Abstract

The authors reply to Douglas Barnett's letter (see record 2007-10299-001) commenting on their article entitled "Family characteristics and measures of behavior in foster and nonfoster children" (see record 2013-42942-004). The authors clarify Barnett's understanding of their discussion. The study attempted to identify the family factors upon which foster and nonfoster children differed and to consider these group differences when examining behavior scores. Behavior scores demonstrated stronger associations with previous family history than with foster care status. These results are clear if one compares the proportion of variance explained and the magnitude of the β values (no decision should be made on the basis of a p-value alone) of foster care status with those of family measures. Further, that legal history and foster care status remained important predictors of behavior (after controlling for the influence of the other) underscores the importance of examining family history when examining this age group of maltreated children in foster care.
