Sete táxons de rodofíceas marinhas bentônicas são referidos pela primeira vez para o litoral brasileiro: Acrochaetium corymbiferum (Thur. in Le Jolis) Batters, A. liagorae Børgesen, Aglaothamnion herveyi (M. Howe) Aponte, D.L. Ballant. & J.N. Norris, Crouanophycus latiaxis (L.A. Abbott) Athanas., Grallatoria reptans M. Howe e Gelidiella sanctarum Feldmann & Hamel. Gelidiopsis repens (Kütz.) Weber Bosse é pela primeira vez referido para o Oceano Atlântico. As coletas foram realizadas no medio e infralitoral. O material está depositado no Herbário Alexandre Leal Costa. Seven species of the economically important agarophyte genus Pterocladiella were previously reported from Brazil: P. australafricanensis, P. bartlettii, P. beachiae, P. caerulescens, P. capillacea, P. sanctarum and P. taylorii. Only P. australafricanensis, P. bartlettii, P. beachiae and P. capillacea were previously confirmed by molecular data. This study surveyed Pterocladiella species from Brazil using both morphological and molecular analyses. DNA bar coding and phylogenetic analyses were carried out with mitochondrial COI-5P and plastid rbcL markers. Both molecular and morphological data confirmed the presence of five species in Brazil: P. australafricanensis, P. bartlettii, P. beachiae, P. capillacea and a new record of P. media. Pterocladiella beachiae and P. bartlettii are common intertidal species along Brazilian coasts, and they were the only species found along the northeast coast. The diversity of Pterocladiella species on southeast coasts is higher, and all species were found there. The presence of P. beachiae and P. australafricanensis, which are cryptic species within the P. caerulescens species complex, suggests that the latter may not be present in Brazil. Previously reported P. caerulescens specimens problaby represent P. beachiae because it was widespread along the Brazilian coast and P. australafricanensis was rare. Pterocladiella capillacea was common but restricted to the southeast coast. Pterocladiella taylorii is a synonym of P. bartlettii based on morphological features and molecular data. Pterocladiella media is a new record for Brazil, and the first detailed morphological study of reproductive specimens in this species was made.

Oceanic islands are natural laboratories for investigating species diversity and richness patterns. Changes in abiotic parameters may induce shifts in marine biota. Seaweeds are recognized as bioindicators, though those from remote tropical islands have been rarely studied. This study updates the diversity, richness and distribution of macroalgae from Trindade, a Brazilian volcanic island located 1140 km off the coast. Biotic data, obtained in a global database and in situ and compiled in a new records list, were associated with abiotic parameters. Conservation and ecological issues were discussed in the context of the observed greater richness, expansion of the distributional range and low endemism. A total of 141 species were identified, including 60 new records and 20 taxa of filamentous cyanobacteria. The greater richness, including potential cryptogenic species, may primarily be associated with past incomplete samplings, current new techniques and combined taxonomical methods, including molecular analysis for cryptic species. However, on the macroscale, this study provides information for the re-evaluation of aspects of endemism, connections and biogeographical distribution shifts of seaweed as­semblages, considering environmental changes. In addition, this updated checklist establishes a baseline for further compara­tive studies, reinforcing the hypothesis that biogeographical isolation can be disrupted by meteorological and oceanographic shifts, altering dispersal patterns and resulting in higher ecosystems connectivity.

The Southwest Atlantic is notable for having extensive reef areas cemented by non‐geniculate coralline red algae. Based on an analysis of four genetic markers and morpho‐anatomical features, we clarify the species of Harveylithon in the tropical and warm temperate Southwest Atlantic. Species delimitation methods (mBGD, ABGD, SPN and PTP) using three markers (psbA, rbcL and COI), support the recognition of three new species: H. catarinense sp. nov., H. maris‐bahiensis sp. nov. and H. riosmenum sp. nov., previously incorrectly called Hydrolithon samoënse. Our findings highlight the importance of using an approach with several lines of evidence to solve the taxonomic status of the cryptic species. This article is protected by copyright. This study reports the first occurrence of Boodlea composita (Harv.) F.Brand (Chlorophyta) to the northeastern coast of Brazil and the second record for the Brazilian coast. The material was collected along the coast of Bahia (08°20′07″-18°20′07″S and 30°20′37″-46°36′59″W). The distribution of B. composita was expanded along the coast of Brazil, since this was known only to the Southeast, specifically to Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro. In American Atlantic, B. composita presents northern limit of distribution in Bermuda and southern limit at Rio de Janeiro.

The present paper included morphological and geographical distribution aspects of the Valoniaceae species occurring in the littoral of Bahia, Brazil. Specimens from vouchers of herbaria and material collected at 29 sites between 1994 and 2010 were analyzed. Four species were identified: Valonia aegagropila, V. macrophysa, V. ventricosa and Ernodesmis verticillata, the latter is a new record for the marine algae of Bahia state. Fertile thalli of E. verticillata and the presence of silica and calcium carbonate crystals into their cells were documented for the first time for the Brazilian coast. Detailed descriptions, illustrations and geographical distribution data for each species through the brazilian coast, as well as, discussion with related taxa are presented. Valonia aegagropila showed a wide distribution, being recorded all along the coast of Bahia, V. macrophysa and V. ventricosa, were recorded from the Todos los Santos Bay to the Abrolhos Archipelago and E. verticillata occurred only on the Itaparica and Madre de Deus Islands, both located in the Todos los Santos Bay.

We report here the results of a survey of the phytobenthos of Boipeba Island, Bahia state, Brazil. Samples were collected during three periods (July 2007 and March and December 2012) in the intertidal regions of offshore reefs near the beaches at Ponta dos Castelhanos, Bainema, Moreré, and Tassimirim. A total of 159 taxa were identified: Rhodophyta (83), Chlorophyta (52), Heterokontophyta/Phaeophyceae (21), Cyanobacteria (02), and Magnoliophyta (01). The most representative orders were Ceramiales (Rhodo-phyta), Bryopsid ales (Chlorophyta), and Dictyo tales (Heterokontophyta/Phaeophyceae) with 30, 23 and 15 taxa respectively; vouchers were deposited in the herbarium of the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (HUEFS). This work adds 150 new taxa to those already known for Boipeba Island, including Nitophyllum punctatum (Stackh. in With.) Grev., whose occurrence is now confirmed for the coast of Bahia. The number of species identified in this study was elevated in comparison with previous phytobenthos studies undertaken on Brazilian islands.

The Lomentariaceae, previously treated as subfamily Lomentarioideae in the family Champiaceae, is one of the six families currently classified in the Rhodymeniales. Relationships within the family are not well-established, and new genera have been segregated from Lomentaria, a notoriously polyphyletic taxon as currently circumscribed. The lack of access to molecular data of type specimens has limited the taxonomic clarifications within the Lomentariaceae. Using new collections from Brazil, historical collections and data available in GenBank, we generated rbcL and COI-5P phylogenies of the Lomentariaceae, and we used species delimitation methods to assess the species-level diversity among sequences. A nuclear LSU rDNA phylogeny, although less representative in number of taxa, confirmed our findings. Our results recovered Ceratodictyon and Semnocarpa as monophyletic, whereas Lomentaria was polyphyletic. Integrating phylogenetic analyses, analyses of genetic variance, and morphological analyses, we revealed a new species, Ceratodictyon sanctae-crucis sp. nov., collected on the coast of Bahia (northeastern Brazil). Having included a newly generated sequence of the holotype of Lomentaria sinensis, a heterotypic synonym of L. hakodatensis, and a sequence from a sample collected near the type locality of L. hakodatensis, we propose the new genus Yendoa gen. nov. to accommodate this species. Our results support a more phylogenetically coherent taxonomic scheme for the Lomentariaceae, which now includes only monophyletic genera.

A recent floristic survey of Rhodophyta from Ceará State, Brazil (02º46'30''-07º52'15''S and 37º14'54''-41º24'45''W), revealed the occurrence of 113 species distributed into 14 orders, 28 families and 63 genera. Of these, 18 species belonging to seven orders are new records; some of them poorly described and illustrated in the literature or cited only checklists. Therefore, aiming to expand the taxonomic knowledge about these poorly known species, we present detailed descriptions, illustrations, and comments on related taxa. The occurrence of Ceratodictyon scoparium is confirmed for the South Atlantic coast. The male gametophytes of Dohrniella antillarum var. brasiliensis and tetrasporophytes of Gracilariopsis silvana are illustrated for the first time. Ceramium fujianum is a new addition to northeastern Brazil. Among the new records, Callithamnion corymbosum, Ceramium clarionense, C. fujianum and C. scoparium showed a significant expansion of their geographic distribution along the Brazilian coast. Most of the newly recorded species are filamentous, small-sized or tufted algae, highlighting the need for new collections to detect the presence of these components.

Amorpho-taxonomic study was undertaken of the Cladophorales and Siphonocladales, from bimonthly collections in the intertidal zone of Bimbarras Island, State of Bahia, between September/2008 and July/2011. A total of 12 taxa were identified: Boodlea compósita (Harv.) F.Brand, Chaetomorpha aerea (Dillwyn) Kütz., Chaetomorpha brachygona Harv., Chaetomorpha ligustica (Kütz.) Kütz., Chaetomorpha vieillardii (Kütz.) M.J.Wynne, Cladophora brasiliana G.Martens, Cladophora laetevirens (Dillwyn) Kütz., Cladophora socialis Kütz., Cladophoropsis membranacea (Bang ex C.Agardh) Børgesen, Dictyosphaeria versluysii Weber Bosse, Rhizoclonium africanum Kütz., and Rhizoclonium riparium (Roth) Harv. The geographic distribution of Cladophora socialis is extended to the South Atlantic, and Chaetomorpha ligustica is an addition to the marine flora of Bahia. Descriptions, illustrations, and comparisons to related taxa are presented.

This study reports the occurrence of two red algae, Polvsiphonia decussata Hollenb. and Wrangelia penicillata (C.Agardh) C.Agardh, and a green alga, Derbesia tenuissima (Moris & De Not.) P.Crouan & H.Crouan for the northeastern coast of Brazil, the latter isolated from the cultivation in the laboratory. The materials were obtained from bimonthly collections in the intertidal zone of Bimbarras Island, Todos os Santos Bay, Bahia, between September 2008 and September 2012. Despite the records of these taxa for the Southeast and South of Brazil, they are rarely collected on the Brazilian coast. This study extends the northern limit of geographical distribution of these species on the coast of Brazil. Descriptions, illustrations, and comparisons to related taxa are presented.
