Abstract

In this study the results of physical and chemical characterizasition studies of sillimanite are presented. Sillimanite was collected from the area Manavalakurichi. Sillimanite is brownish in color and has a specific gravity of 3.21 with bulk density 2.14 gm/cc. It is conchoidal in nature and has a surface area of 0.12 m /gram. Particle size of the sillimanite falls between 90-250 µ. In order to check the quality, microscopic 2 and X-ray diffraction analyses were done. The microscopic study revealed sillimanite properties under polarized light and crossed nicol prism. X-ray diffraction pattern showed all the characteristic peaks of Sillimanite. Carbothermic reduction using vaccuum induction furnace produced aluminum -silicon alloy. X-ray diffraction pattern of alloys confirmed the major peaks Si and Al. Micro morphological studies of sillimanite grains were studied by SEM. Chemical composition of sillimanite was found out by chemical analysis.

... Mullite is therefore an essential component used as a good high temperature insulator of electricity and has high mechanical strength, low thermal expansion, good resistance to shock of cooling and heating and to chemical corrosion and it does not spall. It is mixed with clay to make refractory products for electrical insulation and spark plugs, glass furnaces, inner lining of furnaces and high-temperature containers widely used in the manufacturing of metals, glass, ceramics and cement [Sundarajan et al., 2010]. Similar type of work has been carried out at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar based on minerals like bauxite and zircon (Swain et al., 2011 andRoutray et al., 2012). ...

Sillimanite (Al2O3.SiO2) is found usually as a constituent accompanying with ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, monazite and garnet in varying proportions in red sediments. Investigations are carried out to recover sillimanite from red sediment sources by physical beneficiation methods such as gravity, magnetic and conducting separation methods for effective utilization. Recovered sillimanite is used for making sillimanite bricks and are fired at different temperatures in an industrial tunnel kiln. Physical, chemical and thermo-mechanical properties are evaluated. Mineralogical properties are correlated with the thermo-mechanical properties. The developed bricks are compared with the standards for their suitability in industrial applications.
