEC
Nov. /Dec. 2010 WASSC examination result in English and Mathematics, two subjects widely believed to be the
pivot of the major fields of sciences and arts, was also nothing to write home about (Adeiza 2011). The failure was
not just intense; it was truly hopeless in the sense of the situation in the post-primary training environment. In this
case and as earlier declared on December 23, 2010 by the examinations body, only 20.04 per cent or 62,295
candidates obtained credit pass in English, Mathematics and other three subjects in the Nov. /Dec. 2010
examinations. This is a pointer to the fact that all is not well with the students’ attainment in the cognitive domain.
Apart from the general poor performance referred to above, there appeared to be difference in performance from one
school to the other. It may be argued that such variation in performance is unavoidable. Although, the incidence of
poor performance appears to be more common in public secondary schools, private schools are not free from the
declining trend.
The consequence of mass failure in public examination is the inability of learners to proceed to higher educational
institution. As a result of this poor performance, stakeholders in education are curious to know the causal factors
associated with the problem. Causes of the poor academic performance could include ownership of the school and
inadequate facilities. Facilities are of everything used directly or indirectly for the benefit of education. Facilities
could also be explained as the entire school plant such as blocks of classrooms, staffrooms, laboratories, workshops,
libraries, laboratory equipment, consumables, audio-visual aids, electricity, water, chairs, tables, stationeries,
playground, storage spaces and others which school has. It has always been realized that facilities are very important
in the development and improvement of education in Nigeria. A school without facilities, either private or public,
may not be able to achieve the stated goals and objectives of the system. When facilities are available and skillfully
utilized, they influence learning and making it more meaningful. Facilities in education are very vital because they
aid teaching and learning.
Bandele (2003) noted that the importance of physical facilities cannot be relegated. Facilities like modern
laboratories, libraries and classrooms are to be put in place in all our schools. Adesola (2005) found out that the level
of available resources is indeed a plus to the teachers and goes to show the level of ingenuity and commitment of the
teachers toward effective delivery of lesson. There is the need for renovation of old buildings, chairs, desks, cabinets
and acquisition of modern classrooms as earlier recommended by Alimi (2007). Akinfolarin (2008) identified
facilities as a major factor contributing to academic performance in the schools system. These include classroom
furniture, recreational equipment among others. Different studies conducted by Ayodele (2000) and Vandiver (2011),
showed that a positive relationship exists between availability of facilities and student academic performances.
Research findings on the influences of facilities in private and public secondary schools on students’ academic
performance are controversial. Keeves (1978) found out that the type of school, classified as public or private did
not make any difference on students’ academic performance. However, Ajayi (2006), found out that school type
make a difference in student academic performance. In addition, Philias & Wanjobi (2011) reiterated that the type of
schools, (single sex or mixed, private or public) has effect on the academic performance of students in Mathematics.
Therefore, this study wants to find out whether a relationship exists in types of school, facilities and academic
performance.
1.1 Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the study is to find out the influence of school types (based on ownership) on academic performance
of senior secondary school students in Ondo State. The study will also examine whether public and private schools

differ in term of facilities availability.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Parents and other stakeholders in education have condemned the high rate of poor academic performance of students
in external examinations: WAEC and NECO. This poor performance is not limited to public school alone, private
school were also involved. Reasons range from poor teaching personnel and non-availability of school facilities.
Therefore, the problem to which attention will be directed in this study is to what extent do school types (private and
public) and facilities influence academic performance of students in senior secondary schools in Ondo State. On the
basis of the background and statement of the problem two hypotheses were generated for the study.
1.3 Hypotheses
1) There is no significant difference in school facilities between public and private secondary schools in Ondo
State.
2) There is no significant difference in the academic performance of students between private and public
secondary schools in Ondo State.
2. Methodology
The survey type design of the descriptive research was used. The researcher collected information that describes the
facilities situation in private and public schools. The population consists of all senior secondary school teachers and
principal in public and private secondary schools in Ondo State.
Fifty senior secondary schools were purposively sampled to include 36 public senior secondary schools and 14
private senior secondary schools. These schools participated in the study.
2.1 Instrument
Two instruments named School Facility Descriptive and Student Academic Performance Questionnaire (SFDSAPQ)
for principal only; and Schools Facility Descriptive Questionnaire (SFDQ) for teachers were used for the study. The
first instrument sought information on type of schools, background and physical facilities of the school and the
results of students in the Senior School Certificate Examination in each of English Language, Mathematics and
Biology. The second instrument sought information from teachers who taught the three core subjects earlier listed.
3. Results
Hypotheses 1 and 2 were tested by using T-test.
Hypothesis 1: There is no significant difference in facilities between public and private senior secondary schools in
Ondo State.
As shown in table1 the mean of facilities availability in private school (68.29) was higher than that of public schools
(52.42). The table shows further that the t-cal (5.764) is greater than the t-table (2.021) at P<.05 level of significance.
Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected. This shows that there was a significant difference in the facilities available
in public and private schools
Hypothesis 2: There is no significant difference in the academic performance of students between private and public
secondary school in Ondo State.
The result in table 2 shows that the mean performance of students in private schools (17.42) is slightly higher than
their counterparts in the public schools (17.20). However, the t-cal (0.042) is less than t-table (2.021) at P < 0.05
level. Therefore the null hypothesis is accepted. Meaning that, there was no significant difference in the academic
performance of students in public and private senior secondary schools in Ondo State
4. Discussion
The study revealed that there is a significant difference in the facilities available between public and private senior
secondary schools, with (t-cal 5.764 and t-table 2.021). Private schools appear to have a higher index of facilities
than public schools with 68.29 and 52.42 for the private and public schools respectively. If facilities have been
found to be related to academic performance, as reiterated by Ayodele (2000), Cynthia & Megan (2008), and Philias
& Wanjobi (2011), one expects a better performance in private schools than in public schools. In any case, private
school proprietors appear to inject more funds on facilities than public schools.
In hypothesis two, the study revealed that there is no significant difference in the academic performance of students
in public and private senior secondary schools in Ondo State. This study disagreed with the work of Philias &
Wanjobi (2011) who reiterated that the type of schools, (single sex or mixed, private or public) has effect on the
academic performance of students in Mathematics. This finding is however in tandem with Keeves (1978) who

subscribed that the type of school, classified as public or private did not make any difference in the determination of
students’ academic performance. As shown in this study, it appears that whether a pupil attended a private or a
public school does not matter. What have been found to be related to students’ performance are the facilities
available in the course of programme implementation. It could be that most of the private schools are now recruiting
professional teachers to offset lapses so as to compete with public schools. It could also be that most of the private
secondary schools use comparable salary structure with public schools. Some private schools have been found to be
paying even higher salaries than public schools. This could be an additional motivating factor for comparable
performance in the two types of schools.
However, this finding negates Olutola (1989) who used a checklist of facilities in Kwara State and government
policy on private schools to determine the relationship between educational facilities and school academic
performance. The study showed that private schools with high standard of prescribed educational facilities did
perform better in WASC examination than public schools.
The present findings possibly could help to dispel the rumor that private schools are just money-making schools
without good academic standards. Indeed in this study, the mean of student performance in private schools is a little
better than in public school (private 17.42, public 17.2). This difference is however not statistically significant. .
5. Conclusion and Recommendations
The findings of this study revealed significant difference in the facilities availability between private and public
secondary schools. Government should therefore inject more funds into the system for the procurement of teaching
and learning facilities. This responsibility lies on the educational planners and administrators in the Ministry of
Education. Also, corporate organizations and individuals should be encouraged by the government to donate
generously in cash and kind for the provision of educational facilities especially the needed one for the core subjects
in public schools.
Apart from school and public libraries, education resource centres should be established by government such as
teacher centres and audio visual centres. Teachers’ centres could serve as place where teachers could work together
in groups to generate ideas that would make them more competent in the profession. Also, teachers should be made
to use instructional facilities while teaching and where they are not available improvisation should be adopted.
It could be concluded that government did not inject facilities into public schools when compared with facilities
available in private schools. Therefore, government should give priority to public schools in the provision of
facilities.

SBAE facilities have been utilized for experiential learning opportunities (Franklin, 2008), is a key component of agricultural education's three-ring model (Baker et al., 2012). The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in opportunities and applications of SBAE facilities based on the perceptions of secondary agriculture instructors in California FFA's Superior Region. The target population for this study included high school and middle school agricultural education teachers in the Superior Region of California FFA, whose agriculture department includes a school farm. This research utilized a descriptive, quantitative survey design.Findings indicate differences of characteristics between schools. When students are on the school farm they spend most of their time conducting SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) projects. The acreage of school farms had a considerably large range 1-117 acres. Most school farms are connected to or less than 1 mile from the classroom. A majority of school farms are managed by the agricultural teacher. The most common available resources included general shops, greenhouses, and livestock housing. The most common facilities included pig barns, sheep barns, and equipment storage. The primary use of land on the school farm was dedicated to livestock enterprises. The perceptions of the agricultural teachers regarding the utilization of the school farm are moderate. Teachers had a neutral perception of the importance of barriers including distance, finances, time of year, and weather. The findings in this study reveal SBAE farm facilities are underutilized for the implementation of instruction and laboratory when considering the convenience of proximity to the classroom and available resources. Agricultural teachers perceive the school farm facilities as an extension of the classroom. However, teachers disagree the primary use of the facilities are for formal instruction or SAE. This may reflect the teachers' perception that learning does happen on the school farm but no through a singular component of the three-circle model. Although there are adequate facilities, the condition of the facilities and the time and personnel required to maintain and manage the facilities may affect instructional opportunities on the school farm. SBAE facilities are primarily utilized for SAE projects specific to market animals. Students who do not conduct an SAE on the farm may have limited opportunities to exercise the ability to form concrete experiences.Recommendations based on the study include in-service training for agricultural teachers and pre-service teachers. Administration, agricultural teachers, and the agriculture advisory board should collaborate in the development of program goals, delegation of work on school farms, budgets, and planning SBAE facilities. Time should be set aside to plan curriculum specifically designed for learning on the school farm. Future research should further investigate training completed by agricultural teachers. Future research should also why activities on the school farm are not being pre-planned. This study should be replicated across the state of California and other state in order to establish a baseline of information which could further research efforts.

This study examined the effects of 3D model of human digestive system (3-DMHDS) on senior secondary school students’ performance in Human digestive system in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The research adopted a post-test, control group, non-randomized, and non-equivalent quasi-experimental research design. Two intact classes from two secondary schools were randomly sampled based on institutional ownership. The instruments used were Lesson Note (LN), Biology Performance Test (BPT) for data gathering, and 3D-model of human digestive system (3-DMHDS) as the treatment instrument. The reliability coefficient of BPT was determined using the Pearson product-moment correlation and was found to be 0.84. Three research questions and three research hypotheses were formulated for the study. The mean score was used to answer the research questions while an independent sampled t-test at 0.05 level of significant was used to test the hypotheses. Findings show that 3-DMHDS significantly influence the understanding of the human digestive system among students irrespective of their gender and institutional ownership. It was recommended among others that Biology teachers and students should be motivated to use the 3D model for the teaching and learning of the human digestive system among other biology topics.

The awareness and application of the knowledge of Further Mathematics transcends the boundary of Physics as a discipline. The need to explore means of improving students’ achievement in physics remains valid in the parlance of research. The use of mathematical knowledge in resolving physics is established in the literature. Over the years, students offer general mathematics and physics at the same time, yet, perform unsatisfactorily in physics. The application of further mathematics in physics and vice versa is evident in the curriculum. This study explored predictively, the correlation in the achievement of students in physics and further-mathematics. Ex post facto research of the co-relation type was employed in the comparison of pro forma of respondents in West African Senior School Certificate examination (WASSCE). Purposive sampling technique was employed in the selection of 103 respondents for the study. PPMC and MANOVA was employed in the analysis of data. The study observed a significant prediction in the achievement of students offering further mathematics and physics. However, gender and school type were not significant influencer the correlation between these two subjects. This study recommended that equal opportunities exist for male and female students, as well as, in public and private schools in these subject areas.

The research method used is descriptive qualitative, through an ethnographic approach. The results of this study indicate that the analysis of the needs for educational facilities and infrastructure is carried out in the planning process and analysis related to the needs for facilities and infrastructure in learning, financing analysis is carried out to meet the needs for purchasing facilities and infrastructure using reasonable funds according to needs, Procurement of educational facilities and infrastructure in accordance with the needs of the ongoing learning process, maintenance of educational facilities is a shared responsibility by all school members, facilities and infrastructure that are not used during the learning process still require maintenance without damaging the quality of these facilities. The conclusion of this study is that the factors that support the inventory of educational facilities and infrastructure include cooperation and adequate facilities so that the obstacle is the inventory of educational facilities and infrastructure is the low number of goods and human resources.

The study aims to examine how gender affect students' academic achievement and career targets or choices in Nigerian colleges. The sample of this study consisted of 261 final year students in various universities across Nigeria. Data was collected using questionnaires featuring questions on academic accomplishments and other pertinent information. The results of the study indicated that male students had a slightly higher overall CGPA score compare to the female students; and as regards career aspirations, more female students were inclined to study art and management related courses while more males were found in engineering and technology-based courses. The research found that gender difference does not significantly affect students' academic success in Nigerian colleges. Instead, the research discovered that students' perceptions of gender had a substantial influence on their career aspirations. The study recommends that promoting freedom in choosing careers is likely to steer students toward other professions that are completely at odds with their gender preferences

This research examines the existing ICT schools' effectiveness and the feasibility of planting a well-established, curriculum-based, and practical-oriented ICT school in Funtua through SWOT analysis. Descriptive research of the survey-type design was used in the study. The population for this study involved all the proprietors/proprietresses, students, and teachers of the existing 10 ICT/Computer schools. A random sampling method was adopted in selecting the samples targeted. The targeted population samples were 35 students, 15 teachers, and ten proprietors from 6 existing ICT/Computer Schools and prospective students (or residents) in Funtua Metropolis, Katsina State, Nigeria. A self-designed research instrument was used to collect data for the study. Data collected were subjected to analysis. The research questions suggesting the respondents' opinions were evaluated via their mean and standard deviation. The responses/opinion mean less than 3.5 were rejected while others were accepted. The F-test method was used to test the null hypotheses. These findings reveal that the motives of people enrolling in ICT schools were to acquire knowledge and feel it is essential. The rating level of computer literacy was good, while the students' performance in the existing schools was average. The residents' level of Computer/ICT literacy was confirmed to be poor, and the performance of existing schools' students was confirmed to be significantly low. The existing schools were confirmed not to be considerably attracting people. Instead, they discourage people from patronizing them for knowledge's sake. It was confirmed that there is a significant chance that new schools would gain people's attraction in the metropolis. Moreover, it was confirmed that there are no significant threats that a new school stands to confront in its process of planting and operation, which implies proprietors do not have much to worry about as a threat in the community.

This study assessed the implementation of basic science and technology curriculum in upper basic schools. The study was carried out to ascertain the adequacy of available school facilities and science/technology teachers for effective implementation of the basic science and technology Curriculum. .Descriptive survey design was used for the study. The population of the study comprised 3,906 teachers in upper basic schools in Nasarawa State. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select 315 teachers as respondents. A modified four points rating scale questionnaire was used to gather data and the data was analyzed using descriptive statistics to answer research questions. The study found that there was in adequate school facilities and inadequate science/technology teachers in upper basic schools in Nasarawa State. Some of the recommendations were provision of adequate school facilities and recruitment of more science and technology teachers in upper basic schools for effective implementation of basic science and technology curriculum

There is a general conception that high school academic performance and the type of school a child attends would determine his/her academic success in the university. In this study, 135 freshmen engineering students were sampled at the Redeemer's University, Osun State, Nigeria. The study aimed to determine if the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the type of school attended impact on academic performance of students in the first year at the university. The results showed that there is a significant relationship between UTME scores and the results of engineering freshmen; that is, students who attended private secondary schools performed somewhat better than students who went to public secondary schools. Also, statistical analyses showed that the type of secondary school attended has a significant relationship with UTME scores in favor of students who attended private secondary schools. This study recommends that the government of Nigeria should make public secondary school more appealing to students who cannot afford private secondary schools by putting measures in place to train and employ qualified teachers, and improve teaching and learning conditions. The study aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all and lifelong learning.

Education is a key driver in reducing poverty and increasing shared prosperity. This study aimed to examine the impact of parental socioeconomic status and the school’s physical facilities availability on academic performance. A quantitative survey research approach was utilized taking the state junior high school students in Southern Papua Province, Indonesia, as the population and samples. Data on parental socioeconomic status and the school’s physical facilities availability were gathered using two quantitative survey questionnaires, while data on student academic performance was obtained by getting the surveyed students’ academic records. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis using the SPSS software version 21. The results revealed a significant positive impact of parental socioeconomic status and the school’s physical facilities availability on academic performance among the state junior high school students in Southern Papua Province, Indonesia, both partially and simultaneously. The result highlights the importance of addressing the disparities in access to quality education between students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. This study’s findings may endorse the efforts to eliminate class-based gaps in students’ academic performance in compulsory education. In addition, government policy on the socioeconomic status of parents and school grants should be implemented thoroughly to promote educational equity so that students from low economic backgrounds have equal access to quality education.

The study identified and highlighted the level of plant maintenance and maintenance practices in the urban and rural secondary schools in Akoko Zonal Education Area of Ondo State. Descriptive survey research design was adopted using 160 randomly sampled teachers drawn from 16 secondary schools in the area as subjects. The results revealed that school plants were not properly and adequately maintained. School Plant Maintenance Rating Scale (SPMRS) was used to collect data on the plant maintenance practices in schools. Means and chi-square were used for data analysis. Regular inspection of plant by the principals and other senior teachers, removal of cobweb fortifications and sanction for improper use of plants were practiced in all schools. The regularity were however higher in urban schools than in the rural schools. Wastages were observed. Repairs and replacements were not done in time. Rural and urban dichotomy was only significant in the frequency of removal of cobweb fortifications in corners and corridors. It was suggested that parents' involvement in the provision of materials for repairs and replacement should be encouraged.

The study focused on the appraisal of adequacy of physical plant for primary education in Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria. The research method was descriptive. Through stratified random sampling technique,physical plants in twenty-nine primary schools were assessed by 116 teachers using the questionnaire method. Chi-square was the method of data analysis. The result showed that while land space for development purposes were adequate, classrooms, sports and recreation equipment, toilet facilities and portable water were inadequate. However, rural and urban dichotomy was only significant in the tables and chairs for pupils.It was suggested that parents' involvement in the provision of school plant and facilities should be encouraged.

The major resources which were identified and researched into are utilisation of space and physical resources in Vocational and Technical Education in selected Collages of Education in South West Nigeria. Descriptive research of the survey type was used with 1,040 subjects. The subjects were selected using stratified, purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Questionnaire and inventory were the instruments used for this study. Recommendations were made based on the findings and conclusion of the study.

Purpose – A growing body of research connecting the quality of school facilities to student performance accompanies recent efforts to improve the state of the educational infrastructure in the USA. Less is known about the mechanisms of these relationships. This paper seeks to examine the proposition that part of the explanation may be the mediating influence of school climate. Design/methodology/approach – Teachers from 80 Virginia middle schools were surveyed employing measures including the School Climate Index, a seven‐item quality of school facilities scale, as well as three resource support items. Data on student SES and achievement were also gathered. Bivariate correlational analysis was used to explore the relationships between the quality of facilities, resource support, school climate, student SES, and student achievement. In addition, multiple regression was used to test school climate as a mediating variable between the quality of facilities and student achievement. Findings – Results confirmed a link between the quality of school facilities and student achievement in English and mathematics. As well, quality facilities were significantly positively related to three school climate variables. Finally, results confirmed the hypothesis that school climate plays a mediating role in the relationship between facility quality and student achievement. Originality/value – As we face fundamental issues of equity across schools and districts, leaders struggle to convince taxpayers of the need to invest in replacing and/or renovating inadequate facilities. Deeper understandings of the complicated interplay between the physical and social environments of school, and how these dynamics influence student outcomes, may help educators build a compelling case.
